My child's underachieving in year 4

At least on MN. Only 4bs all round. How can I support her to achieve at least 3 sub-levels of improvement over the next year? Must say I'm a bit disappointed. What kind of work should we do over summer? She NEEDS to pass 11 plus in September 2014.

Definitely a joke thread. Got to be. If not, it's just depressing..

I never go onto the G&T session as it really doesn?t concern me. The most I read are Education and Primary Education and start to read the Secondary Education. But I come across every so often posts re level 6 /7 etc. It does make me wonder whether the MN really represent all sections of different communities.

What a shame there aren't more posts about average children though eh? Given they make up the vast majority.

nothingnew · 11/07/2013 13:31

May be average children just don?t exist in this country.

I rarely post but this thread has me so angry and sad.

Im glad that this is hysterical for so many of you but as a mother of a y4 who has come out with level 2s I came here for support and how to help my son not for a level.

Many of you should be ashamed of yourselves and think of the reality of having a child with additional needs life can be hard and this sort of thing does not help

TheSerene · 11/07/2013 13:36

Does anyone actually have help on how to support our ds who is late born in the year low attention span and restless and not really suited to the way school is set up, I feel he is set up to fail by the system.

I have 3 wonderfully average DC and 2 high achievers. I'm allowed to be proud of my average DC and talk about them both on here and in rl. On the other hand I'm not allowed to mention my high achievers without being made to feel that I am showing off or boasting.
I am equally proud of all my DC and what they have achieved in their lives so far.

mylife - of course you are allowed to be proud of all of them! I think 'boasting' is very different to being proud.

It is true that in typed, as opposed to spoken, word meanings can be misread. So might mean extra care in wording.

But I have no problem with someone saying they are proud of their child, whatever their achievement/attainment. We are all equally proud of effort, talent, humour, grace, tenacity, etc etc.

Boasting is something else - it's about wanting to be better than, or be perceived to be better than, someone or something else. Which is like being proud at someone else's cost.

Sadly, the systems we have make it very hard to celebrate individuals for who they are and what they are learning. It makes it much easier to judge according to figures.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 11/07/2013 14:04

serene why don't you search the home education topic? There's loads of people like you who chose it because their child wasn't suited to school. It's relaxed and done to your own child's pace. :)

Didn't mean to offend anyone. Well sussed Taffeta. Do you know me?

However, I do need dc4 to pass her. 11plus in 2014.

I don't think she needs to be doing any work in this summer holiday. If you want her to do well in a test in September 2014 then next summer holiday is a different matter! Two papers a week over the holidays between Y5 & Y6 should do it, but be aware that a lot of children will be doing more.

Taffeta · 11/07/2013 21:44

goingmad, nah just seen some of your posts.

mrsshackleton · 12/07/2013 12:55

My dc's school so underplays levels, that I genuinely have no idea where he is in relation to anyone - same with older dc (now left) even after she'd done his SATS, they didn't tell us directly, just slipped it into the report but in such a way you could easily miss it.

Hence, I've never had any level angst but I seem to be the only mnetter in existence in this bubble of innocence.

Taffeta · 12/07/2013 12:57

No 11+ in your area then mrsshackleton?

mrsshackleton · 12/07/2013 13:55

No, thank the Lord!
