just wondering if anyone had any good suggestions? I read a few pages to ds and then he carries on by himself. Have had my fill of Beast Quest so was wondering if there wasn't something non beast related we could try?

Most of the school suggested reading list seems quite geared towards girls. And he is refusing to try anything Blyton-esque.

I think my son quite liked horrible histories at this age, although I found them really difficult to read aloud! There was also a comic book character that I can't remember. Think it had 'diper' in the name. Mr Majeika was quite popular. Books by David Walliams - I liked Mr Stink.

CitrusyOne · 19/09/2012 10:48

The Mr Gum series is hilarious- my Y3 class loved them. And funnily enough, even the boys enjoyed Enid Blyton. Register on lovereading4kids and you can download samples. (sorry, just read that he won't try anything Enid Blyton- but honestly, my boys were as interested as the girls)

Ds similar age has loved David walliams, roald dahl, wimpy kid, first couple of Harry potters. But retreads captain underpants/super diaper baby the most. I bought do many Enid blytons in anticipation. They remain unread. And the Christmas list already contains Beast quest books that have been published this year.

8 year old DS likes Horrid Henry (easier books but he seems to relate to them ...), Jack Stalwart, various by Jeremy Strong. And non-fiction books.

He prefers "simpler" fiction books or things he can read in short doses. (which is very BQ like)

CitrusyOne · 19/09/2012 10:59

Have you tried some of the shorter Roald Dahl books like The Twits? (almost typed the tits- maybe NOT suitable!)

ChazsGoldAttitude · 19/09/2012 11:02

DS1 just turned 9 read most of the Wimpy Kid books last year. Also consider some non-fiction. DS1 likes this one for example
www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Soldiers-Handbook-Usborne/dp/0746099495/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348048915&sr=1-1

acebaby · 19/09/2012 11:26

DS1 quite likes the Dinosaur Cove books. less stomach churning than Beast Quest, but they are still beast related - to some extent!

iseenodust · 19/09/2012 11:31

For him to read to himself - Fleabag Monkeyface series (not one for this mum to read aloud!)
Also Dirty Bertie better than Horrid Henry
Football - Theo Walcott's TJ series

thank you all so much - will go on amazon now and buy a selection!

DS loved Mr Gum!

You could also try the Flat Stanley books, Magic Tree House adventures.

For something a bit more challenging Stig of the Dump by Clive King is a great book.

hugoagogo · 19/09/2012 12:08

Came on to suggest Jeremy Strong, but someone beat me to it.

Also go to the library-let him choose a big pile and pick the librarian's brains too for ideas.

Don't fritter all your cash at amazon.

EmpressOfTheGoldOceans · 19/09/2012 12:09

Yy to Jeremy Strong. Pure comedy heaven.

Also Cressida Cowell's Hiccup books - he might need help with them but we started reading them to DD at about 8 she loved them. Not seen the film but DD says it was very different.

TheSmallPrint · 19/09/2012 13:31

My 8yo DS has the entire collection of Beast Quest so I feel your pain! He has read all the David Walliams books which are excellent and some of the Jeremy String books (didn't like all of them). He has also read some Harry Potter.

We have just bought him a new book called The Terrible Thing That Happened to barnaby Brocket which is different and seems quite good (only just started it.)

I see hugoagogo suggests speaking to someone at the library but I also spoke with a male sales assistant in Waterstones who really seemed to know his stuff and recommended some good books to us.

Artemis Fowl?

dietcokeandwine · 19/09/2012 14:27

If you can bear it, the 'Captain Underpants' series of books by Dav Pilkey. DS is 8 and has read them over, and over, and FLIPPING WELL OVER AGAIN. I am beyond sick of them now, but he still loves them! DS basically likes anything with 'typical boy' humour in that makes him laugh.

Mr Majeika books have been a reasonable hit too, along with Astrosaurs Academy. And would agree about the shorter Roald Dahl ones.

WiseKneeHair · 19/09/2012 14:30

The Steve Cole books - Astrosaurs and Cows in action books were a hit with mine.

caffeinated · 19/09/2012 14:45

Book people have Charlie bone set at the mo. trying to decide whether to get them for Christmas.

hatsybatsy · 19/09/2012 15:08

Wolvern my Di Toft. Ds loved these.

BloooCowWonders · 19/09/2012 15:16

Plenty of Anthony Horowitz would suit. The Diamond Brothers ones are fab - loads of corny jokes that appeal to small boys and girls!

anice · 19/09/2012 15:33

My son (age 8) loved Beast Quest at the start of the year. Then as he began to really enjoy reading, these are the books, he's liked best (in chronological order):-
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Big Nate
David Walliams
Percy Jackson.

We are stuck on Percy Jackson at the moment. He loves them so much, he won't try anything else.

steppemum · 19/09/2012 16:11

My ds loves Mr Gum, very funny to read out loud too. He has also just read stig of the dump, quite a lot harder, but he liked it.

ds is now reading over my shoulder, he siad recommend Dirtie Bertie (he is now 9, and read loads of Horrid Henry last year)

steppemum · 19/09/2012 16:30

If you don't use a library do you buy all the books he reads?

Wow. ds read a book a day over th summer. he has read 27 famous fives and 20? secret sevens since about May and goodness knows how many others in between

madwomanintheattic · 19/09/2012 16:35

Anice, ds has been rereading PJ for three years. He's got three series of RR books which just get recycled over and over. We had a breakthrough last week when he read the hobbit though. He's rereading son of Neptune again now though...
