Skirt or pinafore?

Which should I choose for reception? I imagine pinafore is more practical and comfy? What do you think?

Definitely pinafores - 5 year olds don't understand the concept of tucking polo shirts in neatly ime. And they are warmer and generally smarter. Trousers are good for PE changing (but not so good in puddles - it's easier to put wellies over tights on the school run).

No no no to asking the opinion of a 5 year old on school uniform - if they offer it up then do your best at humouring them, then buy a pinafore Grin

Trousers! Or culottes. They spend a lot of time cross-legged on the floor.

shattereddreams · 17/06/2012 08:50

That's why I like a pinnie with a full pleat all the way around... Not the nasty cheapo ones M&S make.
The full pleats allow for covering laps when cross legged!

DD starts reception in Sept. I've bought both skirts and pinafores. She prefers the pinie so I'll probably get another one. The advantage here is that they're supposed to wear logo'd polo shirts which are about 8 times as expensive as plain ones, no-one will know what she has on under a pinafore Wink

Trousers. Skirts and pinafores lead to either flashing and fiddling issues in summer or replacing a couple of pairs of tights a week in winter.

DD has a skirt, a pinafore and 2 pairs of culottes from M&S, the culottes are her favourite, then the skirt and Pinafore last choice. I am not fussed by dirty polos as they are white so can be bleached clean if all else fails.

DD's uniform was pinafore for infants; then skirt in juniors.
IME pinafore are easier at that age.
Then a school dress in the summer.

I don't like school trousers - material usually looks uncomfortable and trouser bottoms get soggy in the wet/snow - tights or leggings under the skirt/pinafore work better imo. The girls at my school normally opt for pinafores or skirts.

Hulababy · 17/06/2012 09:05

BTW - school trousers are generally NOT WARM - def not as war, as skirt and tights. That's both from my own experience (I never chose trousers in cold weather myself) and from experience of the children in my class - the girls in skirt and tights are usually warmer than the boys in trousers. Abd trouser bottoms get wet and uncomfortable.

I hated the pinafore which was only option in infants it made DD look like a sack of potatoes. What I really love is her summer uniform of tailored shorts I would happily have her wear this all year round looks really smart and very practical.

Trousers, but not the plastic bin liner ones, but proper cotton
