Up to his room to read abot 7.30/7.45, lights out 8.30.

DD was lights out at 8 IIRC, but she needs more sleep!

It's later on the weekend - lights out at 9/9.30, or later if there's a night out/sleepover on.

SheHulk · 16/01/2012 10:17

DS is 10 in Yr5. Reading at 9, lights out at 9:30, still wants me to sing him a song and have a little chat which takes us to 9:45... Then it's goodbye. I don't know at what time he actually falls asleep. His alarm clock wakes him up at 8, thankfully it's only a 10 min walk to school!

stealthsquiggle · 16/01/2012 10:45

DS is so not going to see this thread - thing is, even with what seems like a way earlier than average bedtime, he is still shattered, especially towards the end of the week Sad

AChickenCalledKorma · 16/01/2012 10:59

stealthsquiggle - have you considered whether his iron levels might be low? DD1 was in a similar state last term - permanently exhausted with dark circles round her eyes, no matter how long she slept.

Someone on here mentioned iron deficiency and I tried her on an iron supplement for a few weeks. She's much better now.

MamaMaiasaura · 16/01/2012 11:00

My ds is almost 12 and bed 8.30 to 9. Up at 7/7.30

stealthsquiggle · 16/01/2012 11:05

korma - he does eat a good diet and does have a very full-on school week, which probably explains it, but I might give supplements a try - thanks.

Groovee · 16/01/2012 11:09

My dd is almost 12. She's in bed by 9pm (depends on what activity she is at) but is rarely asleep before 10pm. My 9 year old is in bed by 8.30pm and often out for the count by 9.30pm.

VikingBlood · 16/01/2012 13:50

DS (9) goes to bed at 8:30, he's allowed to read until 9. It used to be an hour earlier but he just wasn't tired and ended up taking ages to get to sleep, making him tireder the following day. He gets up at 7:30.

smee · 16/01/2012 17:00

Slightly tangental question alert (!), but what do your children do in the evenings on a school night, so say once they're back from school up to bedtime. We need to move ds's bedtime a bit later, but I'm not sure what to do with that time iyswim.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/01/2012 17:20

My DD either reads or watches telly. She is knackered from school so she needs some down time.
Currently it's CBBC.

LineRunner · 16/01/2012 17:26

smee it really depends what time they get home.

Also mine are 14 and 15. But they do get really tired in the week.

Today DS finished at 2.30pm and walked straight home. DD finished at 5pm, and cycled - and she's tired.

They'll eat now and then do homework, watch a bit of tv/YouTube/I-Player, showers/baths and read in bed. My DD will also fb/text friends for a while till sleep, and read some more stuff for tomorrow's school test.

AChickenCalledKorma · 16/01/2012 17:50

smee - DD1 is 9.5 and is supposed to be in bed by 8:30.

Things vary, especially when there are clubs etc involved. But generally, between getting home from school and tea, she plays with her sister - they are fairly self-propelled - do craft, play outside, various inexplicable role playing games and use iPlayer/websites.

After tea is when we do homework, music practice, school projects etc. DD1 has more of that kind of stuff than DD2, so she carries on while DD2 heads for bed. She is also fond of long soaks in the bath! And reading. She can read for hours if it's the right book!

smee · 16/01/2012 17:51

Thanks mine's playing, then tea, and a bit of tv until 7 and then bath/ bed, so I'm thinking what if I extend to 8pm, what do I allow for that hour. Am basically trying to avoid wall to wall tv.

JugglingWithSnowballs · 16/01/2012 18:00

DS (10) goes up between 8.40 and 9.00. Lights out at 9 - Well that's the plan !

Sometimes he manages to persuade Dad in particular to let him "finish watching this episode" of Dad's Army (say)

  • It's been back to back Dad's Army here since Christmas - DH got the box set Grin

DD is 12 and tends to go up more at 9, or when she's finished her homework.

They've had the same bed-time basically for a long time though - it just seemed to be simpler to send them up together, unless of course there was a scrap going on !

Francagoestohollywood · 16/01/2012 18:12

smee, mine is currently doing his homework...
Schools finishes at 4.30 here, so the days they don't have after school activities, they take a friend home, play until roughly 6.39, then dinner at 7, they watch a bit of tv ( or we play cards/ board game together) and then pj, read a bit and lights out at 9.20 ish.

Francagoestohollywood · 16/01/2012 18:14

6.30 I meant

smee · 16/01/2012 18:19

Grin thought that was a bit precise, Franca..!

peeriebear · 16/01/2012 18:19

DD1 (10) and dd2 (5) both go up at 8, I read DD2 a story (and DD1 listens too :)) then lights out by 8.15-8.20. Sometimes I hear them giggling and whispering, but I have to nip it in the bud because if I don't they will start arsing about and turning the lights on (past experience of going up at ten to see them blithely playing, my head exploded into a million red hot shards). If they don't get their sleep they are absolute sods to get up, laying there like groaning sacks of spuds.

Interesting thread.
Y5 age 9.8 goes up to read at 8 and lights out at 8.30. He goes to sleep with his music on. Gets up at 6.50/7.00 and struggles by friday to get out of bed!!

TrinityRhino · 16/01/2012 19:14

dd1 is 11

lights out at 8 on a school night

EssentialFattyAcid · 16/01/2012 19:18

Lights out at 8pm, up at 6.30am

shesparkles · 16/01/2012 19:18

My 9.8ds goes to bed at 9.00, and is supposed to have lights out at 9.30-although I know it's nearer 10 on the nights I'm working and dh is aboutAngry
He does sometimes struggle to get to sleep over the winter when he's not out to play as much as he is in the summer

shesparkles · 16/01/2012 19:19

posted too early! He's up anytime between 7.00 and 7.30

muddywindydales · 16/01/2012 19:23

DD 9.11 goes to bed at 7.30pm to watch a DVD until 8.15 then, lights out while listening to an audio CD.

She reads downstairs from 7pm and sometimes reads instead of watching a DVD.

It all goes out the window on a Tuesday as she has Brownies until 7.30pm.
(Snack/drink,read book 10 mins.,lights out,audio CD.)

DD is always asleep by 9pm.

Later at weekends, say 9.30-10pm. ( a little later if we've been to the cinema/meal out.)
