Is every reception class in the land named after an animal?

Obviously not. But I wonder if there are many that aren't! DS1 is going into Tigers.

A friend's DD is going into Bluebells and the other class is Snowdrops. DS would not be happy about that!

(Obviously not massively important etc etc, just wondering)

I thinks so, ds is going to be a dragonfly.

blueberryboybait · 27/06/2012 13:51

Nope, we only have a one class intake so they are just Reception. :(

BloooCowWonders · 27/06/2012 13:53

No - just a number !

However, the groups are animals. But why on earth choose 'moose'??? My dc know only chocolate mousse :)

Pascha · 27/06/2012 13:55

My local primary school is castles. Reception is Sandcastles and the other years are all named after localish real castles.

Sittinginthesun · 27/06/2012 13:56

Ours is just "Reception". The groups are currently colours or animals. At one point, DS1 was Red, a Badger, and a Hexagon.

No names here but just a one form entry school.

However..... I was interested to note that the children were quickly assessed and put into groups with animal names. Big powerful animals for the competent readers etc and small rodently/slow/timid animal names for those requiring greater assistance with phonics and literacy in general.

The next year there was a new teacher and a space theme was used with Rockets for the most able. Year 1 used multi sided shapes with the more sides on the shape the higher the deemed ability of the group. Circles and triangles being at the other end of the spectrum.

Most dc worked it all out by half-term so the cryptic cover up was a bit of a waste of time really.

Trees. Trees this year, trees next year, trees the year after that.

No differentiation groups yet though, so I look forward to what we get then...

workshy · 27/06/2012 13:59

classes are the year number then teachers initials eg 6NB (miss B's class)

foundation 2 aka reception, are put into groups which this year are helicopters, tractors, trains & rockets

the rest of the school are in groups but not fixed groups so no names

mistlethrush · 27/06/2012 13:59

We have letters for each form that correspond with the first letter of the Teacher's name. Groups this year are split into semi-precious stones.

ShowOfHands · 27/06/2012 14:00

I have NEVER heard of this. DD is merely in reception. They have 'houses' which I assume other schools have too. 4 groups, assigned a colour and a name and the groups compete for the housepoints award and sports day cup etc each year but it spans the whole school. They're named after local important people, same as when I was at school and was in Edwards House, named after a bloke (George Edwards oddly enough) who built a park for local deprived children many, many years ago. And we were very thankful for it in 1995 because you could hide really well in it, drink cider and smoke spliffs*.

*Not me btw. I was dull and probably in school reading a book.

Frontpaw · 27/06/2012 14:02

All classes named after teachers - full name for reception, initials for older: Reception Jane, 1M...

4boyzmum · 27/06/2012 14:07

PeppermintCreams · 27/06/2012 14:26

This year nursery is fruit, and the rest of the school is colours. Not sure what it's going to be next year?

akaemmafrost · 27/06/2012 14:28

We are trees as well onesandwich. Not in London are you?

Posey · 27/06/2012 14:36

We have planets.

Elibean · 27/06/2012 14:46

dd1 was a Tiger.

dd2 is a tree...seem to be a whole forest of those around, clearly popular!

noramum · 27/06/2012 14:51

Classes are colours, DD is Green and will be Gold when she moves to Y1.

In her class the reading groups are set up as animals, not sure if DD is a tiger, elephant or monkey.

In a friend's school, the classes are just named by the teacher, so Ms Smith's class etc.

When we visited schools most had either animals or flowers.

Moomoomie · 27/06/2012 14:51

Year group. Teachers initial.
Eg 5S is year 5. mrs Smith .

Floggingmolly · 27/06/2012 14:54

Solar system here.

Nectar · 27/06/2012 14:54

When I was at primary school we were just year 1 through to 6, (one class per year).

In about year 3 though, the class was split into groups: flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables. It didn't take any of us very long to work out that those who needed a lot of help daily were in the 'vegetables' groupShock

I don't know if this group name was intentional or just an unfortunate coincidence!

tvfriend · 27/06/2012 14:54

Just 'Reception' here too- feel like I'm missing out a bit...

NoLogo · 27/06/2012 14:57

Herbs throughout the whole school here. DS1 is in Tarragon and DS 2 will be joining Bay class in September.

TheOldestCat · 27/06/2012 14:58

DD is an otter; the other class are owls!

treas · 27/06/2012 14:59

Sorry Noramum I misread that as Clearly Poplar!Blush
