Name labels - iron-on, sew-in, clip-on, woven or printed?!

Has anyone got recommendations on which are the best type of name labels to buy? I don't fancy sewing but an worried the iron-on ones will fall off, and the clip-on ones will be scratchy....

I use these www.attachatag.com because I am too lazy to sew and iron on labels keep coming off. We have an unusual surname so the same tags do for both boys.

Solo · 03/07/2012 18:46

Oooh! like those! but very expensive!

LordFlasheart · 03/07/2012 18:51

[[https://www.labels4kids.com/product/71/stikins_new_stick_on_clothing_labels] we use these]

LordFlasheart · 03/07/2012 18:51

grr

IWantAnotherBaby · 03/07/2012 18:52

Sew-in, definitely. DS ending year 4 at present, and all lost items are returned promptly because of clear labelling. In his first year I even used to label socks, but decided life far too short and socks far too trivial for that...

We also have stick-in labels for shows, water bottles, lunchboxes etc, which seem to stay put very well.

I am now starting the labelling for DD to start reception in September... one or two sewn in each evening in front of TV...

itsatiggerday · 03/07/2012 18:53

So next stupid question - where do you buy sew-in labels from?

Solo · 03/07/2012 18:57

You can get embroidered sew in labels from uniform shops and they are quite reasonable too. My top tip (apart from my one above) would be to order many more than you think you'll need. They usually work out pennies more and you will always use them!

CharlieSt · 07/07/2012 20:12

I agree with MrsRogerSterling's recommendation regarding the Iron-on name tags from www.mynametags.com. They're easy to use & don't come off in the wash.

I was a repeat customer of theirs for a couple of years using the name labels for nursery & school uniform. In fact I was so impressed that I now work for My Nametags!

WinstonWolf · 07/07/2012 20:22

I've used the attachatags before but now just opt for a laundry pen as it's far less hassle.

mumnosbest · 07/07/2012 20:26

pens fade and wash off. iron ons fall off. unfortunately sew ins can be cut out by dishonest people who like your new clothes (talking from bitter experience).

i write initials on thick seams (where it doesnt go through) in nail varnish

Just carry a black sharpie in your purse at all times and when in doubt....write his/her name on it. Don't forget shoes....ds went on a skating field trip and at the end when the last pair of shoes was left and ds insisted they weren't his, but teacher decided to put them on him anyway...(they were his of course...new ones by several weeks that he had forgotten he had).

RottenRow · 09/07/2012 06:05

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong with my sharpie? It just bleeds into the fabric and is unreadable. Did I get the wrong sort?

wishiwasonholiday · 09/07/2012 06:14

Mynametags.com iron on ones are fab and don't fall off. If you don't do it properly the edge might come off but you can just press that bit again.

HandMadeTail · 09/07/2012 06:22

I use embroidered ones for most things. They are a bit expensive, but reusable.

I do label socks with iron on labels. DD1's friends laughed at her at first (she is in senior school) but now, if there is an old sock in the corner, she doesn't have to touch it, as it doesn't have her name on it. I just thought everyone labelled socks, as my mum always did. Blush

Something I have learnt is that they are labels, not electronic homing devices. Just because you label your DC's clothes doesn't mean they will never be lost.

HandMadeTail · 09/07/2012 06:23

I was going to say, I have never found any satisfactory way of labelling shoes.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 09/07/2012 07:28

Life is to short to iron or sew so I stick. I use Stikins which I saw on here, they do clothes, shoes, lunch boxes and shoes. Did use a pen and write on the labels but Stikins are quicker .

helpyourself · 09/07/2012 07:42

Sew on. It's not that hard and they lasy for ever.

SofiaAmes · 09/07/2012 08:43

Use the Sharpie on the label. Shoes....label inside of tongue. I started with sew on labels, but realized that ds was growing out of things as fast as I could sew on the labels!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 09/07/2012 09:08

We use these for shoes.

shrimponastick · 09/07/2012 09:14

I bought the sew in type when DS started school. He is now in Year 9 and we are still using them.

I don't like passing clothes on to the charity shop with name labels still on - and these are easy to unpick , and use again.

I did buy some iron in labels as back up recently - they are good for shoes - and camping items etc - but they are impossible to remove.
