Book for 8 year old boy - NO MORE BEAST QUEST!!!!

just wondering if anyone had any good suggestions? I read a few pages to ds and then he carries on by himself. Have had my fill of Beast Quest so was wondering if there wasn't something non beast related we could try?

Most of the school suggested reading list seems quite geared towards girls. And he is refusing to try anything Blyton-esque.

Agree about David Walliams - fab. Quite a step up from BQ though in terms of text density.

Mr Majeika are great.

Agree with Mr Gum, Captain Underpants, and Roald Dahl. If your DS likes Star Wars there are a lot of children's novels which are spin-offs from the films, the Jedi Apprentice ones (with Obi-Wan as a boy) have been a big hit with my DS.

DS is currently working his way through the Chronicles of Narnia; we've just had a blip with The Silver Chair as he said it didn't grab him, but he's enjoyed the others so far. He's alternating with other books though as they take him quite a while.

I've asked his class teacher for a reading list to tie in with this year's topics and perhaps introduce us both to some new stuff, but haven't heard anything back yet. Maybe you could try that.

Yikes! Shock No library!

Well then you will just have to ask me then + I know there are other library bods on here too.

Erm, does he like football? because Tom Palmer has written about a million footbally books for that age range.

Terry Deary (the horrible histories bloke) also writes fiction, not sure how good they are though, my dd was a bit underwhelmed.

Is he a confident reader? Or does he still like you to read with him?

Michael Morpurgo is brilliant
www.amazon.co.uk/Born-To-Run-Michael-Morpurgo/dp/0007230591/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_6We loved this.
Loads of others are great also 'Running Wild' is set in the Tsunami, 'Kaspar' is about a cat who ends up on the Titanic so loads of non-fictional talking points as well.
Great thread as I need ideas for Ds who is 9.

What about the school library and school librarian? Also worth looking in the fiction section for his age on the Book People website. I ordered some from them last year, DS tried different authors and choose some that grabbed him.

Real tragedy that you have no library, could you ask other Mums at school what their kids like and offer to swap BQ and borrow better ones, though offering BQ may not win you many friends!!

My DS loves the 'How to Train your dragon' books

Virgil · 19/09/2012 17:57

For those with DSs stuck on Percy Jackson try the Kane chronicles (same author). I've just read the first one to make sure it was suitable for DS1 and thought it was really good for this age group.

Virgil · 19/09/2012 18:01

Ds1 also loved the hobbit and Mrs Frisby and the rats of Nimh (although he took some persuading to read it). Another vote also for Michael morpurgo. DS1 loved the butterfly lion, cool and adolphus tips.

Measle and the Wrathmonk by Ian Ogilvy is a greeeaaaaat story!

AGlassHalfEmptyNoLonger · 19/09/2012 18:56

Not so sure you would like them, but I know my Ds LOVES these In fact, they got him choosing to read, when before he would read the absolute bare minimum he could for his reading homework. Now he is even reading to himself in bed some nights (and other books to these as well).

Fizzylemonade · 19/09/2012 19:49

Ds1 aged 9 has just finished The Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan, all about archery and knife throwing training, he loved it.

Has also done Beast Quest to death so he then read How to train your dragon, some Michael Morpurgo, he has got Horrible Histories but they are much harder to read so he prefers the tv series.

Faxthatpam · 19/09/2012 19:52

Anything by Michael Morpurgo, mine all LOVED his stuff. My DS1 got into A Series of Unfortunate Events at this age, and it really turned him on to reading.

wearymum200 · 19/09/2012 20:34

I was just going to recommend Ranger's apprentice series too. They seem to fulfill the same quest need in ds1 as BQ ,but are much better! (much more text dense, tho' ,maybe leave it a bit if that would put yr ds off)
Of the Blytons, the only ones ds1 has taken to are the "adventure" series; again, lots of exciting action... see a theme?
Some of the My Story books have also gone down well with ds1; esp the Battle of Britain and Jutland ones.

sittinginthesun · 19/09/2012 20:47

We went straight from beast quest, to the how to train your dragon series. DS1 is now stuck on the Horrible Histories and Science books.

terrywoganstrousers · 19/09/2012 20:50

Can't help as I have a girl but wanted to say your thread title made me laugh as its an echo of us last year except with the Rainbow Fairies stories trash. I have a feeling Beast Quest is the boys equivalent to this dross.

fruitcorner · 19/09/2012 21:04

I would add the Tom Gates books and Harry potter, tintin and asterix.
