Why don't we use 'magic e' any more?

And is it a problem if my child is taught in that way? I'm not very impressed (especially when I've already taught her 'split digraph') but want to know if it really matters.

and you have words like
have and give where the represents the sound /v/ and come and some where the represents /m/ etc

My year 1 has done magic e this year.

I can't see why it would make any difference to be honest. I told my 5 year old it was magic e, she is happy and uses it correctly and school will no doubt tell her in a year or so it is a split digraph. doesn't change knowing how to use it, just the name of it

I know magic e was much and more fun. Modifying e is just boring .

DD taught herself the magic e way before starting school thanks to alphablocks and has had no problems in switching to a/e, o/e etc...now she is in reception.

I guess the magic bit is unnecessary information for some kids who just want to know what the sound is.

It's just a lighthearted way of introducing a rule. In lots of cases neither it nor split digraph actually tell you what the sound is, you have to already be familiar with the word.

I've heard a split e used before, I think I prefer that.

We say split spellings

split frigging digraphs. I still teach it as magic e. Somehow the word magic is a lot more accessible and interesting to 5 year old than split frigging digraph

Why use either?

Personally I think it adds a bit of fun to an otherwise dull procedural rule.

Thanks all. My DD already knows that 've'is a phoneme for /v/ and 'me' for /m/, so I hope that the magic e idea from school doesn't confuse her.
