Order they learn times tables please?

Which order do they learn the times tables in please? I have worked out that it's not 2-12, seems to be something like 2, 10, 5, 3 ???

Also do they still go up to 12 now or do they stop at 10?

And when are they supposed to know them all by?

Ds, in yr 2, has done 2,10 and 5 together, then 3 and 6 together. I think 4 is next but not sure which order after that!

With mine it was 2, 10, 5, then 3 and upwards.

In YR they started counting in 2s and 10s but then seemed to do very little in Y1. Then in Y2 it picked up again and the majority of the class seem to know them all by now apart from DD who is too lazy to practise despite much nagging

Yr1 DD has done 2,5,10 and has started 3,6; DS YR has done 2s. Pretty sure DD will have finished by end Yr2 but don't know what the expectation is - or how high they go!

We do
2s as doubling (but not really as tables)

Then once we get onto tables 'proper'

9 (but usually by this point they 'know' 9s so there is very little extra to learn)
7 (only 7x7 to learn by this point)

Same as teacherwithkids but we also do 11 and 12's as I find these, especially the 12's, very useful when working with fractions

I teach 10x 2x 5x then let my Y2s choose most went for 11x

Expectation is to know all of them by the end of Y4.

I have done 2x and 10x with DD, and we have also done 11x (because it is "easy peasy lemon squeezy"). I want to work on 5x and then 3x and 6x together this summer.

She will learn her times tables in French next year, so I want to get them well implanted in her brain in English this summer.

My youngest 3 did what teacherwithkids does.

They never did 11 and 12x at school but we did them at home. I had to learn 14x and 16 x too because I am very old.

DS has been doing tables all year, he is in year 3. Don't get your poor DCs to learn them early in the holidays, they only then spend all year doing them and if they haven't grasped them by the end of yr 3, having spent every week going over the annoying things for a test every Thusday, then they simply aren't ready to. You may have gathered that if I have to test my DS once more on any times table I am likely to explode with frustration - it's boring! Hoping for something different in yr 4.

Two of mine have been learning (or not) their times tables this year, one in year two and one in year three. It can be boring to keep going over the same tables but a friend of mine came up with quite a fun way of doing it.
He made a video using still images and then got his children to recite the times table in the video as the narration. I have no idea how he actually put the thing together but we are going to try to do the same in the summer (gulp!).
The end result should look something like this:
Anyway, he said his kids loved it and now use the video as a revision aid. Plus, his kids have definitely moved up a few levels since doing this.

It's interesting that schools take 2 years to cover times tables, when in reality, if you take an intense but structured approach, it's possible to get them done in a month or so. I prefer the "doing them in order" approach, but the 2,5, 10, 4 etc approach works well with the type of practice they're doing at school (skip counting etc)

I've done a (free) video on how to get the times tables sorted in a month - sorry it's behind an opt-in, but basically set aside 10 mins a day. Try to get through 50 - 100 questions each session (even if you do less, it'll take 3 months not 2 years) and if your child likes worksheets - great, but using audio, video and offline/online games will make the whole thing more tolerable

It doesn't take 2 years in schools either (for most children) but the expectations are that all children will know a minimum of 2.5 & 10 in Y2 and ALL by Y4 nothing to stop schools teaching them all. Most of my Y2 class learnt 2-12 in a few weeks of 5 mins a day and can now complete 60 mixed table questions in 2 mins

• but that's not the norm, is it mrz? I would estimate that in my DD's year 2 class there would only be a few children, possibly one or two, who could do as you describe.

My son learnt all his in a weekend and my daughter still doesn't know hers (same school same teacher same methods same pace different children)

No I'm in a bog standard primary in a deprived area.

You are a teacher yes? How come your kids are so clued about about TT? Is it the norm? My girl has just or is about to leave year 2 and knows, 2,3,5,10,11 and nearly 4 but I don't think her school ( state in not a deprived area although I come from one of those so undersatnd) doesn't seem to have done much at all on TT.
