Where to buy non-polyester trousers for boys ?

I have noticed that many retailers sell boys trousers made from at least 65% polyester and the rest is from viscose or cotton. I am not being picky but I would love my boy to wear trousers having higher percentage of natural materials. Where do I buy them? He is going to be 5 this autumn. Many thanks!

i got my m&s trousers today. age 5-6 is um, well, they don't look that long!

i haven't tried them on ds1 yet though so will post again once i've tried them
stupidly i hadn't noticed they were only black, and he is supposed to wear grey. can't decide if to keep them just in case tho

thisisyesterday · 20/07/2010 20:01

gap don't do uniform, but they often have plain grey trousers in there

belly36 · 22/07/2010 12:09

Grey 100% cotton trousers from M&S here:

Belly36, I have checked the M&S Pure Cotton Straight Leg Drawstring Trousers but am not really sure they would be acceptable as a school uniform trousers ecause they look a bit casual.

I bought a pair of cotton trousers in GAP and they look good with adjustable waistline. They would suit more for the colder times because of the thick material, like jeans.
Once I get the M&S trousers I could tell you the pros and cons.

Belly 36, I think you meant the Autograph Pure Cotton Adjustable Waist Trousers
From £10.00 - £12.00. They are nice indeed. I would buy them for the formal occasions.

Yes, sorry meant the Autograph ones. I've bought DS two pairs. This means he can wear them for his first day at school.

Then I've also bought two pairs of the drawstring ones, because to be honest, it's reception, they'll do. The school just say grey or black trousers they don't say what type of trousers. I think our school is a bit lax on uniform judging by the kids I've seen.

good call belly! i had some similar to that last year actually and they were really nice, i hadn;t thought to check the non-uniform section! doh

hellymelly · 22/07/2010 23:42

Nothing for girls though sadly.

seeker · 22/07/2010 23:49

Don't worry - in a few years of patching and ironing and trying to get grass stains out you'll be chucking some Tesco plastic trousers in your trolley like the rest of us - I guarantee it!

belly36 · 23/07/2010 09:19

It's not the polyester as such that I don't like, it's the Teflon. Why? The school can't be dirtier than my house and we've managed without Teflon so far. If teflon is so great then why don't we have it for babygroes at the mashed banana stage?

Octavia09 · 23/07/2010 09:38

Trousers from Gap for £12.50 (not cheap though) are made from medium-hard cotton, looks like they could actually last; also the label says that the material is stain resistant. Hope it is true.
May be you Seeker could get a pair for the winter.

thisisyesterday - Thank you for the mention of the M&S pinafore, we've now got one and it's lovely Still on the hunt for trews though.

thisisyesterday · 23/07/2010 12:09

teflon is a known carcinogen.
i wouldn't wear clothes coated in it, i don;t use cooking utensils coated in it and i will NOT be putting my child in it

i will gladly take the washing and sewing thank you very much.
my child's welfare comes above my own convenience

Octavia09 · 23/07/2010 15:49

I have got the M&S trousers and they are lovely with adjustable waist, 100% cotton. The material is not thin so hopefully it will last. It does not say it is stain resistant as the GAP ones. I have used 2 for 3 offer, got trousers and a pack of t-shirts. The PE shorts are also from cotton but they look like a skirt. I did not buy them

Have forgotten to mention that M&S cotton trousers are the pull-one ones; the adjustable waist helps.

Many thanks to everyone in here ;)

Are these the trousers? I wouldn't get away with them as they seem to have a pattern.

These look promising, wonder if I'd get away with them on a girl?

Ixia · 25/07/2010 22:37

Also these....

Octavia09 · 25/07/2010 22:38

These are the one I got but somehow they are pull-ons. I think I will need to check it with M&S customer service. May be they have two types of these trousers or may be the pull-ons are for the very young boys. I would rather have a front with zip and adjustable waist.

marking spot for future reference

ds (12) has just finished a term in polyester since our John Lewis stopped doing the cotton mix

and eeeeeeurgh! the smell

I do so loathe schooliforms- on just about every level!

Ixia · 25/07/2010 22:53

Ah, thanks Octavia, they're black, we need grey. M&S actually do lovely cotton girls school trousers, but only in black (why?!)

seeker · 26/07/2010 07:21

Teflon, if eaten, has been tentatively linked to some forms of cancer.

Not sure how this makes trousers treated with stain guard carcinogenic. Lots of things are poisonous if you eat them but not if you don't.

dikkertjedap · 26/07/2010 18:17

I know this might sound as a hassle, but I couldn't find any grey school trousers a few months ago and in the end ending up making them myself. Just with elastic band, no pockets, zip etc and it actually was very easy. So, for September I will start making a few more in the next few weeks, really, if you have a sewing machine it is not as difficult as you may think.

belly36 · 26/07/2010 18:35

My grey cotton M&S trousers arrive tommorrow so I'll let you know what they're like.

thisisyesterday · 26/07/2010 18:41

well seeker, when you can show me proof that teflon rubbing against a child's skin for 7 hours a day is fine then maybe i'll do it

personally i am willing and able to wash and iron my child's clothes
i have no reason to need them stain-proof and made of polyester

Ixia · 26/07/2010 20:45

dikkertjedap - What fabric did you use and where did you buy it? I'm more than able to run up a pair of trousers, but have drawn a blank on cotton medium grey fabric that isn't sweatshirting.
