Everyone i speak to on here and in rl, other than the ones that will be at the same school as DS seems to be starting full days straight away.

DS will be doing half days 8.50-12 until the end of term and not doing full days till after Christmas.

Was just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat and weather it is really necessary

dd2 is doing half days till the 13th in Primary One

LoisWillkerson · 02/09/2010 14:41

Full days straight away here.

mrz · 02/09/2010 14:43

Full days when we go back on Tuesday

bigcar · 02/09/2010 14:44

half days for the first 3 weeks here.

VinegarTits · 02/09/2010 14:45

Full days here too, but ds did half days at pre-school last term so is ready for full days

if you feel your dc is not up full days yet then nothing wrong with them starting half days

Hai1988 · 02/09/2010 14:47

well tbh DS did half days for two years in pre-school and the nursery class they have in the school.

So is more than ready for full days, just seems a bit long to have half days for a whole term

is it the schools policy then? i thought they all started on full days in reception?

Hai1988 · 02/09/2010 14:49

Yeah school policy to have the autumn term just half days for all reception pupils.

My ds isn't old enough for school yet but here children only do full time from the term they turn 5. So sept-dec birthdays do full days straight away, Jan -Easter (Which will be DS) do half days to Christmas, and easter-august babies do half days until Easter!

It's because there is only govt funding for full time place from term you turn 5. Many authorities offer full time funding from September, but they don't legally have to and my council (west Sussex) chooses not to.

Makes childcare a bloody nightmare!

nancydrewrocked · 02/09/2010 14:53

Half days for first month.

Hai1988 · 02/09/2010 14:59

I think that system is a good one megon.

DS is 5 on saturday

In some ways I think it is hai1988' as some of the little ones really aren't ready for full days when they've just turned 4. But I do worry that given there is supposedly such a big gap in educational achievement between sept and august born children, then the oldest children are just getting an even bigger advantage by having 2 terms more of full time teaching than the youngest children.

Kewcumber · 02/09/2010 15:30

same here half days until Jan. But they also stagger start dates by age so final group of childrne don;t start until October so I guess it starts them all off at the smae pace in Jan. The after school club offers to do after school activities in the reception classroom until 3 if you want them to.

Ds is half day today and tomorrow, then full time from Monday.

Changebagsandgladrags · 02/09/2010 17:50

On Monday he does 9.55 to 11.30 (hardly worth going) from then on 8.55 to 11.30 for two weeks, then full time.

Rollergirl1 · 02/09/2010 18:50

DD is half days until christmas too. Not only that but she is starting a full two weeks later than the autumn born and spring born children which I think is completely arse-about-face. They should start the youngest first so they have a chance to get used to the classroom and teacher with just a small group. Instead they will go into a full and busy classroom where the other children have had 2 weeks to get to know each other and the teacher.

I think all it will succeed in doing is splitting the class and I think it is a total waste of time.

taffetacat · 02/09/2010 20:14

Our school does half days week one, til 1.30 week 2 then full days.

BubsMaw · 02/09/2010 20:29

DD, spring born, is going half days this whole term. In our school the summer born children also have to go half days for spring term, so some kids won't be going full days until late April. I think most kids would manage more than this.

For the first 4 weeks DD is only going in for 2 hours per day, so it's not even a half day at that. the kids alternate mornings in one week, then afternoons the next, for the first four weeks. Luckily I'm on mat leave for the rest of the year so childcare is not an issue.

Hai1988 · 03/09/2010 10:18

I really dont see the point in the half day thing tbh.

I mean all the children have to get used to doing full days as they will doing it for the next 11 probably more now years.

Some children will find it harder than others but itsnt it more fair if they all get the same start.

we had this last year (ds now in yr1), part time for the first 3 weeks of reception. it's was a right pita. before we moved area, the school dd would have started at, was part time until christmas! nightmare for working parents.

houseofboys · 03/09/2010 14:31

We offered for half days as he was already tired by 3 half days at pre-school. Did the same with my oldest til he was legally obliged to be full time (two terms later) and glad we did, no regrets at all.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 03/09/2010 14:40

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby · 03/09/2010 17:29

Half days till christmas for children born after 1st March here. Full time from Oct half term for those born before the 1st March. AND staggered start. DD doesn't start till the 15th, which is a pain for work. LOL

NoahAndTheWhale · 03/09/2010 20:17

DD doing 9-12 next week then 9-1 the next and full time after that. But only the Sept-Dec birthdays are starting on Monday - all the rest don't start until after Christmas.
