Story books with shadows in them

Hi, we are introducing the concept of shadows to our reception children next week.I am working in the unit but not directly teaching every day.I wanted to support the rest of my team by suggesting some good children's stories that had shadows in them.My mind has gone blank all I can think of is Preston pig and Colin McNaughton, you know the "Boo" and similar stories.I know there was one about a wolf I think but I can't picture it(excuse the pun:>) ) I just thought it might be nice to read some stories that got them talking/thinking about shadows as they will be making shadow puppets eventually. Can you help me out with any story/book recommendations? cheers x

Thank you, thats Julia Donaldson isn't it? I think I may already have that one :>) The book I was thinking of had a shadow on each page and I think you had to guess which animal/character/creature was making that shadow, the children really enjoyed it and read and re-read it in their choosing times IIRC.I just cant remember what it was called, it's frustrating.I really enjoy reading stories and where I am sadly, I haven't witnessed much of this so I want to sensitively inject my enthusiasm for reading/sharing stories by having some key books:>)

Any more, anyone?

Peter Pan

The Octonauts and the Sea of Shade

there's a lovely one set in a misty wood... you see different characters as shadows in the mist on tracing paper style pages then turn the page and see them properly... I'll see if I can find it.

Also the Dark Dark Night has animals scared of a pond monster which is really their shadows.

I have ordered The dark, dark night, that is on its way (hopefully) and I have now ordered The Foggy forest which looks brilliant.I haven't seen that one but know that the kids really enjoy Nick Sharrats books.I'm really excited about reading the latter book it looks really good(how sad am I Blushes :>))

gruffalo's child - the mouse makes a big bad shadow at the end Smile

mrz · 16/11/2013 15:08

If you can get a copy of the shine a light book some of the pages are acetate and when you shine a torch through them they cast shadows on the wall

lostinteaching47 · 16/11/2013 15:09

Darkness Slipped In, by Ella Barfoot - sounds like a thriller but is a sweet picture book about a little girl and her bunny making friends with darkness at bedtime.

greenhill · 16/11/2013 16:06

George and his giant shadow by Jeffery Severn. Amazon have hardback copies from £1.76. George is different to the other mice; when they raid the larder, he is left behind, but he saves the day.

AbbyR1973 · 16/11/2013 20:56

Not a book, but a poem. In fact one of my DS's most favourite poems:
My Shadow by Robert Louis Stephenson. They can both more or less quote the whole thing.
"I have a little shadow, that goes in and out with me, and what can be the use of him is more than I can see. He is very very like me...." etc
Love it! It was one of my favourites when I was little too.

NorthernShores · 16/11/2013 21:07

We really like the shafow by RLS - we have it in book format.

Galena · 16/11/2013 21:10

(There's a Peppa Pig episode about shadows too which is actually pretty good in its science - Explains why you have a shadow, why you can't run away from it, that big things have big shadows, etc, that it gets longer when the sun gets lower, that it goes completely at night and making shadow puppets)
