Why don't we use 'magic e' any more?

And is it a problem if my child is taught in that way? I'm not very impressed (especially when I've already taught her 'split digraph') but want to know if it really matters.

because it isn't magic

and you have words like
have and give where the represents the sound /v/ and come and some where the represents /m/ etc

IHeartKingThistle · 30/04/2013 19:34

My year 1 has done magic e this year.

(Out of context that sounds like a very worrying sentence!)

Periwinkle007 · 30/04/2013 19:37

I can't see why it would make any difference to be honest. I told my 5 year old it was magic e, she is happy and uses it correctly and school will no doubt tell her in a year or so it is a split digraph. doesn't change knowing how to use it, just the name of it

alienbanana · 30/04/2013 19:37

I like ninja E

spottyparrot · 30/04/2013 19:38

Our school still does magic e.

learnandsay · 30/04/2013 19:40

We do in our house.

spanky2 · 30/04/2013 19:42

I know magic e was much and more fun. Modifying e is just boring .

mrz · 30/04/2013 19:48

it isn't a modifying e either Hmm

simpson · 30/04/2013 19:53

DD taught herself the magic e way before starting school thanks to alphablocks and has had no problems in switching to a/e, o/e etc...now she is in reception.

I guess the magic bit is unnecessary information for some kids who just want to know what the sound is.

learnandsay · 30/04/2013 19:55

It's just a lighthearted way of introducing a rule. In lots of cases neither it nor split digraph actually tell you what the sound is, you have to already be familiar with the word.

KatyDid02 · 30/04/2013 19:58

I've heard a split e used before, I think I prefer that.

mrz · 30/04/2013 20:03

We say split spellings

bigbuttons · 30/04/2013 20:05

split frigging digraphs. I still teach it as magic e. Somehow the word magic is a lot more accessible and interesting to 5 year old than split frigging digraph

BerthaTheBogCleaner · 30/04/2013 20:08

Ninja e! Genius! I'm borrowing that one.

split boring digraph boring mutter boring ...

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 30/04/2013 20:11

I still remember the "magic magic E" sings from Look and Read Smile Ah, Wordy...

PickledMoomin · 30/04/2013 20:13

We use friend on the end.
Have you seen the magic e song? I miss it!

mrz · 30/04/2013 20:14

Why use either?

learnandsay · 30/04/2013 20:25

Personally I think it adds a bit of fun to an otherwise dull procedural rule.

mrz · 30/04/2013 20:30

Don't you find non existent procedural rules are dull due to the fact there aren't any?

learnandsay · 30/04/2013 20:37

Aren't you saying that the use of a magic e is a procedural rule which in fact does not exist?

mrz · 30/04/2013 20:41

There isn't a rule learnandsay and there isn't a magic e Shock

suebfg · 30/04/2013 20:43

DS's school use magic e

Pozzled · 30/04/2013 20:43

Thanks all. My DD already knows that 've'is a phoneme for /v/ and 'me' for /m/, so I hope that the magic e idea from school doesn't confuse her.
