Any recommendations? Woven (itchy?) Printed (do they fade?) iron on (do they peel off?)

Iron on ones peel off.
Woven ones aren't too itchy for my kids as long as I'm careful where I sew them, but I hate sewing them. dd2 doesn't mind handed down clothes, as long as it's relabelled with her name.
Biro also works short term.

LIZS · 19/06/2006 20:06

Found the woven best - no complaints about itchiness. Iron-ons come off if you tumble dry or iron over them again. Printed you have to use the clear covers or the ink wears off (esp. in shoes). Many school clothes have a tag for you to write on with a laundry pen .

apronstrings · 19/06/2006 20:08

don't watse money on iron ons - woven ones or the biro i would say

Furball · 19/06/2006 20:09

Laundry marker - easy peasy!

Igo for the biro on the label approach, although remember when we were kids my Mum used to get Granny to sew all ours on school uniform at the beginning of the new school year, so may ahve to infoprm her it must now be her job!!!

LotosEater · 19/06/2006 20:14

I use all three - sew-in is best if you can be bothered - I only tend to do coats and jumpers these days, laundary marker on most sruff - on the handy spaces on the labels provided by the manufacturers

ds2 has iron on ones - I sometines sew them in for good measure on big stuff like coats

geogteach · 19/06/2006 20:36

Sew in - designate it as MIL job. Makes her feel important as DS1 starts school and now a year later he passes anything that needs doing to her, he doesn't think its something I am capable of and at the moment i'm happy to keep it that way!

HelloDolly · 19/06/2006 21:16

I just have our surname printed on ours as we have an unusual one then most stuff gets back to me.
Although so far I have lost 3 cardigans and a pair of shoes this year ?????

rktb · 01/07/2006 21:30

Being completely incompetent at sewing, could someone please tell me (yes i know this is excruciatingly dull) how you are supposed to sew on a name tape properly? Not sure how you will explain, but a detailed description, painstaking though it might be, would be much appreciated!!!

Nathanmum · 01/07/2006 21:33

Iron on ones have been worse than useless - sew them in... I fold in each end & just plain over & under does it!!!

frogs · 01/07/2006 21:45

Hi rktb, fancy bumping into you on one of my increasingly rare visits to MN!

I've just been doing dd1's secondary school uniform, so here is the drill: thread cotton into not too thick needle, knot end of thread. Fold over ends of labels, and start in one corner. I generally do bottom rh corner, as am right-handed. Stitch your way round label, with an extra stitch at each corner, as that's where they'll come loose if they're going to. Get back to starting point, do several stitches over the top of each other to secure the whole arrangement, cut thread, (not too short). Bingo.

Btw am increasingly coming round to idea of L school. Went to see nearby RC primary with Islington league-table topping results, beacon status blah blah, and even from my warp-speed 15 minute tour it was obvious that the place is a complete SATS factory. Will just have to abandon the idea of going skiing ever again. Sob.

Do look out for N/E London meetups -- dinosaur was going to organise one sometime soon, and would be good to meet you in person!

Indelible pens from the haberdashers.

JanH · 01/07/2006 22:09

If you must use name tapes rather than quick'n'easy indelible pen, then stitch them very firmly just at either end and hey presto! you have a hanging loop

JanH · 01/07/2006 22:12

But labels or writing their name in indelible pen won't work if the kids don't look at the sodding labels - DS2 managed to swap a brand-new M&S age 13 shirt for a clapped-out 9-10 Asda one with 2 buttons missing, and didn't even notice until he came to put it on again after I'd washed it and then complained about the missing buttons

roisin · 01/07/2006 22:17

I got Easy to Name tapes this year; the boys' uniforms are in rags - honestly - they're a complete disgrace, holes everywhere!
But the name tapes are still firmly attached

I got the iron on ones from the National School Wear centre,
despite what it says on the instructions it is best to use a thin tea towel in between, trim tags down, and if it starts to lift just iron again. Have just written name on with biro on a few washing labels, again when it fades a bit just write it on. To hang with sitting sewing loads of labels on, just for the kids to complain they are scratchy.

To help ID school fleece DD has a scoobie on her zip pull as I got fed up with her coming home with the wrong one, strangely enough 5yr olds don't read labels . And I sewed a big initial on the front of DS's first school jumper in black embroidery thread.

hoxtonchick · 01/07/2006 22:28

ha, have just ordered a batch of iron-on labels for ds's imminent start of school. looks like i'll be sewing them on. bugger.

hoxtonchick · 01/07/2006 22:28

ps did someone say north london meet up?!

frogs · 01/07/2006 22:36

Yes, dino was going to organise one, but might have got snowed under. Go on hc, you know you can do it... We could just sneak one in before everybody disappears on their hols. I would offer to make arrangements, but would exceed my organisational capacity atm.

Wed is good btw, hc, will email you before monday.

hoxtonchick · 01/07/2006 22:40

will look out for the e-mail frogs. and start a meet up thread....

eidsvold · 13/07/2006 11:34

i ordered the iron on labels from here and jsut machine stitched them to dd's clothes ( that I had made for kindy/nursery) or onto the washing instruction labels/ seams.
