School trousers for tall skinny boys

DS1 is 7. He has long legs and a very skinny waist. M&S age 8 trousers are the right length for him, but are way too big around the waist. They have an adjustable waistband but he finds them uncomfortable if they are pulled in as the button and elastic rub. He can wear them with a belt, but they look a bit bunched up IMO.

Is there anywhere that sells inexpensive skinny boys' school trousers?

NEXT ones are far too big for him too.

The only ones which came anywhere near fitting him were Adams, and you can't get them now! Even they had to be hoiked in.

I might try trimming and stitching the elastic to see if that is any more comfortable.

DS2 is the same, but doesn't seem to mind the elastic. DD just wears pinafores!

Getting him to wear a vest would be the first step!

try Debenhams, they've been the best fit for second year running vs M&S, Asda and Tesco

dd1 is very skinny (2nd centile for weight) and fairly tall and fir teh second yesr running has ended up in Debenhams boys trousers as they fit best. We've had flat fronted and pleat fronted and they're 2 pairs for £11. They have the elastic adjusters on the waist, but are slim cut already, so it's not pulled in so far, so less bunching of material at the back.

bumpybecky · 02/08/2010 15:41

argh! for the second year running....

colditz · 02/08/2010 15:46

Here, maybe?

domesticsluttery · 02/08/2010 15:46

I'll have a look at Debenhams ones, thanks.

Am actually working on the vest idea... bearing in mind that he is the kind of boy who plays football outside in a t-shirt in December it wouldn't be a bad idea! Mind you he is also the kind of child who is never ill, he only missed 3 days of school last year. So my threats that he will catch pneumonia if he doesn't wear his jumper are clearly a PFB over reaction!

Adams

Also what about an elasticated belt?

domesticsluttery · 02/08/2010 15:52

Ooooh, Adams!

Have ordered this belt for him, he had an elaticated belt but it has worn through (and had dinosaurs on, which apparently is "not cool" now he is going into Year 3).

I have got BHS this year with adjustable waist, and they are not too bunched up.

IKWYM though, it drives me NUTS that shops do a range for fat kids now in most stores, but I know sooo many skinny kids like my boys (who both eat like horses but are never still!).

It is so hard to get nice jeans etc that dont look like they are wearing a nappy under them. H&M clothes come up quite slim in everything but of course they don't do uniform.

domesticsluttery · 02/08/2010 16:15

Yes I definitely know more skinny kids than chubby kids, especially boys. It makes you wonder who buys the bigger ranges.

Do BHS have a store online?

Next do jean style school trousers which seems to be very slim fitting and are the only ones that fit my very thin DS

ScoobyHaventAClue · 02/08/2010 17:11

M&S used to do a long legged trouser - I've bought these a few sizes smaller. Have similiar gripes about skinny kids - their trousers always look awful.

ScoobyHaventAClue · 02/08/2010 17:35

M&S longer length trousers

BollockBrain · 02/08/2010 17:38

There are some lovely ones in Next. They are called NEXT Jean style. they are like a slimmer fit and look really good. I bought them for the first time earlier this year and I hae to say they are the nicest school trousers you can get.

Had so many years of these huge baggy ill fitting ones that it is nice to finally find some good ones.

cakesaregood · 05/08/2010 22:52

How about the National schoolwear centres, they pride themselves on having 'fitted' trousers to avoid 'bunching'. No website because they're franchised, but the shops seem to be on local business websites so appear on Google.

I seem to remember they were about the same price as M and S adjustable waists. These had the advantage for us in that DS1 is a delicate flower and stockier DS2 will wear them next year

CurlyhairedAssassin · 05/08/2010 22:58

Yep, can second (third?!) the longer length M&S trousers......DS had them last year and will be getting the next age up soon.

bullethead · 06/08/2010 11:24

M&Co got it right for my skinny son no 1. Son no.2 is even skinnier and ended up using snakebelts as they're quick and simple to unclasp. Then he got too cool for that and insisted on them sitting on his hips on the cusp of indecency!

ShellingPeas · 06/08/2010 14:20

I'll second the Next jean style trousers - they are slim fitting but with the elastic waist too. They are the only ones that don't make DS look like he's wearing clown pants.

lillybloom · 08/08/2010 21:26

I'll third Next jeans style. My ds has the same issue with trousers but these ones fit perfectly. He refuses to wear belts as they are too "fidily"

preggersneveragain · 09/08/2010 12:46

Was soo pleased to find this thread. Am having same problem finding trousers for DS1 who is slightly-built and not tall either. He starts P1 in a few weeks so this is all new to us.

I agree with Stillbobby - it drives me nuts the time and effort I spend scouring shops for slimmer fitting trousers. We need a mumsnet campaign for the High street to start doing a slimmer-fit range - or has this been tried????!

cornflowerblue · 05/10/2010 14:06

If anyone's still looking for slim fitting school trousers, have you tried your local school uniform shop? The Blue Label trousers made by Innovation are half elasticated and have a slim waist - for example, age 6 has a waist size of 18 inches (unstretched). They are also available online. They're about £7, which isn't much more than the high street, and are very good quality. My 6 year old son has had them for the last two years and they've been excellent.

Cupcake2000 · 05/10/2010 14:14

BHS!! They are Fab! Both my sons are tall, and i always find the waist too big and trousers really baggy (asda ones!) BHS do a slim fit trouser that fit and look great.
