What do you allow a DD to do

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 15/08/2024 16:56

My DD is a proper girlie girl.

She likes fake tan and lashes ( so many bloody lashes)
I find bastard lashes everywhere. Black glue all the over her units.
Anyway she won't go anywhere without her bloody lashes on. We've been away and they were on for the beach & pool ffs.
I've asked her to reduce the amount of time she wears them and got a load of tears (no tantrum) is this normal for girls now.
I've never been a make up type person so I wonder if I'm just not with it.
I'm worried about her eyes but she says they're fine. I've tried explaining I wouldn't let her eat sweets every day to protect her teeth so I'm just trying to protect her eyes

You say pre teen- how old is she?

Positivenancy · 15/08/2024 17:02

What age is she exactly?

wtfactually · 15/08/2024 17:05

Seems to be the norm. Can thank celebrities, social media and peer pressure for this.

What about the magnetic strip eyelashes ? Apparently they are amazing. Can get them in lots of places like Amazon or Superdrug

urbanbuddha · 15/08/2024 17:10

I wouldn’t be okay with false lashes on a pre-teen. Or fake tan tbh.
Read ‘The Beauty Myth’ by Naomi Wolf, distill the main points and discuss them with her, and try and shift her interest in how she looks onto fashion - not girly looks, fashion.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/08/2024 17:20

Is this a real post? A pre-teen girl won't go anywhere, including the pool on holiday, without fake lashes on?

Dressinggowntime · 15/08/2024 17:21

I’m lucky if my pre teen washes her face. How old is she exactly?

redskydarknight · 15/08/2024 17:23

how old? If she's 12 (11 at a pinch) and you pay for the lashes, then stop, give her an allowance, and see if she is still so keen.

Any younger and it would just be a firm "no".

Same 😆

balzamico · 15/08/2024 17:24

If she's a pre teen how is she buying them? Way too young

Ozanj · 15/08/2024 17:27

Just make her responsible for the clean up & if you see glue/streaks then you confiscate or stop funding items?

Anonym00se · 15/08/2024 17:30

Where does it say she’s a pre-teen?

SD1978 · 15/08/2024 17:35

What age is she? I have a 12 yr old I still have to remind to wash her face everyday. If she's that sucked in to the whole fashion thing, where is it coming from?

loropianalover · 15/08/2024 17:35

It doesn’t sound like you’re worried about her eyes though, it just sounds like you don’t approve of the lashes or the way they look. I’m sure she’s already picked up on this through previous comments, so the tears are from frustration because she knows you just don’t like them and are making up an excuse.

I think lashes are harmless, better than her having a heavy beat!

RandomUsernameHere · 15/08/2024 17:35

I think people are saying pre-teen because this is in the pre-teens section

SD1978 · 15/08/2024 17:36

@Anonym00se- the assumption is that she is due to the topic this is posted in- although that could be an error on OP's part, as it's under the preteen heading

Bobbotgegrinch · 15/08/2024 18:07

Not a chance I'd let a pre teen wear fake tan or lashes at all. And I'd be taking a very close look at the media she's watching and people she's associating with who are encouraging this sort of thing.

Guavafish1 · 15/08/2024 18:11

All teens go through phases… she grow out of it. Be kind and patient, they very sensitive to criticism

liveforsummer · 15/08/2024 18:15

If she is actually a pre teen then no, not really normal. 15 then more normal!

thursdaymurderclub · 15/08/2024 18:15

By pre-teen do you mean she is 12? or is she younger than that? Lashes are expensive so where is she getting the money from? I don't know that much about lashes to know what harm will become of your DD's eyes? But i have had 2 pre-teen girls. One wasn't bothered about make-up and the other was doing make-up well at the age of 12! Both are now fully grown adults and have not suffered in anyway shape or form from any of their many beauty treatments over the years.

Notamum12345577 · 15/08/2024 18:17

I wouldn’t say it is normal for a pre teen no. Though are you from Essex?! 😁

justasoul · 15/08/2024 18:19

DD really liked fake lashes when she was about 12, but she used to wear the magnetic type. She has never been a heavy makeup type but would wear a little bit for school. She’s 15 now and much prefer sleeping the extra 15 minutes to wearing makeup Grin though she will put on a bit of eyeliner and lip gloss sometimes. What I mean is - sometimes it’s just a phase.

mm81736 · 15/08/2024 18:26

You are joking- fake lashes and tan on a preteen?
No way! What are you thinking?

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 15/08/2024 21:33

She's a year 8 pushing 13. (15 in her head?
Lots of her age group in school are lashed up with badly applied tan. She also has lots of friends in the tear above so wants to get like them
The lashes look beautiful on her and her make up is done brilliantly. My biggest concern is about her eyes and any lasting damage.

She buys the individual ones which are cheap online with her own money.

She's otherwise very easy to deal with for her age so I'm wondering should this be my hill to die on or will it pass like other stuff.
I was her age in the 80's so my sense of style isn't very cool.

I don't want to have a row about it if they are harmless. Pick your battles is my motto.

8 ffs?

I hope you're making this up, because otherwise the poor girl is being subject to some really shit parenting.

Comefromaway · 15/08/2024 21:41

Year 8 not age 8.
