Where to buy non-polyester trousers for boys ?

I have noticed that many retailers sell boys trousers made from at least 65% polyester and the rest is from viscose or cotton. I am not being picky but I would love my boy to wear trousers having higher percentage of natural materials. Where do I buy them? He is going to be 5 this autumn. Many thanks!

marks and spencer have them, in the 3 for 2 atm

marketed as "skinkind"

tesco did have them but i think last time i looked they were sold out, but worth a gander anyway

Octavia09 · 17/07/2010 22:53

I checked Tesco online and they do have Fairtrade trousers but I have no idea whether there are in the local Tesco. Will check M&S, thanks.

M&S have the pure cotton trousers as "thisisyesterday" mentioned above. SHould I buy the uniform now or later in August? When do parents buy it and is everything available all the time?

I would buy now as 3 for 2 is on and also IME they tend to run out.

I looked at all cotton ones but annoyingly they don't have adjustable waists which all my DC require (they are not especially thin, well the DSs anyway, just clothes are too FAT!)

Just to make you aware OP - maybe go and try some on.

hellymelly · 17/07/2010 23:26

This is my current bugbear too.I need grey and the M+S skinkind skirts and girl's trousers are in black so can't get them.(and I also need adjustable waists for skinny minnie)And never mind the polyester, what about the teflon? There have been calls to ban it beacuse it is a known endocrine disruptor and carcinogen,it persists in the environment,WHY are all the uniform sellers putting it all over small children's clothes??.John Lewis is awash with it.I don't understand why parents aren't complaining. We all put our children in cotton stuff out of school,so why poly/teflon for school? it is really shocking.anyway here www.eczemaclothing.com/ have some uniform trousers that may suit your son.

Ixia · 18/07/2010 00:40

My bugbear too. Fortunatley, I stocked up on Fairtrade cotton at Tesco's last year, so have enough pinis and skirts. But trousers....grrr. I also need grey with adjustable waists. I would even make them, but I can't even find suitable fabric.

Lint - kids has grey cotton stuff, but I found they washed really badly (faded lines all over, despite following washing instructions to the letter).

schooluniformshop.co.uk has fairtrade, pure cotton trousers. The waists aren't adjustable but they are quite narrow. Nice but they did go at the knees about halfway through the year. Boys can be very hard on clothes.

Have to admit that this year I am less precious because the polyester stuff lasts better and is fit to reuse/hand down, whereas the cotton t shirts/trousers are completely faded, board-stiff and fit only for the charity bag.

greenlotus · 18/07/2010 00:53

Forget that - they don't have them this year anyway

MardyPig · 18/07/2010 01:16

Schooluniformshop do have girls' grey cotton trousers, just not boys'.

I bought my ds1 the fairtrade cotton trousers from there last year. He loves them as he says they feel softer than his standard polyester ones, even though they are a lighter grey than everyone else's at school. Didn't go at the knees either. Sad to see they are not doing them this year.

They are still doing the fairtrade cotton poloshirts in white or pale blue - might help someone?

Octavia09 · 18/07/2010 10:08

The Tesco Fairtrade are in size 7-8 only Will have to go to M&S.
That is pretty bad that the trousers do not have adjustable waists. I probably will have to fit some elastic inside of the waist line; I have done this before but only to the joggers.

I am also very upset not to find natural school trousers. Knowing that children absorb more chemicals than the aduts the government still permits to manufacture school uniform with such high percentage of syntetics.

in state primaries, uniform isn't enforcable.

DS1 wears the polo shirt and sweatshirt, but I draw the line at those grotty grey/black polyester trousers.

he either wears navy cotton trousers from M and S (they have an adjustabe; waist) or whatever else is in his drawer.

Schools are so up themeselves about uniform.

gillybean2 · 18/07/2010 14:23

I got wool trousers in Debenhams for my ds a couple of years ago. Usually do get the M&S ones though.

UptoapointLordCopper · 18/07/2010 16:03

Year before last we got adjustable pure cotton trousers from John Lewis. Don't know if they still sell them but we are going to have a look.

sinclair · 18/07/2010 18:28

100% cotton cord trousers from Hennes - they come up skinny and long which is perfect for my little guy. usually available in grey or black but get in early - they go fast.

Do agree about having cotton next to the skin - they do wear at the knees, and i am unashamed to say I patch them and get another month or two out of them, it's only for school!

thisisyesterday · 18/07/2010 19:54

yeah we had the trutex ones last year from schooluniformshop
the knees did go halfway through the year, but i think any 100% cotton ones will tbh. I just patched them up!!!

i did also manage to get a grey pair of trousers in Next, and a pair of cargo-style ones from Asda which he has worn too. not ideal, but school didn't mention anything to me so i've used them anyway

Definitely buy now. M&S are already out of long sleeved cotton shirts.

I have stocked up on short sleeve for next year and trousers ready for september!!!

do Tesco have any smaller sizes? they do come up really big. I got the 5-6 for DS1 and they're a good couple of inches longer than any of his other 5-6 trousers

hellymelly · 18/07/2010 21:46

I have spent literally hours online trying to find something suitable for my daughter that isn't coated in chemicals and is a natural fibre.Don't know why companies like Boden don't do a small range of school basics as I've found their corduroy trousers pretty hardwearing on my girls.Thick cotton canvas trousers wouldn't go at the knees and would be comfortable for school.I also think I may have to make things or have them made.Which seems bonkers with all the choice of styles etc at John Lewis.I would like simple pinafore dresses to hide the lurid green of her uniform polo shirt, basic straight leg trousers (why this obsession with boot-cut for school uniforms?) and maybe pleated or A-line skirts.I can't find any of that. And I thought it would be so easy!

thisisyesterday · 18/07/2010 21:55

this one is 54% cotton, and no mention of StainDefence!!!

thisisyesterday · 18/07/2010 21:59

lint-kids has skirts, but not pinafores

hellymelly · 18/07/2010 22:08

thanks thisisyesterday.I saw that one,but the applique makes it a no-no.

Clary · 18/07/2010 23:22

M&S did a 100% summer dress this year (DD has it but of course prefers the 100% polyester zip one! )

I was delighted with cotton dress but hilariously (I thought) someone reviewed it complaining that because it was all cotton they had to iron it!!

Clary · 18/07/2010 23:22

oh, y'know, I meant 100% cotton summer dress doh

hellymelly · 19/07/2010 15:53

My dd has that dress,I really like it,although in the green, which she has,the colour is really strange, almost turquoise rather than a bottle green.Otherwise fine though, and it takes all of a minute to iron it.

Octavia09 · 20/07/2010 13:39

I have ordered online size 5 trousers and size 4 polo shirts at M&S and additional polo shirts at ASDA. Will let you know about the sizes in a few days. I have checked size 5-6 ASDA polo shirts and they look a bit too big for my son who is going to be 5 ina few months.
The school website sells almost everything made from polyester, even the t-shirts. Only the basic polo shirts which do not have the school logo are made from cotton (but cost more than at M&S or elsewhere) and that is why I have ordered the cotton ones from M&S and ASDA. The rest I will have to buy at schooluniform because of the logo. Fleece tops are ok for the cold weather.
ASDA also sells nice cotton tops with round or v-necks. Pure cotton for £2.00.
I need to buy PE shorts. M&S sells pure cotton ones but the comments show you need to try them before you buy because of the generous size.

GAP are worth a look - particularly in the sales. Their trousers have adjustable waists and seem to last well.

We always used to send ds to school in cotton trousers, but he would get through so many knees it was untrue. Other than the odd GAP pair, he wears cheap M&S polyester ones now.

DP picked up some good cotton shorts and polos for DS from Sainsbury's, too.

Octavia09 · 20/07/2010 16:41

I did not know GAP sells school uniforms. Have forgotten about Sainsburys!
