Friends school told her it isn't possible in year one. I begged to differ but I'm not a teacher....

I suspect it'll be pasted into the boasting book, sitting

The teacher did hand them out though. And followed by saying child is a 3 but it isn't possible to give that.
Absolutely far from boasting AND I repeat, not my child.

I think it is possible but unusual....

If the child is a level 3 in yr1 then you are probably talking level 4 in yr2 which is rare (but not on MN Wink).

sittinginthesun · 15/02/2013 20:09

Well, I think the teacher is wrong then - if the child is a 3, then she is a 3.

As a governor, I have a breakdown of the number of students at Ds' school assigned each target level (by year group) for the end of the academic year.

There is one student (not DS - so not boasting) whose target level for the end of yr1 is 3c for reading, writing and numeracy.

That being said, the computer system that I use at secondary school would not let me award a year 8 pupil with a level 2 (the level they were working at). It would not allow an entry of less than 3c for year 8.

I really don't understand why a teacher would say child is a level 3 but we can't give that ...it's asking for trouble Hmm
wouldn't it be more sense to say nothing or play down the level if they don't want to award a level 3.

Shattereddreams · 15/02/2013 20:32

That's the real world Mrz!

I have the answer for my friend. Not that she would do anything about it, she seems happy with school.

DD2 could certainly have read the level 3 reading test and answered the questions out loud, I'm not 100% certain her written English would have been good enough until the very end of Y1, part way into Y2.

No reason at all a Y1 who reads well at a school that pushes writing skills wouldn't get L3.

By Y3 DD2 could do her sisters Y6 reading SAT papers no bother.

She used to correct her sisters reading and DD1 (who is dyslexic, but brilliant at comprehension would help her with the very hardest last 3 questions)

I live and work in the real world Shattereddreams as do most teachers and they would be committing professional suicide to say such a stupid thing.

simpson · 15/02/2013 20:47

I have been told DD's NC levels and she is on target to get a level 3 in yr1 (she is in reception) so it can be done.

Although I agree with startail - it would have to be verbal (her reading assessment).

noisytoys · 15/02/2013 20:59

Reception DD is level 2A for literacy (just had parents evening) she is lime level reading which is about level 3c but falls short on other areas so isn't level 3. I wouldn't be surprised if she was level 3 in year 1

simpson · 15/02/2013 21:07

Noisy - DD is similar but a 2B but reading lime level books also but is not so strong in non fiction so reads books at a lower level in that. So that is what she needs to work on.

teacherwith2kids · 15/02/2013 21:08

DS achieved a level 3 for maths shortly before he left his first primary, so in the middle of Year 1.

Although his 'decoding' reading ability was also well above Level 3 at that point (they used an APP-style teacher assessment tracker so could pinpoint where he was in different aspects of reading), his ASD traits and relative immaturity meant that he had not achieved that level in 'inference'-type skills, especially when they related to the emotions and internal motivations of characters.

numbum · 15/02/2013 23:15

DD is y1. She's currently a level 3 in reading (not sure what sub level) and a 2a in writing. I dont understand teachers who say a child can't get a higher level than the one they're at
