Is your school giving level 6 SATS to some year 6 children?

A friend's school is doing this - asking the brightest children to sit level six as well as the normal SATS. Not sure whether I think it a good idea or not - it seems to put them under a lot of pressure.

She said she would read the info again but thought they had to do both as the subject is english overall. Most posters seem to say that their dc are doing just reading though.

Scholes
"As we said to DS yesterday, he's learnt all he needs to at primary school now."

I find this a bit odd - along with end of SATs parties and the like. There are 9 more weeks of the school year left. DS's class had normal English and Maths lessons yesterday, plus creating Olympic torches, as the school very sensibly doesn't see SATs as anything other than a short (although important) week of interruption to real learning.

Yes some of the things they will be learning - independence at a residential, cycle safety during cycling proficiency, dance, singing and drama for the end of year show, debating skills in a mock court activity - will be 'out of the oridinary', along with the normal 'end of year' celebrations like concerts, sports days, the swimming gala and the last night disco.

However, it is absolutely clear that it is LEARNING, including a really healthy dose of academic learning, that will be continuing right up to the end of the year, so that the children are best placed to 'hit the ground running' at their new schools in September.

Teacher - I am so jealous.

Yesterday DS did rounders, baking and watching a DVD.

Because he's gluten free he couldn't even eat the baking.

I can still see where scholes is coming from....but I dont think she meant it as they stop learning now !......

No matter how a school has played up or down the SATS school work and H/W were based on SATS questions and answers.

Now they are free to enjoy a different "style" of learning without any pressures....My ds is going to be doing lots of science experiments and things as they did not science SATS and so got a bit pushed aside...meybe English wont be reading a passage and writting about it but having dedates about it....I dont know all of what they will do but I am sure it will be preparing them for secondary school just as much as the Sats are suppose to have been doing !

Oh and they will be going swimming...much to the annoyance of his brother in yr4 who now WONT be going for the rest of the term !!!

I'm totally against them wasting the last 2 months of term. You just end up with trouble as they lack their familiar structure. By all means do some fun stuff, they've earned it, but they should be continuing with lessons or projects of some kind.

Simbo i dont think there last 2 months of school will be wasted ...but really could they or us really cope with any more English H/W that was the same as those practice sheets !!!

I would like him to be in a position to start (being made) to read easy classics for the week and then ? write book review...it was not something he came home with to do in the last few months.....I think the next 2 months are to get children out of SATS mode of thinking and explore !??? I am sure the lessons will be there but just different ??
