Where to buy clothes that fit DD

DD is 10 and has started puberty. She's always been quite solidly built but at the moment she's definitely got more weight on her stomach than usual and started to develop breasts. Her eating and exercise habits haven't really changed, she's an active girl with a healthy appetite as most girls her age are, so I'm assuming it's just the stage she's at with growing up.

Anyway, she needs new clothes. Nothing with buttons and zips on the lower half are closing and her tops are getting quite clingy even though leg/arm length are ok. I'm very conscious not to make her too aware of it, she's a fairly confident child and I hope it remains that way.

Other than joggers and leggings, what other types of clothes might fit and be flattering? Is there anywhere that does wider fit trousers (other than school clothes?). She doesn't like anything too fussy or bold, although does like to look good and makes an effort with her clothes choices/hair etc.

@Anoisagusaris absolutely this, DD was out of her age range from the 3 months and was in adult clothes by 10 years old, admittedly she was 5 ft 10 by 11 years. The idea that clothes have to match age is a bit alien to me.

Having longer arms and legs in things is really not an issue because she'll have a growth spurt soon and shoot up and you'll have to buy more any how.

The simplest option is to look at the teen ranges, and dresses or elasticated waisted trousers for now. Dresses with leggings because when she shoots up she can still wear them whereas trousers she's likely to go through several sizes

If her waist is much bigger than it ought to be though, and its more than just pre-growth spurt puppy fat you may want to get some medical advice, up the activity and reassess carb portions a little Particularly if she is allowed to the shops on her own or anything like that where she could be buying junk.

I swapped to some womens clothes but petite size for my youngest when she had a growth spurt- for the basics; trousers/top etc. It took into account her bust/hips. When she 'even'd out' (if you know what I mean), we went back to kids. I didn't actually tell her, I just said 'oh, how about we try these, these are a bit more grown up'

Edited

Thank you for your advice. She's always just been a bit bigger - even as a baby. She's extremely active, 3 hrs+ football training a week as well as 2hrs+ taekwondo, bike rides and swimming.

She has such a great relationship with food - tries anything and everything - and has a very mature palpate. She loves cooking and trying new things.

She does get crisps/sweets on occasion but no more than an average child I wouldn't say.

Thanks everyone - that's really helped me look for things.

We live very rurally so have to rely on online shopping so it's hard to know how things will fit.

She's certainly not unhealthily overweight, but I can tell her body is going through changes and I want to make her feel comfortable.

Thanks again ☺️

My daughter is almost 13 but seems to grow out the way before up the way if that makes sense. We've found that H&M do jeggings but not just in the normal 'skinny' style. She has some bootcut and a couple of wide leg pairs. They're a decent thick material as well but stretchy and no buttons/zips.

For tops, she now wears t shirts and hoodies from the adult section in primark. Hoodies especially she wears xxs but in t shirts a small is perfect.

Hope this helps.

I was shopping with my 11yo at the weekend, and New Look 9-15 range had loads of wide leg combats, jeans and jersey trousers in

That seems to be the style which probably works in our favour!

Ideally we would be able to go shopping together and have a look but being 3 hours away from any city has its disadvantages 🤣

For smart - a dress. Rest of time joggers.

PenguinLove1 · 01/10/2024 17:50

Definitely look at zara - they do elasticated waist jeans, and ive also seen pull on flare trousers that look like jeans but have a stretch waistband, and they also have nice coloured formal trousers that are drawstring waist. Have you tried her in jeggings?

A Jumper dress with leggings/tights is also a good idea and will be comfortable for her.

Our DD is 10 and 5 foot six. She's in women's clothes 14/26 depending on fit and style. She's a big girl but not over weight . Besides ,with dad over six foot and a mum over 5 foot eight he was never going to be in kids clothes for long.

NowImNotDoingIt · 01/10/2024 20:19

H&m, New Look , primark. Possibly go a size up. If you can do easy return, just order a mix. Try women's small sizes too.

Luckily the "in" look is very comfy. Leggings and oversized hoodies, cargos, slouchy jeans , tracksuit bottoms and there's a bit of trend for sporty/jersey type t-shirts.

Tbh I have found Zara to come up on the smaller side. So definitely size up.

If you want smarter, go for some dresses , jumper/sweater style or A line , t shirt dresses etc. With leggings or tights.
Or possibly cargo skirt , jumper and tights.

Ideally you could take her shopping in an actual store so she can browse the styles and also try things on and see where she lands, what fits, what's comfortable and then go with that in the future.

Crop tops should be fine either in a size bigger, or in her size but with well fitting bottoms.

HippyKayYay · 01/10/2024 20:25

I’m pissed off on your behalf OP at the PPs implying your DD is ‘too big’. Girls this age develop at such different rates and their bodies change hugely pre- and early puberty.

I had this exact issue with DD (11) a few months ago. After a very demoralising shopping trip to H&M with her skinny friend, where nothing fit her, we had a lot of success with Next stuff. I went up a couple of sizes (she’s also tall).

Yes - it was an extremely helpful comment - especially knowing nothing about our my DD 🤣.

Thank you ☺️

Yes she does like a crop top - I think they'll all sit a bit better with better fitting bottoms
