Teachers do not adhere to Statemented 1 to 1 support, do not believe in sub-levels, make APP assessments up....How much of what parents are told by schools about teaching is a box ticking exercise?

Following on from this thread:

and this:

I realised I was incredibly gullible when my DC first started school. What exactly should we believe concerning what the teachers tell us, how much is a PR job to cover up the ugly truth?

The 1;1TAs in my classroom come in early of their own volition to help with displays and photocopying because they don't have time once their charge comes into school, they also stay later after school too. But during the day they are 1:1 TAs and are used as such. However, if a statement says that the child needs group or paired activities I can't provide the 1;1 TA AND a second TA as I simply don't have one.

insanityscratching · 27/09/2013 22:15

I have a very good relationship with dd's TA and her teacher, we work in partnership to support her and I find her school to be exceptionally good with SEN children. In her class is a class TA, her TA and another TA for a child who doesn't as yet have a statement (according to his mum) but whose behaviour is challenging.
IME dd's school isn't typical of most schools in our area, it's a ten class school with 40 plus TA's. Dd's school attracts children with statements because of the support they offer, they are outstanding for SEN support according to OFSTED but only good over all.
In comparison our outstanding catchment school and in fact all the outstanding schools within a three mile area have a tiny percentage (1.5% on average) of children with SEN, these schools actively discourage parents from applying for a place. One tried to stop me looking round when I mentioned dd had a statement.
For me I think the attitude of the HT is paramount, our Governing Body recruited the HT because of his commitment to meeting the needs of children with SEN in the school.

Sugar hiccups admitted to TAs being used for photocopying. There are many many posts on TES about teachers refusing to do displays because doing so lies outside their role as teachers. So who does do them?

youaremy - i worry that this is full of bad information and emotionally driven claims to truth that will actually be really damaging for both parents of children with sen and for teachers and for the relations between them.

i just want to say clearly that i have not met teachers like the charicatures being described here and i have not met parents this aggressive in real life. anyone reading going christ i'm not sending my child to school now or thinking christ sack of the pgce idea i don't want to deal with this level of abuse on a daily basis - this is not the norm honest.

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/09/2013 22:16

So.

No teacher here, on this thread, has ever used a statemented child's 1:1 to take a group (allocated child in it or not)?

No teacher here, has ever asked a child's allocated 1:1 to watch/mind/help/ any child than the child they are allocated for?

Well good. No-one is breaking the law. What has this whole thread been about then? Confused

swallowedAfly · 27/09/2013 22:20

your hysteria mostly tbf star.

i've never seen anyone other than a teacher put up displays.

personally i used to have to clean my room and cupboards and windows because the cleaners got about two minutes per room.

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 27/09/2013 22:20

yes swallowed

starlight, I dont think you understand Statements.

Regards · 27/09/2013 22:21

Equally the TES thread fictional and the other MN thread, the SN boards....Don't think so somehow.

Law? Some of the teachers on this thread did not even seem to know there was a funding reform, or how Statements should be quantified.

OP posts:
Regards · 27/09/2013 22:23

Granted I don't know the whole of a teachers Terms and Conditions. How much research are you requiring of me? I am a parent whose child receives a service.

spanieleyes · 27/09/2013 22:23

I hovered and cleaned the toilet floors yesterday as the cleaner was off ill. I don't think that's in my job description either, but it needed doing!

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/09/2013 22:24

Do the teachers on this thread actually know what the criteria is for awarding a child a statement?

DO the teachers on this thread actually know how to write a SMART target? (I ask because in 6 schools (yep including current) I have never seen a SMART target written by a teacher despite the SEN COP saying IEP targets must be SMART).

Regards · 27/09/2013 22:24

star Are you laughing hysterically yet? If I didn't laugh I'd cry.

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/09/2013 22:26

I've case-managed my own child's legal battle for provision plus plenty of others through tribunals. How many have you done?

I know the law and I know all about statements.

I'm pretty confused about EHCPs but to be fair, so are the people creating them.

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/09/2013 22:28

No. I'm not laughing hysterically.

I'm ploughing through my inbox of PMs from abused TAs.

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 27/09/2013 22:31

DP currently is responsible for about 500 children, 15 of which have Statements, 50 have social workers, so more than him?

The special school my dd is meant to attend don't know how to write IEP's, run annual reviews or even deliver provision in a statement! Pretty disturbing considering there are 90 kids there all with a statement!!

Even so and even though they've drove my dd to self harm there are a couple of teachers in there who are outstanding and have really engaged my daughter. It's just a shame no one will whistleblow on the rest of them!

KOKOagainandagain · 27/09/2013 22:43

"I think this thread is full of bad information by posters who don't understand how the law works."

Too true. It is shocking that they are teachers.

I was told yesterday that Essex LA did not fund 1:1 - even with a statement there are no children in Essex primary schools with 1:1 by Essex LA children's services sen dept. This is embarrassing. I KNOW this is not true unless I have hallucinated the 1:1 in DS2s Essex primary school and all the parents I know locally with statements that specify and quantify 1:1 are lying.

Do I ask staff why they are lying when they are swearing that black is white? I really don't know how to deal with this. I am trying to work in partnership but find this utterly disrespectful and it blocks meaningful communication.

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/09/2013 22:44

Yes. I've steered more than 15 families through the statementing process.

swallowedAfly · 27/09/2013 22:56

the how to get a statement process. yes it does tend to be a skill.

stripeyslippers · 27/09/2013 22:58

are you meaning to imply anything by that, swallowedafly? because as a statement it is dangerously close to saying that if you know how to play the system then you can get a Statement.

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/09/2013 22:59

It is, and it is a skill the schools should have and be doing.

To be fair to them, many have been given false information by their LAs about the criteria and evidence required, not to mention the paperwork demands.

StarlightMcKenzie · 27/09/2013 23:01

I also support families through the dx process too.

You're deluding yourself if you think I can actually GIVE a dx or a statement though.

Have you ever tried to get either? And have you tried to get them with a developmental disability of your own?
