DD2 is 10 (11 next month) and is in bed, albeit with a lot of protesting, around 9 on a school night. Sometimes slips to 9.30, but no later. But she is up at 0630, on school bus at 0730, and two nights a week not home until 6. She gets an hour's homework (sometimes more) every night, so the 2 nights she doesn't get home until 6 are a bit of a squeeze, time-wise.

"I hope mine dont see this thread. I am super mean. mine go up at about 7.30 have a story and lights out at 8pm."

How do you get them to be so tired? DD (11) has never been an early to bed child no matter what she does through the day. When I have tried getting her into bed early she shouts down the stairs that she can't sleep. She gets up at 6.30 in the week to leave the house for school at 7.35. I aim to have her in bed for 9.00, but more often than not it is later. She has Guides on a Wednesday and that doesn't finish until 9pm anyway.

DD is simply never tired at bedtime.

MoreBeta · 15/01/2012 18:24

Its 7.30 pm and lights out by 8.00 pm. He sometimes reads till 8.30.

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 15/01/2012 18:28

Bunbaker, that's exactly why DD doesn't have a bedtime.
I have tried at various times over the years, but she just gets upset that she can't sleep.

I now know that the best way for her is to stay up until she is tired.

It probably helps that she's an only and I'm single, so no siblings to disturb, and no me wanting alone time with a dp!

Takver · 15/01/2012 18:33

DD is 9.8. Lights out 8.30 in theory, often more like 8.45 in practice. Up at 7 in the morning. But she definitely needs her sleep - a run of late bedtimes if she can't sleep in means she is grumpy & can't get up for school!

Foxinsocks · 15/01/2012 18:56

Ds is 10. He goes to his room sometime between 9 and 10. Nearer 9 on school nights and nearer 10 on weekends. He won't fall asleep any earlier. On weekends when not playing sport, he has massive lie ins. During the week he wakes up around 8am.

littlemiss06 · 15/01/2012 19:01

My daughter is 10 and in yr 5 she goes to bed at 9pm

DilysPrice · 15/01/2012 19:13

According to Dr Richard Ferber in Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems,(you may disagree with him about CC, but he definitely knows his stuff about sleep in general) the typical sleep requirement at that age is around 10 hours, so 9pm to 7am sounds about right.

picnicbasketcase · 15/01/2012 19:15

Bedtime 8.30, lights out 9. Gets up 7.30 ish.

Ragwort · 15/01/2012 19:18

8.30pm (ish) might be 7.30pm tonight after his behaviour this evening Grin - usually gets up 7am ish without having to be woken.

IslaValargeone · 15/01/2012 19:21

Between 7.30 to 8.00 and allowed to read for half an hour, then lights out.
Another in the mean minority it would appear.

Nothing to do with being mean, but how do you get your child to stay in bed and not shout that he/she can't sleep? DD is just nowhere near tired enough to go to bed at 7.30 even though she has to get up for school at 6.30.

yellowvan · 15/01/2012 20:09

Too early according to this! 7:30 (sometimes before), up around 6am on a school morning and 8am or after at weekends. He's always out like the proverbial light though, so must need it.

Foxinsocks · 15/01/2012 20:14

I honestly thing it depends on the child. Ds age 10, my owl like his father, is nowhere near tired till 9 and sometimes 10. Dd age 11, my lark like me, is quite often in bed reading before 9 and falls asleep always before 10.

But dd gets up early and ds never has (or will) I suspect. I am DREADFUL at staying up late Grin but dh practically comes alive after 10pm!

Foxinsocks · 15/01/2012 20:14

Thing = think

3monkeys · 15/01/2012 20:16

Goes up at 8.30 cos we need peace! lights out at 9 but often not straight to sleep.Gets up 7.30 for school ,nearer 9 at weekends. She's 10 and does loads of after school stuff so should be tired!

TimeWasting · 15/01/2012 20:26

At that age I didn't go to bed til gone 9. Always watched Bergerac and definitely saw the first series of Red Dwarf which was on at 9. Grin

Me and Mum night owls though, and never surfaced til 8, so that's still plenty of sleep. If you have to be up at a certain time, that will obviously push bedtime earlier.

jasperJohns · 15/01/2012 20:30

My ds will be 10 in March.

He goes to bed at 7.45 and has a chapter of a book read to him, then he reads a bit until 8.15 or so.

By about Thursday he's demented with tiredness (does loads of extra c. sports - and he takes himself off to bed earlier).

teacherwith2kids · 15/01/2012 20:35

8.30 with an 11 year old here. He does have 1 later night each week because of Scouts.

Up at 6.55 am every morning, LOTS of after school sports so sleep isn't a problem for him.

9 year old DD is another matter. Same bedtime, if possible even more daily exercise, and she does sometimes find it hard to get to sleep. However, she also finds it VERY hard to get up at 6.55!

We do have a 'no electronic things after 7.30 policy', which works really well to wind them down - no TV, definitely no games or anything, just bath then books in their rooms.

Blu · 15/01/2012 20:42

Age 10.5
In bed by 8.20 ish, lights out 8.45 ish. Asleep by 9.
Wakes about 7.30

Elsjas · 15/01/2012 21:41

11 year old. 8.00 bedtime, reading till 8.30 on a school night. 8.30 bedtime reading till 9.00 on other nights, hols etc. Guides one weeknight so bed at 9.30.

stealthsquiggle · 15/01/2012 21:49

Blimey. My 9yo is in bed at 7:30pm (ish), normally asleep by 8pm. Gets dragged out of bed at 7am.

Is it really unusual for them to need 12 hours sleep at this age (he definitely does need it)? Should I be worried?

pointythings · 15/01/2012 22:15

Dont' be worried, stealthsquiggle - mine go for 11 hours if left to it, some children just need more sleep than others.

Bunbaker · 15/01/2012 23:12

I think so. I need more sleep than MIL for example. I wonder why some children need more sleep than others though. DD has never been a 12 hour sleeper, not even as a baby.

8pm seems very early for an 11 year old. I would love it if DD could go off to bed at that time, but now she is at high school she and her friends text each other all the time and 8pm is definitely not bedtime for any of her friends.

northcountrygirl · 16/01/2012 02:21

God I feel like a right cow! Mine are 11 - in bed by 8 and lights out at 9. To be fair - if it's later they're a nightmare in the morning.
