All a bit quiet considering today we find out about primary school places

Just thought it was quite strange that here and in the media, it's been rather quiet, considering there is a significant shortage of places and many of my friends throughout the area didn't get first choices (mainly in Bristol City, I'm out in South Glos and have been OK).

How did everyone get on?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Didn't get a place at ANY of our 3 preferred schools. Allocated a place in a rubbish school that even the teachers don't send their kids to. And we're not in catchment for it. Bugger.

[not entirely surprised emoticon]

Good luck tomorrow when you open that envelope, Pinkjenny

ChocolateTeacup · 26/04/2011 16:41

I am in Ringwood and I am very lucky that I got my first choice so pleased my DS1 will hopefully be with some of his friends next to the Preschool his brother and him attend atm

My boss is off, so I am working from home. Just as well, I think.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 26/04/2011 16:56

OP, thats because we don't find out until Thursday.

Mrs Moppet thats just rubbish. Are you going to appeal?

Pinkjenny · 26/04/2011 16:57

Thanks MrsMoppet - I may well be back on here tomorrow starting a type thread.

MrsMoppet · 26/04/2011 16:57

Not sure GiddyPickle - the good schools round here are church schools, hence the problem. I know people who have got into their first choice schools but have been attending church every week for the past 2 years and got the vicar to sign a letter. I, on the other hand, didn't even live in the area 2 years before I had to apply for my DD and I refuse to be told which church I should worship at (if any) ... not even for a school place. It's all my fault; if I had a better attitude we wouldn't be in this mess.

MrsMoppet · 26/04/2011 17:00

No I'm not going to appeal. There's no point. I don't tick the "church" or "sibling" box, both of which have higher priority than my DD. We are just an ordinary family who live in the catchment area of three oversubscribed good(ish) schools. As we have the option of paying for private education, I would rather do that, even though it will be a real struggle, than deprive someone else of a place on appeal. I also don't agree with asking for class sizes to go above 30 just because there are 30 (well, 60+) kids ahead of mine on the list who got in. It's 30 for a reason.

It's still bollocks though!

MrsMoppet · 26/04/2011 17:02

I didn't mean my last post to sound so harsh - I meant that I don't agree with appealing based on class size IF you can afford to go private. But I do still think it's bollocks!

Totally agree Giddy - if for some bizarre reason dd had been bumped out to a school I didn't rate, I would have sacrificed other things and gone private. You've only one shot at this and I would never flame someone for doing anything they can to get the best option for their child. Of course, private doesn;t always mean best but in the face of a rubbish state school, it's about the best you can do in your situation.

When it comes to secondary time, if our local school was no longer as good as it is currently, I would send dd to private in a heartbeat

We won't find out ours for ages, I think it's another three weeks Hmm

We have to be the slowest place in the country for processing applications.

Spacehoppa · 26/04/2011 17:33

We are in our first choice school...finally I can breathe a sigh of relief.

TrinityRhino · 26/04/2011 17:36

online is pnly available if you applied online apparently

pranma · 26/04/2011 18:07

dgs heard early April-he got into 1st choice Reception [Cheshire] even though they live outside the county by a mile or two-his mum[dd] does teach in Cheshire though and dgs has been in Nursery class at chosen school.

WannabeNigella · 26/04/2011 18:08

We don't find out till next Tuesday and it's killing me!

whomovedmychocolate · 26/04/2011 18:27

Oh apparently we find out next Tuesday too Blush

Hopefully they will send term dates so I know when to drop the little buggers off.

JumpingJetFlash · 26/04/2011 18:28

Are you in oxfordshire wannabenigella??? We don't find out til Tuesday also :-/ I have been phoning around loads of before/ after school care and have systems in place for 2 out of the 3 as I'm assuming we have NO chance of getting our first choice! It's such a faff!

whomovedmychocolate · 26/04/2011 18:30

JumpingJetFlash - we are in Oxon. Apparently if you didn't bother to apply online then they will write second class so you won't find out till at least the 8th!

JumpingJetFlash · 26/04/2011 18:47

That would be purgatory :-/ fortunately I did it online but that's really harsh! Particularly as it said on the website you'd get an email or letter on Tuesday. Only moved from Leicestershire in August and they found out AGES ago!

LetUsPrey · 26/04/2011 18:55

Found out by letter on Saturday that DS2 has got a place in our first choice school which DS1 already attends.

Letter was dated today though so our Council (Wigan) appear to have been investing funds in some kind of time travel experiment! Sadly, the letter was not delivered by Matt Smith!

Good luck to those still waiting to hear.

northernrock · 26/04/2011 20:02

In same situation as Mrs Moppet. Both the schools in my immediate area are church schools. I applied for them both and also another school a bit further away but still local.
Got allocated half empty school 50 mins walk away. No buses to get there. No car. No money for private school!

I am really angry too that a school which is down the road from me and funded 90 % by our taxes is allowed to only admit children whose families go to church.
They have created a completely homogenous village school within a multi cultural big city.
Am appealing the non church school. If that fails I guess we are walking to school for an hour every day (and back) since I cant afford to move, especially since the cut in Housing Benefit (working single parent.)

Well pissed off. And stressed!!

Whatevertheweather · 26/04/2011 20:20

Gosh reading this makes me even more nervous! find out on Thursdsy - in Hampshire. 1st choice is (slightly) out of catchment and had recent outstanding ofsted so bound to be oversubscribed. Is the link school from dd's nursery/pre school so most have applied there. Tis a 3 class intake though so there is hope Grin

Sorry to hear of all those who didn't get any of their choices Sad

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 26/04/2011 20:25

PinkJenny and everyone who is waiting I really hope you get the places you want!

I also want to tell thoe who did not, that sometimes these things all work out in the end anyway....I have a number of friends who'se DC are very happy at their schools though they were not first choice.

northernrock · 26/04/2011 20:38

Hmm. Not really going to work out if we have to walk for two hours a day to get to and from failing school that was not on my list of three at all, but thanks for the sentiment Sknitting!
