Is every reception class in the land named after an animal?

Obviously not. But I wonder if there are many that aren't! DS1 is going into Tigers.

A friend's DD is going into Bluebells and the other class is Snowdrops. DS would not be happy about that!

(Obviously not massively important etc etc, just wondering)

Ours were all colours but they are doing a big shake up this year so will probably end up as animals instead.

NorbertDentressangle · 27/06/2012 15:04

Colours for each class at our school.

The animal names and flower names remind me of when I was in Brownies many, many years ago.

BikeRunSki · 27/06/2012 15:08

At my old primary school, they were Magenta, Turquoise and Jade.

nannyof3 · 27/06/2012 15:16

The classes are all names of the local roads !!!

theotherboleyngirl · 27/06/2012 15:16

ours are trees - and Reception start of the theme by being called Saplings...

DS at one stage was in a maths group called dohechedrons (very unlikely I've spelt that correctly). I decided the teacher was getting her daily laugh from that one.

He's also at various stages been a cherry, a banana, an elephant and currently an Eagle...

I think class names should be more true to form, with names like "Piss ants", "Toe rags" and "Bloody Buggers". My favourite would be "Piss Ants" though.

I think if maths that's going to be a dodecahedron (12-sided shape) but if they also had plant themes, there's one called a dodecatheon !! :)

We will have Robins and Wrens. At least in Reception. Hope mine gets Robins as we have a very lively family of them in the garden!

ceebeegeebies · 27/06/2012 15:45

Nope - just one Reception class which then branches off into mixed-classes throughout the rest of the years.

The classes are called after painters but I have yet to hear anyone (parents/teachers/children) actually refer to the classes by those names - they are just Reception, Yr 1 or Mrs X's class etc.

ceebeegeebies · 27/06/2012 15:46

However, I should add that they do have animal names for the groups within the class such as 'happy hippos', 'eager elephants' etc Grin

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/06/2012 15:48

We have trees, reception is Beech class, the house groups are colours and animals though, red foxes for example.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 27/06/2012 15:52

All classes in the school have names with a space theme. In reception DS was in Moon, this year Mercury.

Snoopkat · 27/06/2012 15:52

Trees here too. Trees for all 3 infant years. 4 (or 5) classes in each year. Lots of trees!

Within classes the groups correspond to the topic they are covering. I.e Under the Sea, my DD was a Dolphin...

Very exciting :)

BrainSurgeon · 27/06/2012 15:56

At DS's schools they will be either Frogs or Moles. Can't decide which one i dislike more

BrainSurgeon · 27/06/2012 15:58

Snoopkat you should check out this thread - apparently dolphins are not ALL that popular Grin

DS is about to go into a reception class named after a semi-precious stone. The rest of the school (including the other reception class) are precious stones. I may complain. He is my PFB, damn it, not my S-PFB.

I've told this story before but re the groups within a class - my top infants class was split into Apples, Birds, Cats and Dogs according to your age. Then the teacher tweaked it slightly so the same groups were actually according to ability/behaviour. Then she divided us into three and renamed the groups: the Full-Time Workers, the Part-Time Workers, and the Timewasters & Layabouts.

EcoLady · 27/06/2012 16:09

There's a school near me where each class is a cat: tigers, lions, ocelots, pumas, panthers, etc

Frikadellen · 27/06/2012 16:22

the one in the primary my youngest is in is simply called class 1 (only 4 classes in the school) The school my oldest two started in the reception classes were called Pine and Cedar. In the School my son started in it was simply called reception.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 27/06/2012 16:22

no we dont we have mrs. whatevers class and mrs. soandsos class.

no animals, plants, insects, flowers or birds at this school

sleepingbunny · 27/06/2012 16:31

Classes are named after modern musicians at ours. Quite often a bit obscure. Often alive. Sometimes they visit - sure it must be quite flattering to have a class named after you, and the kids have a little display about 'their' musician on the wall.
I found it a little disconcerting when I first went round the school to have a Y6 student discoursing fluently on some modern composer or other - and then pointing to the pictures of 'when we were invited to see him recording'. It's clever, I think. But frequently a b*gger to spell.

TodaysAGoodDay · 27/06/2012 16:39

Ours are just called Reception and Yr1 - 6. no names.

JellyBelly10 · 27/06/2012 16:39

More trees here, 6 classes all named after trees and the school has a tree-related name too...and the pre-school attached to it has a tree-seed related name...if that makes sense. My sister is a TA and worked in a school where the Reception class was divided into 4 groups according to ability to do numeracy and phonics work. Each of the four groups was named afetr a different Disney cartoon character which was supposed to be random enough so that the children weren't aware who was 'top' and who was 'bottom'. However, whilst one group was called Bambi and the two middle groups had equally ok Disney names, the bottom group was called Dumbo!!! Shock

Sonatensatz · 27/06/2012 16:56

Our infant school is animals, lions, giraffes and zebras in yrR, Badgers,Foxes and Squirrels in yr1, Seahorses, dolphins and Starfish in yr2. Junior school have year number and teachers initials. Lots of other schools in our area use animals too.

Bunnyjo · 27/06/2012 16:57

DD goes to a small village primary school (only 3 classes in the whole school) and they are just called Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/06/2012 17:02

We have insects for Reception and then I'm not sure what as they go up the school.

He is very chuffed to be a Ladybird Grin
