Straw poll - does/did your Yr1 child get given their national curriculum levels??

Or rather do the parents?

We have been given DTS1's levels each term this year.

DTS2's school apparently doesn't give them out. (Different schools, long story)

I have been told that if we ask the school for the nc levels, they have to give them to us. Is this correct?? There isn't much time between the reports being given and the end of term (perhaps deliberately) and there won't be much time to ask his teacher for them.

We have an open evening tomorrow, and I was thinking of asking her for his levels so that we don't spring it on her right at the end of term. They presumably have them even if they don't give them out.

No.

Ds is yr 2 and parents evening in March was the first time actual levels were ever mentioned. I am expecting to recieve them this year as he has done sats.

BuskersDog - yes I was surprised she was able to talk about it. It was in the context of me saying what his teacher had said about him at the previous parents evening (that he needs to focus as when he does he works very well) and she said that she thought he was bored as he could do it all so easily. Her DH also helps in class (different day) and had a similar thought.

It is the one thing I am concerned about as that is what happened to DH many years ago and it put him off school (and teachers) for life. She is a newly qualified teacher but not young and has a similar aged DC.

I'm not sure "working at expected level" as a comment helps anyone really. Especially not a parent who doesn't know what the "expected level is"

The variation from year to year isn't that surprising. There are several sets of data that have to be reported to parents:

  • the results of the EYFS profile
  • KS1 teacher assessment result in year 2
  • KS2 SATS results in year 6.
  • result of the Yr1 phonics screening check.

Anything else is up to the school. Some schools decide to report levels in every year group, others don't. What will happen when levels are abolished at the end of next year I don't know.

We get them in reports at parents' evenings in October and February, and in the end of year reports in July.

We are also given target levels for the end of the year in October.

We were given the results of the phonics check a week after it was completed.

It tells you your child is where they are expected to be at their age, why does having a number make it easier to understand? Surely everyone understands above, below or at expected level. - most people do not know what working at level 3,4 or 5 means.

But that doesn't tell you whether they are working to their potential. I would be disappointed if DTS2 is working at the expected level because he's bright and it would mean he has cruised this year. You can find out what the levels mean by a simple google and it's much more informative to know that they can write complex sentences and use punctuation correctly. Or that they can't yet.

I spoke to his teacher last night and as expected they don't give out the levels with reports. I have asked if we can have them. She looked a bit surprised and said she would need to ask the HT. I'm guessing that she hasn't had anyone else ask (but she is a NQ teacher). Will be interesting to see what the HT says?

As I understand it, we don't get given the levels but we get a point score. The expected point score for each year group was given on the newsletter. I believe we only get levels given in Year 6.

3MonthMaid · 10/07/2013 16:11

No, but I am considering asking for them. I know they "exist" as the TA told me.

I would like to know, mostly as want to know what areas to work on as planning on DD going private from y3 and it would be good to have her good across the board.

Not sure they will give them to us though!

RegularVoltaire · 10/07/2013 16:18

We got levels for the first time this year.

I'm not sure how helpful it proved to be though.

LegoWidow · 10/07/2013 16:26

I didn't get them in the report but I asked at parent/teacher meeting and the teacher went and looked them up for me there and then.
