A question for teachers, really. Just wondering what level of G and P a child would have to be regularly using to achieve a level 2 or level 3 . Thanks.

I would expect capital letters, full stops and question marks to be used accurately and to see other punctuation used (but perhaps not 100% accurate) and to see correct grammatical structure (noun and verb agreement) and the use of adverbs and adjectives.

Thanks mrz; assuming then that colons, hyphens, exclamation marks, brackets and good connectives are a higher level?

. " " ! ? ,

Sorry couldn't help it Blush.

Using capital letters at start of sentence and full stops at the end. Knowing when to use exclamation and question marks. Using commas - generally when list making within a sentence. Not using CAPITALS in the midDle of words and sentences. Speech marks usage. An indication of joined up handwriting helps towards a level 3 although this does not have to be every word in the sentence.

Right, so in a school that does not teach joined-up writing until the summer term, would this hold children back from a 3?

lovecheese - if I understand you correctly, your DC's school does not teach children to write in joined up writing until the end of Y2?

How do the children write until then?

lovecheese · 02/01/2011 11:36

pre-cursive

OK, thanks.

. ~ level 1
. ? ~level 2
. ? , ! ~ level 3
. ? , ! ... ' "" ~level 4
. ? , ! ...' "" : ; () - ~ level 5

very rough guide
plus capital letters used appropriately.

Bonsoir - realised I missed my chance to answer "with pencils" boom, boom!

mrz the list is great, thanks.

The joined up handwriting would not hold a child back from a level 3 but it would be a bonus if you see what I mean.

As a parent I'm quite surprised that the school do not teach joined up until the Summer term of Y2 as schools around us tend to start at the beginning of Yr2 - having said that I always thought that too early as many Yr1s, my own dd included, had only just begun to standardise the size and formation of the lettering.

Blimey - my ds (Year 2) couldn't use speechmarks but started cursive writing straight away in nursery/reception - weird how they are all different.

lovecheese · 03/01/2011 10:07

omnietyinstables - quite! DD is just starting to do a bit of cursive writing off her own back, for fun, but reliably uses Capital letters, full-stops, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes and speech marks, and fairly reliably brackets, hyphens, colons and .....'s!

I had to ban ellipse with my Y2 class

lovecheese · 03/01/2011 19:23

Why, mrz? Was it being overused?

OP posts:
mrz · 06/01/2011 17:13

yes they used ellipse even in lists!

Feenie · 06/01/2011 17:56

It's ellipsis, mrz. Wink

mrz · 06/01/2011 18:20

It should be ellipses for the plural but even so I've got it wrong ... Blush twice! Blush

Feenie · 06/01/2011 18:25

Yes, but you used the word foci in context a while ago, so that more than makes up for it. Grin

mrz · 06/01/2011 18:26

Shocking mistake once but to do it TWICE!

Feenie · 06/01/2011 18:31

I assumed you might be doing a secret Maths masters on the side...but I only knew what it meant when I'd looked it up!

mrz · 06/01/2011 18:41

Only Big Maths I'm afraid I never got past A level maths

lovecheese · 06/01/2011 19:51

Back to your list, mrz, really surprised to see speech marks coming in at level 4? surely loads of children use them appropriately long before this??
