Which order do they learn the times tables in please? I have worked out that it's not 2-12, seems to be something like 2, 10, 5, 3 ???

Also do they still go up to 12 now or do they stop at 10?

And when are they supposed to know them all by?

Thanks!

Yes I'm a teacher. I like to think my class are clued up on times tables because I've taught them. As a school we think tables are a useful tool for our children.

I agree mrz that they are very useful - I have a DD in year 5 who still struggles with a lot of maths and still doesn't know them well - and I have at times been a bit frustrated with the year 2 "Syllabus" this year re: it's inflexibility in my DD's school to let the brighter ones, who clearly DO know beyond 2, 5 and 10, show what they are capable of and are expected to work on "Arrays" (?) within the 2,5 and 10 X tables.

2,5, 10 then 3 and 4 IME.

Depends on the child. My Ds saw them written down and was interested when we explained what the purpose was. He then taught himself (easily less than a week spending not long each day). Then he would have competitions with Mum and Dad and speed reciting them and answering them. I would imagine he learnt them in order (if you are learning them parrot fashion first does the order matter....we were not going to say "Oh why don't you learn them this way"). I think the interest from them is what counts.

I think DD did 2, 10, 5
Then 11 at home for fun (up to 99, anyway)
can't remember if 3 or 9 (up to 99) came next - 9s are easy because there is a pattern and the numbers adding to 9 rule. Prob 3 first at school but 9 at home.

Then 4, 6, 8

finally 7 and 12
