My child's underachieving in year 4

At least on MN. Only 4bs all round. How can I support her to achieve at least 3 sub-levels of improvement over the next year? Must say I'm a bit disappointed. What kind of work should we do over summer? She NEEDS to pass 11 plus in September 2014.

OP posts:

Are you being sarky? (Not sure what level Yr 4 is supposed to get.)

PurpleGirly · 10/07/2013 23:38

Year 4 expected level is a 3B. So you are disappointed that you DD is above average by a full level and if she makes the expected progress she will be on 5As by Year 6 ...

simpson · 10/07/2013 23:53

You must get a tutor at once Grin

level3at6months · 10/07/2013 23:53

Really? Confused
Essential work over the summer has to be running around in the fresh air and having fun.
Now, my DS only has 4c's in y4. I'm desperately worried that he's doing quite well... Wink

Taffeta · 11/07/2013 07:00

If I were you as a minimum I'd be looking at intensive tutor weeks over the summer, a full time tutor from Sept and cancel all extra curricular acivities. What use are they in the 11+? I find when they are in the bath is a good time to test VR. If they are on the loo for an extended period, you can shout times tables through the door. And comprehension at breakfast is a must. I find we need an alarm clock set at 5am to fit it all in.

It's so skewed on here hey? I worry about lurkers that think it reflects reality. It's so sad to see posts that say "I thought my child was doing really well, but judging from MN...." And knowing that for every one that posts there are loads more thinking it.

martini84 · 11/07/2013 07:08

Is this for real.? I thought 4b was pretty good for year 4. My dd is only on 3b for literacy but so proud of her for 4c in numeracy.

Taffeta · 11/07/2013 07:09

It's sarcastic, martini. It's a comment about how skewed it seems on MN. Keep being proud.

Farewelltoarms · 11/07/2013 09:43

You're so right - my ds is similar levels and is top of the class. Must be a crap school tho because according to mn he should have been getting 4s at end of yr3. In fact, being middle class and only getting mid 4s in y4 suggests he may have some sort of undiagnosed sen...

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 11/07/2013 09:54

What did her report say? Is she distracted in class, do they feel she is capable of more but not making effort or deliberately dumbing down? I have no idea what the levels mean but if your unhappy then either - you need to accept this is your child's level. Be proud of her.

  • establish why she's not doing as well as her teachers expected.

-find out if she's struggling with anything in particular and speak to teachers about how best to overcome it.

I know what you mean about having to pass the 11 + I'm taking that as a sign that like me, your catchment secondary school is crap and your desperate for her to go to a better school.

What is it though you are unhappy about. Is this a fair grade do you think?

nothingnew · 11/07/2013 09:56

I believe some mumsneters are genuinely very supportive and share parenting experience. However some use the site to show off. If my dcs have level 4s all round in year 4 or even year 5 I would just put my feet up and think about having parties all summer. By the way we live in a very intensive gs town.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 11/07/2013 09:59

Just because a child is doing well doesn't mean she's doing what she should. Until op reports back let's not assume that she's an evil person disappointed in good grades. There's every chance her dd is capable of alot more and isn't applying herself or the teaching standards have slipped.

TreesAndFlowers · 11/07/2013 10:45

OMG! My DS is in Y4 and only managed 3a in writing! Is it best to give up now do you think? Also, why on earth has this happened, do you think it could be because I didn't read Shakespeare to him during my pregnancy? (oh the guilt!)

TreesAndFlowers · 11/07/2013 10:46

P.S OP shouldn't you be aiming for 3 sub-levels of progress over the summer holidays? No point setting your expectations too low.

QuintessentialOldDear · 11/07/2013 10:49

UCL does various summer schools. Sign her up for Classical Greek or Latin.

wheresthebeach · 11/07/2013 11:03

School clearly failing her...move at once!
(Sincerely hoping this is a wind up....)

xylem8 · 11/07/2013 11:09

Here we go again!
so typical of MN 'Please help me I don't undertand these levels, My Y1 is on level 5 for maths, what does this mean?'

Taffeta · 11/07/2013 11:17

Xylem, read the thread it's a pisstake

xylem8 · 11/07/2013 11:22

Thanks!
proves my point!!

MrsMelons · 11/07/2013 12:43

I think this is out of order actually, people use MN for support about their DCs whether they are top of the class or bottom and OPs taking the piss like this makes the forum look bad!

Taffeta · 11/07/2013 12:54

I don't think taking the piss makes the forum look bad. I think the constant posting of high achievers levels makes lots of people depressed and worried.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 11/07/2013 13:02

How do you all know its a piss take? Genuinely wondering because I always try and assume the best of people.

Ok so I gather from the other posts that the level is very good for yr 4. BUT surely there is a chance that the ops dd is usually a very high achiever and this is actually not what was expected of her?

If it is a piss take then no it's not funny but of its genuine then the op could honestly be worried about what's happening to her dd and y.

nothingnew · 11/07/2013 13:06

Second thought ...... my apologies to the OP if your concern is genuine. Honestly if your dc got level 4 all-round than he is doing very well. If you truly want valuable advice I think you should approach his school as his teacher/s should know best. There seems to be over populated level 6 /7 primary school children in MN though.

Taffeta · 11/07/2013 13:06

OP is a teacher I think Grin

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 11/07/2013 13:08

So I've been had then?

MrsMelons · 11/07/2013 13:16

I genuinely think there is a balance of posting about under/over achievers from what I have seen. Obviously the Gifted and Talented section is different as that is what it is there for of course Grin
