Friends school told her it isn't possible in year one. I begged to differ but I'm not a teacher....

Can a year 1 get a level 3? Sorry, I'm not getting you.

But at least I'm keeping your thread on most active. Grin

It depends what they mean by "not possible". If they mean that they're not willing to do it then they're not willing. Another school might be perfectly willing to do such assessments for its own children.

ChoudeBruxelles · 15/02/2013 19:24

Does it matter?

thesecretmusicteacher · 15/02/2013 19:24

does NC stand for National Curriculum?

My son just got a "5+". He is in year 5. They told him they couldn't give him a six :)

does that help at all?

Flojobunny · 15/02/2013 19:28

Schools are reluctant to give infants higher assessments and higher scores because by year 6 if they are at level 2 then they have to have met level 4. Otherwise the schools stats go down.

Shattereddreams · 15/02/2013 19:28

Seems many schools do this then
If they are a particular level, why not give it?

it is very unlikely because to gain level 3 you would have had to been taught things that are not usually taught in year one. to teach the breadth and depth required to achieve level 3 would require a lot of extra individual work.

StarsAtNight · 15/02/2013 19:29

Not according to DDs teacher at parents evening. She says that DD is a 2b in reading and maths now and won't be assessed any higher than that in yr1 because that is as far as their assessment goes. I am entirely unconcerned by this but just to answer your question.

Flojobunny · 15/02/2013 19:30

Do u mean sit a year 3 paper or score a level 3 on a year 1 paper?

mrz · 15/02/2013 19:33

Children are whatever level they are regardless of year group.
Most Y1 children won't have the level of maturity required for level 3 but there are always exceptions.

They don't need to test ...it's teacher assessment

So the child can be level 3 but parent wouldn't be informed.

Same situation as starsatnight but child is 2a across board at this stage in yr1.
And 3 will not be awarded because according to the teacher it is not possible to do so.

Schools do not have to report levels in Y1 but they can tell parents if they wish. There is no reason not to award the level if that is the level the child works at consistently.

Floggingmolly · 15/02/2013 19:51

She will be at whatever stage she's at; regardless of what's actually recorded as her "official" level, you know. Stop worrying.

Could someone give me a doughnuts guide to the scores and what they mean please?

Shattereddreams · 15/02/2013 19:53

Not me btw.
I said to my friend I thought it was related to reporting progress but that I would ask MN.

Shattereddreams · 15/02/2013 19:55

A 3 in yr1 doesn't mean a 4 in year 2. So it doesn't make sense to me to not award it.

sittinginthesun · 15/02/2013 19:58

A child's level is simply what level they are at, surely? They don't have to hand them out/report until end of year 2, so what they are at this stage of year 1 is pretty irrelevant to anyone other than the child and teacher? Or am I completely misunderstanding the system (not a teacher, but am a governor who vaguely follows these things).

pooka · 15/02/2013 19:58

Ds got a 3b at the end of year 1. In reading and writing.

He is able though. Reading age of 11 at 5. Currently joins year 5 for some guided reading groups (and is in the most challenging groups).

Can't ride a bike or swim though. And has some SEN.

mrz · 15/02/2013 19:59

A level 3 in Y1 would not mean a level 5 by the time they start KS2 Hmm and are we talking about a 3C 3B or 3A? ...
progression isn't linear so as some would have us believe so the child could have a period of consolidation and make less progress in the next year we aren't in a position to make predictions.
