DVDs in class

My son (Y4) tells me today that his teacher is putting on Maths and Grammar DVDs during class time. They watch the DVDs then might do a worksheet or might not. Is this normal in other schools? Why are teachers who and trained and paid to teach sticking on DVDs? He is at the local comp.

Of course the educational aides are vastly different to those used decades ago.

They are also vastly superior.

I don't see the connection to workload.

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:24

You are a teacher then, I am guessing. Tell me why you prefer to put on a DVD than give the children a lesson yourself?

What a presumption! Tell me where I have said that?

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:28

Presumption. You don't have to say anything explicit.

I really don't take your point.

I have not mentioned anything about my own practice.

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:31

Married to a teacher or teacher in family? Just a presumption.

anotherglass, you are not coming across terribly well. Would you be interested in observing some lessons where teachers use DVD clips? This might inform you a little as to their effectiveness.

yellowraincoat · 03/12/2011 00:35

Did you never watch videos at school? We watched loads and I still remember some of it. We used to watch Through the Dragon's Eye and then we made a board game based on it. Sometimes watching a video can really engage kids and help them understand things better.

Of course, they could just sit and add numbers up all day long til they totally hate school and develop a shitty attitude towards it. I spose that could be another option.

handsomeharry · 03/12/2011 00:37

No, you are quite correct. I am a teacher.

The presumption is this - 'Tell me why you prefer to put on a DVD than give the children a lesson yourself?'

I am slightly bemused by this as I cannot see where I have inferred that I would.

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:38

I actually don't have a problem with use of e-aides, it's overuse. That is the issue.

Overuse by lazy teachers. Shock horror.

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:40

Handsome, you really ain't talking straight.

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 03/12/2011 00:41

But how do you know they're being overused? I mean, the smartboard can't really BE overused. It's like saying "oh the whiteboard is being overused".

As for DVDs, well, you don't really say how long they're on for. So you don't know they're being overused. If you have an issue, talk to the teacher. Nothing else you can do.

handsomeharry · 03/12/2011 00:41

Really? Do explain.

yellowraincoat · 03/12/2011 00:42

Or alternatively, homeschool your child. Since you are obviously better than his current teacher.

handsomeharry · 03/12/2011 00:42

Sorry that was to the OP, not yellowraincoat

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:45

Handsome, go get another drink and I'll explain.

handsomeharry · 03/12/2011 00:47

I have a cup of tea here and am ready when you are.

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:47

No need to draw up the bridge yellow. We all know teachers vary in quality. I think ours is a bit overwhelmed by a lot of other issues outside school at mo, which makes this difficult to approach. But we all want the best for our kids.

Jesus, how did I know you weren't drinking. Handsome, you are either spying on your wife or colleagues, but please get a drink.

OP posts:
anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:52

Handsome, you haven't gone to get an e-aide on how to pour a drink Wink wink.

OP posts:
handsomeharry · 03/12/2011 00:53

Spying on my wife?!

You've lost me.

anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:54

Let's drop the biffing. Are you really handsome?

OP posts:
anotherglass · 03/12/2011 00:56

Spying on your wife. Why else do men lurk on mumsnet?

handsomeharry · 03/12/2011 00:58
