3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2014

I started the below thread last year and have had so many people find it useful I thought it might be worth doing it again.

I have had a number of messages asking if I have any spaces in my classes. I'm really sorry but I have been at full capacity for some time now.

However, I do appreciate that this is a very stressful time of year for parents who have children sitting these private school assessments in January 2013. So, I'm hoping that by setting up this support group thread I can help by answering some questions you have about these assessments.

Hopefully this thread will also contain some useful insight from the experiences of parents who have already been through the process.

I doubt they work on Saturdays but I don't think you should assume anything.

runmammarun · 17/01/2014 18:30

Even if they call on Monday. Do you think the yeses are over now?

MHDad · 17/01/2014 18:35

Didn't the letter from Habs say they will call selected girls back for Rd2 over the month of January? ie expect a drawn out process

runmammarun · 17/01/2014 18:44

Yes they did. Good point.

Destiny06 · 17/01/2014 19:34

Can anyone throw a light on what was asked by St helens and Channing in round 2 as my daughter is not revealing anything. Through your inputs i can atleast figure out how she could have performed??

MJizz · 17/01/2014 19:48

Destiny, for St Helens my dd was, as usual, tight lipped about the whole thing. She said it was games, something to do with colours and a rainbow. She had to guess something but she got it wrong as she said purple and it was yellow. Confused

We are waiting for Habs as well. Assessed on the 9th.

Mumteacher, have any more of your students heard back from Habs?

MHDad · 17/01/2014 20:21

Habs told us they will be calling those to be recalled for R2 tomorrow! They want to wrap up things next week! all the best

Destiny06 · 17/01/2014 20:39

Thank u Mjizz!!

runmammarun · 17/01/2014 20:43

Mhdad. Thank you so much. I will wait for tomorrow.

SomeSweetPerson1234 · 17/01/2014 21:19

missravada. thanks for the message about nlcs 2nd round. we attended today. my dd didn't say a single word about what she did. So not sure how she did.
Good luck to you and all the other parents.

mumteacher · 17/01/2014 21:35

Yes a number of my girls received invitations today for round2. They were notified by phone - so make sure your phone isn't on silent mode x

My concern with you mumteacher is that you are 'advising parents who are in direct 'competition' to 'your' girls (girls that you mention repeatedly on this forum are nearly always successful as your tutees

Firstly why would you do that

Secondly why is it that you never actually offer any real helpful tutoring advice (answer: because these families ARE
the competition.

I am truly concerned and therefore previously asked what your credentials were, appreciate your replying to that but still don't really understand what is going on here.

angelicfaces · 18/01/2014 04:12

Ja123 - I really wouldn't worry too much about mumteacher. You will notice that no one on this thread shares any real information. Before their DCs go for the assessment they ask everyone's advice. Soon as the assessment is done they (the good few) write in to say DC is unusually tight lipped - hard to believe given that these schools are known for selecting only the kids who are able to speak up the most.
Re mumteacher's credentials, much as you would like, you can't stop some people from getting taken in by faceless people on the Internet.
However, whatever mumteacher's credentials are and despite the lack of real advice, I'm grateful for this thread. Checking it and knowing there are others going through the same anxieties as me has been comforting.

claretay · 18/01/2014 07:13

For those who had r2 at Habs what is expected of the girls? I know parents interview with head but what are girls doing on the one the one?

MJizz · 18/01/2014 07:34

Angelicfaces, just saw your message. I have shared everything my daughter told me. I kept asking her for more info but all she say is "we did nothing" because she thought that was funny. I also shared the fact that St. Helens have changed the change in format of the second round. She was rejected by NLCS and we have not heard from Habs either so she clearly is not the bright confident spark they are looking for - so you see sadly it's not so hard to believe that she couldn't/wouldn't tell me more.

claretay · 18/01/2014 08:04

We also got rejected by nlcs and no news from Habs (assessed Thursday) so hoping today we get that call or game over by sound of things. Anyone done r2 Habs what do they ask girls, i know its one to one? Thanks

MJizz · 18/01/2014 08:08

To add, I said my daughter was tight lipped "as usual" not "unusually" as she has been like this after every assessment. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has found that, after half an hour of being quizzed by assessors, dc is just exhausted and doesn't want to answer my questions about what she did.

MJizz · 18/01/2014 08:47

Rejection letter from Habs this morning. Well done to those of you who got through. We have a back school but sad it did not work out. :(

AmIIndecisive · 18/01/2014 08:55

Sorry to hear that MJizz, it's never nice..

claretay · 18/01/2014 09:02

Sorry to hear mjizz.

Faithmum02 · 18/01/2014 09:35

So sorry to hear mjizz. Was it a letter or an email

ThisOneAndThatOne · 18/01/2014 09:57

Ja123 and angelic, I have found you posts very interesting and have been mulling over what the point of this thread is myself for sometime

I agree that no real information is given out and there seems to be a lot of PMing going on in the background.

So my theory is that mum teacher uses it for information gathering on what happens at the assessment to better inform her tutoring.

I know it sounds cynical and I may be wrong. But I just cant see what other purpose it provides. As mum teacher actually provides no real information

As I have stated on previous threads, I don't actually think that tutoring makes much difference at this age and it just adds to the stress of the whole process.

The academically selective schools are looking for a mix of enthusiasm, teachability and compliance. And at 3, 4 and 5 that cannot be tutored for.

4PlusMum · 18/01/2014 10:16

Whilst I find this thread useful for sharing information with other parents, I agree with others about mumteacher's agenda and take her comments with a pinch of salt. Her not so stealth boasts about the success of her students, which none of us can verify, will have those who have not been successful at 4+ lining up to book her to prepare for next year's 5+. If mumteacher's really wanted to be helpful she would make no mention of her students rather than praying on the insecurities of others to build a business.
