Phonics - right stage for halfway through Y1?

Not sure if my dd's school is 'behind' in teaching the phonics phases - the newsletter this week says that in phonics they are using the sounds ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, ar, or, ir, ou, oy, air to make words.

They don't seem to place much importance on phonics, e.g. sending home look and say books.

Are these sounds about right for February Y1?

did they learn an alternative way of writing these sounds in reception?

ai, ea, ie, oa, oi etc

Jess22222 · 25/02/2012 15:11

I don't know Blush

In reception children should be taught the 44 sounds in English and at least 1 way of writing them. In Y1 they should be taught the alternative ways of writing the sounds.

ai, ay, ey, a_e, eigh, ea, ae,
ee, ea, e_e ,ey
etc

Ah, okay. So they are on track then. Thanks, mrz.

only if they were taught alternative ways of writing ay, ee, igh,ow,oo, ar, or, ir, ou, oy, air in reception otherwise they are 6 months behind

slightlysalted · 25/02/2012 15:43

That's as clear as mud to be mrz!

slightlysalted · 25/02/2012 15:43

to me!

mrz · 25/02/2012 16:02

in reception children should be taught s,a,t,i,p,n,c,k.ck,e,h,m,d,g,o,u,l,f,b,ai,j,oa, ie,ee,or,z,w,ng,v,oo, oo , y,x,ch,sh,th, th ,qu,ou,oi,er,ar,ue, air, ure ...

then in Y1 taught the the sound s can be written s, ss, sc, st, ci,cy,ce
(sun, grass, scissors, castle, circle, cycle, nice)

slightlysalted · 25/02/2012 16:12

Thanks for coming back. It is a bit clearer but your post of 15.23 seemed unfathomable.

mrz · 25/02/2012 16:21

The OP said her daughter's school is teaching the sounds ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, ar, or, ir, ou, oy, air to make words she didn't know if they had been taught in reception or were just learning them for the first time so I was replying to her post
Ah, okay. So they are on track then. Thanks, mrz.
by saying they are only on track if they had already covered the sounds in reception ... if they are being taught for the first time then they are half a year behind

slightlysalted · 25/02/2012 16:30

I think i get it now, ta.

Jess22222 · 25/02/2012 16:56

Thanks again, mrz - I know what to ask at parents' evening now!

mrz, is your 'in reception children should be taught' list the minimum for reception ie that by the end of reception it is expected that NT children with no additional barriers should be able to read and write them?

Or something else?

mrz · 25/02/2012 17:57

and use them to blend for reading and segment for spelling ...
All children should be taught them some will still be learning them at the end of reception

Rosebud05 · 25/02/2012 21:00

Thanks. Does that equate roughly with phase 3 of Letters and Sounds?

mrz · 26/02/2012 10:58

No they should have covered phases 2,3 and 4 in reception and they should be teaching phase 5 in Y1

Orchidskeepdying · 26/02/2012 14:06

Im a year 1 teacher an currently working on phase 5 with my class - I recovered phase 3 and 4 in Autumn term as most of the children although had been taught these sounds were not using them in reading and spelling.

mrz · 26/02/2012 14:19

Revisiting previous knowledge should always be part of the daily routine but to be encountering phase 3 for the first time in Y1 would concern me.

stopthinkingsomuch · 26/02/2012 21:43

Still looking around for information on spelling as I'm worried about where my Year 1 DS is at.

He is still getting high frequency words wrong but this weeks spelling are special, social, station, position, mention, sugar, sure, session, mission, chef. I thought I understood the way they were teaching them but it seems likes there is very little progression just massive leaps. Have I missed something or are these really meant for a year 1?

Mrz would you see these as appropriate? If you do then I'll shut up and have more faith :)

stopthinkingsomuch · 26/02/2012 21:53

Ahhh just found the Letters and Sounds document with these words for phase 5. I'm surprised they do all of this so soon....

mrz · 26/02/2012 21:56

I wouldn't send those words home but I can see some logic in the list. Obviously looking at different ways of writing sh much better than some lists I've seen. I would probably stick to one spelling pattern at a time.

gaelicsheep · 26/02/2012 22:00

This is really helpful, thanks for asking OP. DS is going from Scottish P1 to Welsh Year 1 in 5 weeks time. He's on Stage 3 phonics and is only doing that because I've been working on it with him at home. That sounds like a LOT of catching up he's going to have to do. :-(

stopthinkingsomuch · 26/02/2012 22:03

gaelicsheep: Do not panic. My DC only covered very basic phonics and we joined UK school in year 2. She's got on just fine.

gaelicsheep · 26/02/2012 22:04

Make that 7 weeks time. Still very soon though. Mrz - is Phase 3 Letters and Sounds roughly equivalent to Stage 3 Songbirds phonics? He's working through Reading Eggs and seems to be about at the Phase 3 Letters and Sounds level just now. I think I might have been pushing it a bit much though as he's lost interest at the moment. Sorry for hijack btw.

gaelicsheep · 26/02/2012 22:05

Xposted - thanks stopthinkingsomuch. Your name speaks much sense!
