Hi, I have finally got my DS interested in reading, after much struggling, reading together etc.
Now I need some more books to fire him up further.
He is at present on the third of the Philip Pullman His Dark Materials trilogy and when he's finished that, where do I go next?
I have tried old favourites (mine that is) like Arthur Ransome etc, but he says they are boring.
I think the problem is that modern children are used to the excitement of computer games etc and want in your face action. He really likes Philip Pullman though, much to my surprise.
Advice gratefully received.
Thanks

The spooks series by Joseph delaney?

duchesse · 12/02/2011 14:53

Alex Ryder series? He's a kind of junior James Bond. They're quite big books but if he's reading Dark Materials he should be fine!

Rafi · 12/02/2011 14:53

If he likes Philip Pullman, maybe Harry Potter? Or anything by Paul Stewart & Chris Riddell. Cressida Cowell's How To Train Your Dragon series is great too (and don't go by the recent film).

These. Ignore the bit about them being aimed at young adults. My DS was reading Dark Materials at 10 and he really would not have read Alex Rider past 14.

I have a 10 year old boy he loves:

Skulduggery Pleasant series
Cherub series
Artemis Fowl series
Vampires Assistant series (Darren Shan)
Gone, Lies & Hunger by Michael Grant
Young James Bond
The Edge Chronicles
The Dead & THe Enemy - Charlie Higson

AvengingGerbil · 12/02/2011 15:05

Artemis Fowl series
Percy Jackson series

Mine also loves Varjak Paw and its sequel - martial arts cats!

bellabelly · 12/02/2011 15:06

The Wind Singer is good and if he enjoys it, it's the first of a trilogy...

This one Framed is v good also - not read any more by him but it's on my to-do list.

Katisha · 12/02/2011 15:06

Def Alex Rider series

therugratref · 12/02/2011 15:06

Another vote for the cherub series, my 9 yo has to be restricted or he will read them half the night. He also loved the Hobbit.

Memoo · 12/02/2011 15:08

Anything by Darren Shan, my 10yo ds loves them.

exexpat · 12/02/2011 15:13

Def Anthony Horowitz (not just the Alex Rider series) if he hasn't read them already.

I think 10 was when DS started getting into Robert Muchamore (Cherub series) though be warned that they do stray into more teenage territory sometimes.

Also Alex Shearer is really good for boys that age - Bootleg, Tins, Land Lubbers, Sea Legs to start with, then move on to the older ones like Speed of the Dark and the Great Blue Yonder.

ragged · 12/02/2011 15:44

Sam Hutton Special Agents. DS is also keen on Connor Clover series.

circular · 12/02/2011 18:20

The Anthony Horowicz power of 5 series bit more advanced than Alex Rider).
DD1 was very boyish at 10 and loved them.

I think no.5 is still to be reeased though....

choccyp1g · 12/02/2011 18:21

Michelle Paver "Wolf Brother" series.

TheVisitor · 12/02/2011 18:21

Philip Pullman has also written a series of books starting with the Ruby in the Smoke.

TheVisitor · 12/02/2011 18:22

Oh, and James Patterson seems popular here.

52Girls · 12/02/2011 18:30

My ten yr old son loved The boy in the dress by David Walliams and also a few of the Charlie Higson books

UniS · 12/02/2011 18:57

2nding ALex rider series.
Indiana jones type film tie in books.
The Hobbit.

UniS · 12/02/2011 18:59

Frank Coterell Boyce- Millions, Cosmic, Framed. Cracking good books about boys.

skiphopskidaddle · 12/02/2011 19:04

Susan Cooper books - The Dark is Rising

viewfromawindow · 12/02/2011 19:07

"How to train your dragon" Cressida Cowell. The film is sort of based on it (but the plot is completly different) but there is a whole series. I chose this to do with my class of 8/9yo's as our class book. I have loads of boys and they LOVED it! Ended up buying the whole series and lending them out.

haggis01 · 12/02/2011 19:34

Percy jackson series (the author also has a new series out)
darren Shan series (and the new prequels about Larten Crepsley)
Maximum Ride series
Wolf Brother
Spooks series
Vampirates series
Windsinger trilogy
Doomspell trilogy - mc Nish
Garth Nix books - Sabriel etc
Charlie Bone
Diana Wynne Jones books

However if your son has read the Pullman books he is pretty advanced and could tackle anything!they are quite dense and complex. Well done.

(Waterstones have a lot of the first books in popular series such as Percy jackson and wolf Brother on offer for £1 at the moment - so you can cheaply check out if you might like them )

Februaryblues · 12/02/2011 19:44

Ds likes alot of the above especially Alex Rider. He is currently reading Gladiator by an author Simon Scarrow who normally writes historical books for adults and enjoying it.He has also liked the Time Riders books by his brother.

mumatron · 12/02/2011 19:47

my 10 year old ds has just started on the Skullduggery series. he also likes James Patterson and Andy Macnab.
