Where to buy clothes that fit DD

DD is 10 and has started puberty. She's always been quite solidly built but at the moment she's definitely got more weight on her stomach than usual and started to develop breasts. Her eating and exercise habits haven't really changed, she's an active girl with a healthy appetite as most girls her age are, so I'm assuming it's just the stage she's at with growing up.

Anyway, she needs new clothes. Nothing with buttons and zips on the lower half are closing and her tops are getting quite clingy even though leg/arm length are ok. I'm very conscious not to make her too aware of it, she's a fairly confident child and I hope it remains that way.

Other than joggers and leggings, what other types of clothes might fit and be flattering? Is there anywhere that does wider fit trousers (other than school clothes?). She doesn't like anything too fussy or bold, although does like to look good and makes an effort with her clothes choices/hair etc.

Also - everything seems to be cropped!!

What are her actual measurements? Larger teen sizes in Next are the same as smaller womens sizes. If she's bigger than that then the petite adult section and get her the larger sizes but she really shouldn't be creeping into those.

DD was very tall and is a rugby player so has the thighs to Match so skinny jeans are out. Bottoms wise boot leg, wide leg or flared jeans, cargo pants.

At 10 it was all jeans and Qwertee t-shirts - watch out for shipping as that can add up.

Newbie887 · 30/09/2024 21:25

Zara kids girls t shirts are often cut very relaxed and boxy which looks fashionable and is flattering. Oversize hoodies (bought a couple of sizes too big and rolled at the wrists) and leggings also might be a good combo, if she likes that kind of sloppy casual look :)

sleepfortheweek · 30/09/2024 21:37

Thanks - yes she loves oversized hoodies and has some leggings but it's something a bit more smart I'm struggling with!

Hadn't thought on Zara though - will go check them out 😊

Jersey trousers from M&S DD wore them throughout school up to (size) age 14.

They do the same trousers but in a range of cuts and colours in women's sizes for around £17. They are basically smart trackies but don't look like trackies.

Alternatively a dress over the leggings and ankle boots. Dresses always smarten things up and are comfortable.

NowImNotDoingIt · 30/09/2024 22:01

What size is she actually?

sleepfortheweek · 30/09/2024 22:23

@NowImNotDoingIt what do you mean? Height? She's about 140cm

Is she not in age 10 clothes? That's what previous poster means. So 11-12? Or 14-15? Etc

Next springs to mind. M & S also

My daughters just 10 and we have started to shop in New look, Zara, H&M and M&S with the odd Next thing as I’m not as keen on their stuff as she’s got older. Got some lovely wide leg cargo trousers that she wears from H&M that are elasticated waist. She wears with an oversized T-shirt as that’s a look her and her friends seem to like. There’s a lot of knitted type trousers out at the moment that would work for comfort. And more dressy jogger type trousers in these places too. Mango girls also have some lovely jumper dresses in at the moment which would work with leggings.

sleepfortheweek · 01/10/2024 07:29

Oh sorry - she's in age 10-11 or even which fits the leg/sleeve length lovely but just tight around the middle.

From my browsing it seems that baggy, jogger type styles seems to be the style at the moment. Zara has got some nice outfits - I'd like to get her some jeans though and just worried they'll not fasten and she'll get an unnecessary clothes?

Try boy's jeans, they have a larger waist to hip ratio and may even be a little loose on the waist. Even from teen years, I am straight of waist - hip - thigh and that gives a bit more room around the tummy. Try Uniqlo too.

mitogoshigg · 01/10/2024 07:55

Supermarket kids clothes come up very generous in the waist department, Asda especially

Quietobserver · 01/10/2024 08:03

If you look on H&M kids ‘trousers’ they have loads of jeans with elasticated waist no buttons.

Quietobserver · 01/10/2024 08:06

Plus cargo trousers, flared leggings, joggers. Some great options for comfort!

Singleandproud · 01/10/2024 08:09

Why would she get unnecessary clothes 1) you can take them back and 2) just measure her waist first and compare to the size chart online to make sure they'll fit.

Sorry if someone else has said and ive missed but Zara clothes come up small around waists so just be careful with sizing not to cause any upset. Speaking from experience xx

Quietobserver · 01/10/2024 08:15

Also some wide leg jeans we recently got from M&S have those side buttons inside the waist that pull them in, so are quite big to start with which might work.

Button28384738 · 01/10/2024 09:22

My 9.5 yo DD is the opposite- tall but slim.
I can't buy her clothes from Asda because they are generous around the waist so they would be good to try, also Next we have struggled with unless it's leggings

My DD tends to live in leggings, joggers, loose t shirts and hoodies, as do most of her friends so that kind of style is quite flattering.
Looser tunic dresses or sweatshirt dresses with leggings maybe?

Gollumm · 01/10/2024 09:30

Just go up a size in whatever she's wearing now? Needing a size up from her age isn't abnormal, you sound as if she's massive. Be careful what you say to her about her fitting in clothes as you could cause a complex. She sounds perfectly normal.

Therealmetherealme · 01/10/2024 09:44

At age 10 my daughter was starting to wear bigger sizes, age12/13 and bigger, purely to fit her shape. M&S is quite good. She was soon into women's sizes, it was easier for trousers because of the choice of length.

Anoisagusaris · 01/10/2024 09:47

Just buy a size up? Do you really think that all 10 year olds wear age 10? Some could be in 8-9 and others 13-14. Kids aren’t all the same height and size!

Agree in general Zara clothes come up small, however they seem to cut a lot of their tops in a boxy / oversize fit at the moment (I guess it’s a cut that’s in style) so they kind of swing about and are flattering. My daughter is the same shape as op’s and they look great on her!

That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid 🙈. Haven't said anything to her. The size up tends to be far too long on the leg and sleeves

She's average height for her age

She's not massive at all - I didn't mean that - but around the waist her clothes aren't fitting. The problem with going up an age is that they are far too long. I can't take things up very well and because of my location there's no one nearby I can ask
