Star of the week...nonsense!

My dd, is in year 2 and the teacher chooses a "star of the week" each week. Said star then has the class mascott for a week and sits on a special chair in class for the week.
I get it! It's either name from a hat or pick the kids that need most encouragement. However dd doesn't. She breaks her heart and really questions why it isn't her. She is always well behaved and is very bright, but still tries her hardest all the time and I feel so sad for her, bless her.
I really do not want to explain this to the teacher because I'll look like an arse! So how can I help her not feel so bothered?
I wish the school wouldn't bother with this system!

Can feel your pain as I also have a very well behaved son who has experienced the same sort of delay in being acknowledged. However, it is slightly concering that your daughter is so upset. As others have said this is a perfect time to help her to learn that not every system is perfect.

You also need to encourage her to not always look for external acknowlegement of her behaviour. Talk about her already knowing that she's done well.

Having said this, I do feel for you (and you sound like such a caring mum) but I think you need to be very upbeat and matter of fact about it and not give it too much air time with your daughter. Good luck.

Ds's school have star helper of the day. Turns taken, every one does it when it their turn. They get to do "special jobs" like taking the register to the office and giving out snack or leading the line to assembly. And they get a sticker. DS would like it to be him more often, but he has to wait his turn.

Hi, Is anyone else fed up with the "Super Learner" yellow jumpers. I only say this as it would appear that my son is the only person in his class to have never gotten to wear this jumper since it started over a year and a one term ago. Some kids get it every month and it just makes my son upset and he takes it out on me when he gets home. I have text the school to find out what the policy is to be told that "Children get the yellow jumper when they have earned it and if they haven't earned it then they will not get it." Also told that they "don't all get a turn." It just upsets me now that his friends go round and have this in his face for a whole week and at one time i used to say well done to them and how proud they must be but now i just want to say really. Its great that they are so pleased but when they have had it 5 to 6 times and have to show me i feel like they are rubbing salt into mine and my sons face and cannot say anything in case i upset them or my son. Am i the only one who feels this way....

Jules808 I suggest you start a new thread with some appropriate detail in the title. This thread is over 8 years old.

Thanks - will do...

I'm not a fan of star of the week. Year 1 DD turned to me and said it was a rota and they gave it based on who needs encouragement and not performance. My son has also twigged now... we take star of the week as a bit of a joke I'm afraid. Just tell her it's to encourage the kids who struggle. ..

Been there with my DS who was on the brighter side. Tell your DD that she will eventually get it but perhaps in the last term as the children who are lagging behind get it sooner and sometimes get it more than once so that they can be encouraged to work hard and come at the level required. It is a very fair system IMHO.

The DD in question will now be 14, so hopefully she's got over it by now...

Cracked me up this thread.
I'd posted on it under an old name.
My child was in YR too, now in Y8 Grin

Thanks for the reminder. She still has a very similar sense of injustice in the classroom but now she rolls her eyes.

JeSuisPoulet · 12/01/2020 07:41

Most of the kids twig, but not all of the parents it seems! Dd got it last week and pushy mum walking out with us said "oh you probably got that because you sit next to my dd now!" Shock I was actually quite Grin when dd said she gets one every year without fail!
