Be honest Grin Mine have volunteered some information but I am resisting asking any more.

I'm happy to discuss children with the parent, and to say what NC level they are and what the national expectations for that year group are, and what the child needs to achieve as the next step. That seems fair enough.
But ability groups? Competitive spirit from some parents is ridiculous.
My groups shift all the time, sometimes ability and sometimes not.
Maths groups are fluid as some are fantastic at arithmetic but poor at geometry. We discuss the group names, choose a category and then I pick names which we pull out of a hat to attribute to an ability group for the year. My maths groups are named after mythological beasts, I've had colour groups like turquoise and vermillion, fossils, spices...

Dunno where that extra l came from, we spell them correctly in school, honest.

People are funny-why not ask the teacher?

purpleturtletoise · 05/10/2011 19:45

I haven't exactly 'grilled' as I don't know any of the children anyway. But it does interest me to know what the groups get called - DS1 is in a group called Pelicans for spelling, so I asked him what the other groups were called, and he told me: Giraffes, Elephants, and I think Rabbits. I feel sorry for the rabbits group, because it doesn't sound very exciting compared to the other animals.

becaues the teacher wont say, that's why exotic!

exoticfruits · 05/10/2011 19:52

Thought this was a light-hearted thread?

A teacher should always be willing to talk about your own child, just not to answer daft questions like where is she in the class rankings.
I discuss children matched to their own progress and national standards, which seems reasonable to me.

mrsshears · 05/10/2011 20:12

iamnotinterested are you hoping you dd doesnt come home and say she is in cubic zirconia Grin

Iamnotminterested · 05/10/2011 20:14

Or quartz?! Oh, the shame!Grin

pestopasta · 05/10/2011 20:16

yes i agree exotic and downby with you both- you are clearly right! tbh if i was told by the teacher about links to own progress and national standards i would be thrilled. that 's all i need. its in the absence of anything at all like that i get to be so interested in groups etc! and noone i know would realise i ask these questions of dd2 and i dont ask too many as she wont answer them!

DownbytheRiverside · 05/10/2011 20:17

Why would you assume quartz is LA?
It's fantastically useful and has a huge number of beautiful varieties.
Diamond could be those most impervious to learning. Grin

All that matters is your child is grouped with children of similar ability. It doesnt matter if other kids are in higher or lower groups. Kids need to be confident working at the level they are at
