Straw poll - does/did your Yr1 child get given their national curriculum levels??

Or rather do the parents?

We have been given DTS1's levels each term this year.

DTS2's school apparently doesn't give them out. (Different schools, long story)

I have been told that if we ask the school for the nc levels, they have to give them to us. Is this correct?? There isn't much time between the reports being given and the end of term (perhaps deliberately) and there won't be much time to ask his teacher for them.

We have an open evening tomorrow, and I was thinking of asking her for his levels so that we don't spring it on her right at the end of term. They presumably have them even if they don't give them out.

Ours get nc levels in each year's report and a comparison to the previous year. I'd ask.

itsnothingoriginal · 08/07/2013 20:30

Yes - we've been given NC levels this year for the first time. Up till now they've been a bit cagey about giving them out.

FionaJT · 08/07/2013 20:31

Ours doesn't. I didn't really know anything about levels until dd's Yr 2 sats results came home last summer. Reports just say below/meeting/exceeding expected levels.

katrina81 · 08/07/2013 20:31

At every parents evening we were given them, and they will be in the report next week as well.

This is across all the years

Periwinkle007 · 08/07/2013 20:33

I don't see why you shouldn't ask at parents evening. You can say something like 'our other son's report contains his NC levels, will this report also do that?' if they say no then you can ask what they are, if they say yes then hopefully they will be. if they say yes but then they don't give them then you can hand in a letter straight away when you receive the report asking for them.

Bunnyjo · 08/07/2013 20:35

NC levels were not in the report, but it was parents evening today; the teacher (without me asking - to be honest I wouldn't have asked) explained what her levels were on entering Yr 1, at Easter and now.

TheWoollybacksWife · 08/07/2013 20:36

DS brought his report home on Friday. It had his phonics screening result and written comments but no NC levels. There is an open evening this week and I will ask then. I know they have them - they just don't put them on the report.

nowwearefour · 08/07/2013 20:38

Not here and it annoys me

OohMrDarcy · 08/07/2013 20:41

not here, we just got below - meeting - exceeding national expected levels or something along with the phonics test result.

Bit baffling as we got the EYFS reception levels.... Confused

ShowOfHands · 08/07/2013 20:45

I don't think ours do. They just give out a below average/average/above average/mensa type statement for each child but we haven't had a report yet.

Gumps · 08/07/2013 20:49

No and it's driving me mad. I don't understand why not. They have to level them so why do we not get told.

VelmaDaceDinkley · 08/07/2013 20:50

I don't know, we've not had the reports yet.

Meglet · 08/07/2013 20:53

Yes. I find them useful as I can see what DS needs to work on.

Never heard any parents comparing levels, or any other silly competitive stuff.

Loueytb3 · 08/07/2013 20:56

We don't have parents evening this term. Its an open evening to meet the teacher for the next year and see their work. Its unlikely that we will get to speak to the teacher out of earshot of someone else.

Interesting that there is such a variation. Especially from year to year within the same school.

I can ask on the basis that his twin gets his. I'm sure most of the parents in DTS2's school don't even know what they are, so won't ask.

Yes, I had NC levels (well, equivalents, as school is independent), along with a sheet explaining average/below/above levels, and what levels are expected by end of KS1.

I didn't have phonics test results, though (not sure school did this, though, although I know lots of work has been done on words vs non-words, and phonics is a hot topic overall)

Catmint · 08/07/2013 20:58

No, had report today but the info isn't there.

Loueytb3 · 08/07/2013 20:59

Meglet - that's why I want to see them. I also want to check he's progressing at the appropriate rate. He's pretty bright but I have had reports (from a friend who helps out) that he's bored.

from Y1 we get nc levels in short report (levels plus effort and attitude) at the end of every term = 6x per year.

The nc levels paper shows where they were at the beginning of year, where they should get to and whether that is average etc

eg reading base line 2c; level now 2b; expectation for end of year 2a. = above average. Effort 1 attitude 2 attendance 99%

Not sure of this is a good thing. It is very academic focus (ofsted like it a lot)
There is no comparison between parents, everyone is very good at that. It does flag up if a child isn't making any progress.

MaybeBentley · 08/07/2013 21:02

I can't see how a year one curriculum level can tell you what you need to work on much. The levels don't really tell you much except a number and if they are seriously behind or ahead. If they are 1B at writing how do you know you can help them become a 1A? I'd much rather have a some information on what they need to learn next.

JewelFairies · 08/07/2013 21:06

No and I haven't even had a report yet despite dd1 breaking up on Friday.

TheBuskersDog · 08/07/2013 21:12

Is that your friend's professional opinion?Hmm
Usually when people help out they agree not to talk about the children outside of the classroom.

In my school parents are only given NC levels in years 2 and 6, but if they ask they will be told in other years.

Meglet · 08/07/2013 21:14

maybebentley DS's handwriting was lower than the others so I asked his teacher what he needed to work on so we just spend a few very short sessions a week at home trying to improve it. Mainly it allows me to spot where he's slipping up when he has written homework and to help him tweak it a little.

BaconAndAvocado · 08/07/2013 21:19

Not on report but I will ask for them at open evening.

caffeinated · 08/07/2013 21:19

Not here, but I asked and was told.

fuzzpig · 08/07/2013 21:22

On DD's report it said "working at expected level" in most subjects, "above expected level" in one. No actual numbers/letters. However in numeracy it didn't say anything about expected levels, and I think possibly she is behind in that as there are lots of things she doesn't really grasp. I am not bothered about levels generally as long as they are happy, though I wish they'd tell us if she's behind in numeracy Confused
