In terms of quality and value. Need to buy DDs soon and don't want to buy cheap if it's gonna look a bag o' shite within a few weeks....any recommendations for top uniform pls.

Ours has come from a combination of M&S, BHS and Woolies. All pretty good, I think.

Blandmum · 20/06/2006 21:31

don't spend too much because
a. they grow so quickly
b. they get all sorts of food, paint, grass stains etc over themselves
c, they fall and trip a put holes in things fasted than you can say 'Tesco's' Smile

I tend to buy cheaper stuff and when it looks awful I have no worries about binning it. I got 6 sirts for ds for a £5.....after a few terms they don't owe me anything

fairydust · 20/06/2006 21:31

M&S dd's will have lasted the full school year and still looks decent.

JackieNo · 20/06/2006 21:32

Oh yes - some bits from Tesco's too (mostly tights)Smile

Cappucino · 20/06/2006 21:32

it's all going to look like a bag of shite Smile

that's why you buy it

m & s are okay though but to be honest if you buy cheap you can just afford to replace it

it's going to be the dirt that gets ya in the end

cece · 20/06/2006 21:32

Tescos good price ans still looking good. Also got cardi in BHS and was pleased with it.

Whizzz · 20/06/2006 21:32

Adams trousers went scruffy looking quickly

Blandmum · 20/06/2006 21:35

to a degree I suppose that it depends on your child. If your child is neat and tidy, I'd go for more upmarket stuff.

My two are such scruffy little dears they always look a mess and the stuff gets trashed, regardless of where we buy it! Grin

BettySpaghetti · 20/06/2006 21:37

I would recommend M&S summer dresses -only £6 , cheaper than a lot of other places and they are much nicer, not horrible polyester.

Bink · 20/06/2006 21:45

Woolies girls cotton cardies are gorgeous - lovely deep colours, subtle pretty edging, and for the little ones - up to about age 6 - the buttons are heart-shaped, which is just a lovely touch. And dd's seem to have no signs of wear - even one she's just about grown out of after two years.

roisin · 20/06/2006 21:55

I don't like Asda stuff - trousers seem to wear very badly. Tescos uniform seems to last much better for a similar price.

Other than that we're with MB: my two are little urchins and none of their clothes last long, so we go for cheap every time.

granarybeck · 21/06/2006 10:41

ds' sainsbury's trousers have lasted well

MaybeBaba · 03/07/2006 21:04

I had bought cheap Asda cardigan and it looked awful after a few months - it was £4. I got another one from M&S before christmas and it still looks fab now. Just picked up their brochure and it is good value and 3 for 2.

Have had stuff from Matalan which was ok and Tesco as well - it all seems well priced and I got 5 tops and 5 dresses / summer dresses so it all wore wekk and saved on the washing in the week! I reckon I kitted her out last year (nursery) for £70 for the whole year - good value I thought!

Feistybird · 03/07/2006 21:10

I bought a mix last year for DD:-
M&S skirt and dress - still looks fab (will use both for DD2 next yr)
Sainsbury's skirt - looked bobbly after a few washes - will give it to charity
Sainbury's dress - has worn ok would consider using it again.
M&S trousers - don't look particularly good - but they did get a hammering

hjervis · 02/08/2006 14:21

Don't buy M&S school shoes - they are a false economy!!! Brought pair this week and within 1 hour of wearing them they are basically ruined. Once scuffed (which always happens) the black "leather" material starts to peel away. M&S refused to take them back but have now been adviced to try again as they are not "fit for purpose". Don't fancy my chances so now off to do what I should have done in the first place and head off to Clarks! Great remark from M&S customer services " they were only £11, so what do you expect?". I expect a lot more from M&S. Sorry about the rant - but slight annoyed about the whole thing

sandyballs · 02/08/2006 14:53

That's surprising to hear. I brought my DDs M&S school shoes last July and they lasted until May this year when they outgrew them, but they still looked like new and I hadn't even cleaned them . One of my DDs is an avid football player at break time too.

hjervis · 02/08/2006 15:25

One of my friends said hers lasted ages as well thats why I went and brought them. Maybe its this particular style that I brought thats not up to it. They look really nice shoes as well and fit well. Oh well!!

Bozza · 02/08/2006 15:30

I have not been impressed with Asda trousers or sweatshirt. Trousers rubbed up really quickly and then split. Sweatshirt went out of shape despite being hardly worn (was spare for when logoed ones all dirty). I actually thought the Adams trousers were OK. But basically agree with mb.

Maddison · 02/08/2006 15:39

I'm not impressed with Adams trousers - out of 4 pairs the hems have come down on 3 of the legs and on 1 pair, after having them about 6 weeks the zip came off!! Think I'll try M&S this time

bundle · 02/08/2006 15:54

M&S always sells quickest at our secondhand uniform sales at school..ie they last longest/look best. but tesco and woolies are both Ok.

Clary · 02/08/2006 16:10

I have always bought M&S after a friend warned me her boy went through the knees of Asda trousers.
DS1 not actually that heavy on his trews tho.
Polo shirts now.... they just get filthy! so I guess cheapest is best.
For DD, I like the fitted polos with scalloped collar, again M&S.
Struggled to find a skirt to fit tho as she is a skinny malinki and once they didn't fall off her bum they were such a small size they were far too short! Got one M&S and one BhS in the end and the Marks one wore much better.
But pinafore (looked much better on her) is tricky to put on and off for PE.
Someone once mentioned a stretch pinny which sounds good but can't recall where it was from??? Maybe Tesco???
Do take her with you as you may find what you think will fit, will not.
Can I recommend tho Asda girls summer frocks. £3.50-£4, the cotton style one had more cotton in than M&S, and the zip-up polo shirt style one was much less fussy than any others.

notagrannyyet · 02/08/2006 17:14

Tescos & Woolies are fine for younger ones.
M&S are good too but I prefer BHS trousers for the older boys. They wear well and have a zip pocket in the back for their bus pass.If these get lost I have to pay £5 each time to replace them.I buy the cheapest white shirts and replace them when out grown/grubby looking. The logo stuff I have to buy from the uniform shop.

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 02/08/2006 18:29

The only ones to survive DS's have been Adams, believe it or not. the rest- waste of money. But I notice someone else found the opposite,a nd so I think the trick s to get the best fit for your kids- so no droopy waists, ground hugging trousers that exaccerbate wear and tear. Combine good fit with a middle of the road brand (uniform the one thing that doesn't come from asda) and you're a winner

roisin · 02/08/2006 18:57

Does anyone know anything about sizing this year? For 7-8 yo boys trousers?
DS2 (7) is skinny, but above average height for his age.
For the last two years we've trawled the shops and the only trousers that have fit are Asda, but they have worn very badly: M&S, Tescos, Woolworths all far too big on the waist (in the past).
This year he tried on M&S age 7 adjustable waist trousers with the waist adjusted as narrow as possible. They were still far too baggy on the waist, and barely long enough. Age 8 trousers were a joke.

So has anyone found skinny waisted trousers this year? To save me doing a shopping-crawl with kids in tow

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 02/08/2006 20:25

DS1 is short and skinny, Woolies useless, Nexta nd Adams OK.

Heivght as important as weight / build though
