Skirt or pinafore?

Which should I choose for reception? I imagine pinafore is more practical and comfy? What do you think?

I think pinafores look really cute, add an extra layer of warmth and, unlike a skirt, you don't have to worry about them fitting round the waist. DD likes the M&S zip up ones because they are easy to change in and out of for PE.

bradbourne · 14/06/2012 18:58

Pinafores look nicer, I think. Just make sure you get one that is easy for your daughter to take off/put on unaided.

bigbadbarry · 14/06/2012 18:58

Pinafores!

bigbadbarry · 14/06/2012 18:59

(I'd get some trousers too they just look adorable IMO and very practical for wet cold winter days)

littlemissnormal · 14/06/2012 19:01

My DD has been wearing the M&S zip up one all year and it still looks good as new!

But to be honest, for the price that they are online I got her the 2 pack of skirts as well as the pinafore and I've done the same for the next school year as they're currently 20% off with free delivery.

littlemissnormal · 14/06/2012 19:02

And YY to trousers too; my DD likes wearing them on her PE day as she has trouble getting tights on quickly.

ReportMeNow · 14/06/2012 19:16

There's a M&S code for £5 off M&S of you spend £30 online

Izpie · 14/06/2012 19:19

My dd has 2 m&s pinafores and they're great, however she doesn't find them easy to dress/undress herself in them so it's trousers or skirt for PE days.

howhardcanthisbe · 14/06/2012 19:20

Pinafore! Cosy and stop their shirts being untidy!

ontheedgeofwhatever · 14/06/2012 19:35

Pinafores - if dd wears skirt and top she ends up with a builders bum and a dirty shirt Grin

peppajay · 14/06/2012 20:51

I like pinafores but when I was little I never wore them so I asked my mum why and she said because if you spill anything down the front (top) bit it has to be washed and easier to wash shirts as have several rather than a pinafore!!! So my DD has 1 pinafore, and 2 skirts!!!

dikkertjedap · 14/06/2012 21:05

Trousers are way easier (no need for tights) and also warmer and less likely to hurt their knees ... but possibly less cute .

ramonaquimby · 14/06/2012 21:06

why don't you ask your daughter what she wants to wear?

missmapp · 14/06/2012 21:08

pinafores!!
i ve been threatening dh that I'll get one for ds2 as I love them so much and have no dd!!

AChickenCalledKorma · 14/06/2012 21:50

Whatever the child (a) wants to wear and (b) can get on and off easily. (Pinafores with buttons on the straps are a lot trickier than skirts with elasticated waists - have mercy on the poor teacher that has one hour for a PE session, most of which is spent changing into and out of PE kit!)

shattereddreams · 14/06/2012 22:03

My dd manages side zips on her pinnies. Easy peasy she says.
In YR.
Pinnies are way better because they tend to pull their skirt down to go to the toilet and of course they can't tuck their shirt back in.
Add to this the fact all shirts are about 2 inches too short (obv saving costs on material in the recession (unless you're M&S in which case you only make clothes for short bodied midgets)) and their vest will be longer than their shirt... It's a sure fire way to have a scruff bag Dd at the end of the school day.
buffs own self with pride DD always looks much smarter and neater than girls in skirts.

BsshBossh · 14/06/2012 22:23

So how many pinafores and/or skirts would you buy. I was thinking 2 pinnies and 1 skirt (for PE day)...

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 14/06/2012 22:23

I bought pinafores for yr r, DD would wear only trousers. At the start of yr 1 I bought trousers, DD decided to wear skirts. I like the skirts as I just wash her messy tops, and don't often need to change the skirt every day.

I'm wondering what she'll wear next year. Hopefully skirts again. I've got elastic waist ones from John Lewis that are easy to get in and out off for PE and DD finds them comfy.

bigbadbarry · 14/06/2012 22:44

Oh, my DD1 makes skirts messy too. Dinner or paint, every day.

bigbadbarry · 14/06/2012 22:45

(Big advantage of a pinafore is being able to put it over a dinner-stained polo shirt if necessary ;) )

timetosmile · 14/06/2012 22:52

another vote for pinafore.
I bought 5..simply because for an extra £6.99 or whatever there was never any angst about knowing there would always be a clean and ironed one in the wardrobe.

shattereddreams · 14/06/2012 23:26

I also found by march dd pinnie was half way up her thighs.
Growth spurt.
So this year Y1 at the start of the year I am buying 2 age 6 pinnies and 2 age 7. So I manage the growth spurt and have them for year after.
Ditto cardigans.
Her polo shirts are still plenty big enough.

And tights, I'm going to buy 5 pairs 6-7 and 5 x 7-8 because they shrink and if they fall and tear....

There is never the uniform you want when they grow or ruin it from Nov to June....

I found she wore short white socks in Sept. long knee grey socks Oct, tights Nov, Dec thru March, back to long grey and now back to ankle white. (not a fan of long white socks!!)

GrimmaTheNome · 14/06/2012 23:33

Zip-front pinafore for little ones. I found they washed easily so 2-3 enough even with a messy eater.

DDs school uniform was pinafore for infants, skirts for the 'big girls'.

Hi MDM:

A lot of the little girls at our school are fed up being teased about seeing their nickers when they play on the climbing frames or bars so there's been a gradual trend to buying culottes - M&S do a pair that look like a skirt but have the advantage of being 'shorts' link here:

You have done me proud, once again. Lots of great advice! Love the suggestions of asking DD what she would like to wear... goodness knows what concoction we'd end up with!
