What are your year 1's spellings this week?

I just wanted to know if anyone else's are as difficult as DS'!

They include 'Canoes' 'tomatoes' 'arrows' and 'borrowing'

I know they've been doing the oe sounds but DS is one of the better spellers in his class and even he struggled with a couple this week. Last weeks included 'when' 'then' 'play' and 'singing' which makes it seem like a big jump to this weeks!

Ds had the days of the week, but was tested today. Not sure what he has to learn for next monday.

luckyJess · 04/10/2010 20:38

They seem about the same level as I would expect My Yr3 DS to have. This weel they have "le" works so, Cuddle, Possible, trouble etc.

hocuspontas · 04/10/2010 20:40

Why are they confusing them with 'canoes'? Confused

Hulababy · 04/10/2010 21:42

I work in a Y1 class. We do not set spellings at all, all year. We do not set any homework bar encouraging the children to read regularly.

DiscoDaisy · 04/10/2010 21:44

My youngest DS is in year 1 and he doesn't get spellings.

mychatnickname · 04/10/2010 21:44

We don't even get spellings sent home at ours.
Are these private schools or are spelling tests the norm in state primaries too Blush

Hulababy · 04/10/2010 21:46

mychatnickname - IME from these threads it tends to be state primaries that set the most challening of homeworks and spellings. MyDD is in a private school and did have spellings from half way through Y1 but they were nowhere near what is epected from some schools I read about on here.

julybutterfly · 04/10/2010 22:03

No it's not a private school. DS is in a mixed year 1/2 class though - I'm beginning to wonder if he's just been given the wrong spelling sheet to bring home Confused

He didn't do too badly with them earlier but I still think they're a bit much!

Whocantakeasunrise · 04/10/2010 22:15

Let's hope very makes it to next weeks list Wink

magicmummy1 · 04/10/2010 23:38

DD is in year 1, and we don't get spellings yet. I think they said they start some time later in the year.

ShoshanaBlue · 05/10/2010 00:16

We get 10 per week:

cow
down
brown
town
soil
boil
coin
tinfoil
we
me

Hope that helps :) We are an ordinary primary school. Our local private school gets 16 spellings a week for year 1.

melpomene · 05/10/2010 00:37

My dd has had words such as chick, chuff, doll, ship.

Northumberlandlass · 05/10/2010 07:53

Ours are an 'oo' sound, so we have:

Soon
School
Loot
Hoop
Glue
Hue
Due
Clue
Sue

and there is one more I can't remember. Strangely enough last year (1) his spellings seems much harder, but now they focus on the tricky ones. He also has to know the meanings, as the teacher will put the word into a sentence.

DS had

shake
smile
closed
excuse

mychatnickname · 05/10/2010 10:41

Think ds is at a very laid back school then. No mention of spellings at all so far.

MoodyM · 05/10/2010 12:08

Hi My DS has;

when
which
phonics
dolphin
chew
grew
are
one
some
come.

I too think these are difficult for him he only turned 5 in June. When my daughter was in Yr1 (6 years ago) they were no where near so hard!

teacherspet33 · 05/10/2010 12:21

None! Don't get them until after Christmas and they start to spell the keywords.

Cortina · 05/10/2010 12:22

Pasturised
Industrious
Loquacious
Utilitarian
Unitary
Democratic
Business
Necessary
Separate
Homogenous

dilemma456 · 05/10/2010 12:29

I still remember a list I took home in year two because it was so difficult

handkerchief

immediately

important

interesting

silence

education

happily

fairies

I learnt it through floods of tears and went in all prepared for my test to find that I'd accidentally been given the test meant for the 9 year olds.

honeyapple · 05/10/2010 12:29

No spellings until juniors (yr 3). The opinion of my school and teachers is that although children may successfully 'learn' spellings for a test- they then DO NOT spell them correctly in their own writing- hence- what is the point?

and 'canoes' is totally random!

dilemma456 · 05/10/2010 12:30

Are you joking cortina or are you a mother of genius children?

womblingfree · 05/10/2010 12:30

DD is Yr One and the words she has to learn to spell/read ar a joke imho, albeit at completely the other end of the spectrum.

A couple of weeks ago she was sent home with a folder, saying we could exchange them when she had learnt how to read/spell them. They included:

He, am, she, all, the....

I know they can't cater for everyone, but DD is 6 (oldest in yr) and was classed last year as gifted and talented in literacy.

What I find really trying is the fact that having sent them back the following day with all her spellings in her homework journal, she still hasn't been given any new words, has not bougth any new books home since the first week of term and apparently her teacher has not heard her read yet Shock

womblingfree · 05/10/2010 12:31

Sorry OP - agree that the ones you DC is getting appear to be a bit OTT in the other direction.

bartonian · 05/10/2010 12:38

Yesterday DS (5) was tested on:

inside
which
mother
place
cried
found
small
friend
through
know

He struggled with friend and through. Is a private school and there are two levels of words given, depending on ability; these are the harder ones. It seems to be about learning how to spell words which aren't phonetic which is useful but does seem tricky for 5 year olds.
