Please can anyone advice..
My daughter is 11 and half. Always saying to be excited to be Preteen🙄
Anyway..
On the 5th of December she came back from school saying she felt sick most of the day, like her tummy hurt.
She started lighly bleeding, explained her everything about periods. Used the liliets teen pads
She was a bit shocked but got ok.
No more pain and this light bleed went on for about 8 -10days on and off and then stopped. It was a light bleeding, 2-3 pads were enough per a whole day.
Fast forward to this Monday 19th of December and she started bleeding again, this time more heavily seems like normal adult period, no pain though.
Now - today on day 4 she came down running & crying that it’s too much blood and crying that she hates it and doesn’t want to be pre teen anymore.
Her underwear is all covered in blood.
Is this normal to bleed like this even she bled for first time on the 5th for more than week?
When I think of my own start of period, I remember it came sort of regularly the first months, definitely not a twice like she has..

Thanks everyone.
Yes she still having a very heavy bleeds, literally has to change her pad every 2 hrs as its soaked through.
I gave her some gentle iron liquid, don't want her became anemic.
Also spoke to MIL, who said she herself suffered extremely heavy periods since age 11, fainting every day for years, perhaps its hereditary? Is it even possible?
My own periods were ok, very normal and regular..

Did you try the ibruprofen? It can limit the amount of bleeding and the days?

Lovesnowforever · 27/12/2022 16:33

@PritiPatelsMaker yes, I was giving her ibuprofen 3x daily as she had cramps.
It made no difference jn bleeding, so I switched to Calpol.
In Sunday afternoon it seemed it got lighter and we thought it well eases as she only needed changed her pad 3x per day, however today it starts picking up again.
I bought some herbal tea to regulate periods, it says suitable for teens too, so will see it that makes any difference.

You can give Ibruprofen to ease the bleeding and paracetamol for the pain, if she needs both. Just give them 2 hours apart.

My daughter was wildly irregular for the first 20 months. Cycles were anything from 14-50 days. However the last seven cycles have all been 21-29 days so hopefully they're starting to regulate. She's nearly 13.

mamnotmum · 15/03/2023 06:36

Yeh similar for my 12 (now 13) year old.

Started August and then had one 2 weeks later then 7 weeks after that then 5 weeks later then 3 weeks later. Basically just very random. Some light and others very heavy.

Such a nightmare for them when they are young.

Mumma · 15/03/2023 07:00

The best thing i did for my DD was purchase modibody pants. No need for pads and you just wash them out and dry them. It was a revelation! Tjey are expensive but shes had tjem over 3 years and they are still going strong!

timetorefresh · 15/03/2023 11:11

My DD is now on the pill as she was bleeding for weeks with a few days gap in between. I was reluctant but she needs a break!

CC1991 · 26/03/2023 15:41

Seems like I was fairly unusual as my periods were like clockwork every 4 weeks from the start with very few exceptions! However, what did happen to me during the first year was that a period would sometimes stop for a couple of days before a final 1 or 2 days of light bleeding.

Lovesnowforever · 27/03/2023 21:10

Update.
So her periods are now more normal ( ish)
She had two since Xmas and both were fairly normal, lightish and lasted a normal time about 5-6 days.
Hope it is correcting itself..

Update again.
so now it’s almost 6 months since her periods started.
It’s still very irregular really.
She just turned 12 yrs two weeks ago and like she will bleed lightly for 2 weeks, stops for a week, starts spotting again only in 2-3 weeks come back extremely heavy.
This weekend it came back, very heavy, bleed through clothes, even Modibodi period pants, literally her pads are soaked in 30mins.

Lovesnowforever · 21/05/2023 12:58

She Had a shower in the morning, was finished and about to leave to cubicle, blood started dripping everywhere, could not leave the cubicle as it was just like a tap on. she had to literally put pants/ pad in there still wet otherwise would be stuck there until now. Anyone has it like that?
My own periods were absolutely nothing like this, I didn’t even bleed like this after giving a birth..hence I’m a bit shocked ..

I would visit GP to check her iron levels, and ask for possible prescription for something like mefenamic acid which helps reduce flow (but always take it with food as it can cause stomach pain otherwise). Ibuprofen also helps reduce flow and manage pain.

Lovesnowforever · 21/05/2023 13:09

Thank you.
@myveryownelectrickitten I was hoping for something natural for her to regulate it, but I am worried about the her iron levels, though she seems ok, not tired, but naturally she is very slim.

OP posts:
Lovesnowforever · 21/05/2023 13:31

She is actually a bit underweight for her age, should weight about stone more, so I guess being like that has a big effect on it too.
But she does eats ok, just being very slim naturally..

Hi, how is your daughter now? I know this thread is over a year old.. but just wanted to check in to see if you found a solution? My daughter is 11, she started her periods last summer when she was just 10, they seem to come every 2 or 3 weeks and are very heavy too.. I didn’t suffer at her age at all and was able to go to school and carry on with all sporting activities… only in peri did I start flooding.. so I know how this must make our poor girls feel as it can be quite scary seeing that amount of blood. I have spoken to my dr who has prescribed tranxemic acid and a progesterone only pill.. they have helped a little bit but I still worry about her at school trying to manage the flow alone.. it’s a lot for them to deal with isn’t it? Some mornings I’ve been shocked at how much blood my daughter has lost.. and she seems to have a heavy period for the full 7 days.. doesn’t seem to taper after day 3. I’m trying not to push my anxiety about it on to her as periods are obviously a normal part of a woman’s life and some do suffer with heavy flow.. my mum and aunt did too… but I’m genuinely concerned about her iron levels too.. this last year of primary has been awful in summer dresses.. I’d have to let her have time off school as I couldn’t bear the idea of her leaking and with a classroom of young kids who hadn’t started their periods and boys who wouldn’t undoubtedly be shocked at the age of 10..
my dr had said she can go on the pill if need be, but obviously she has to go to the surgery to chat about it too.. she typically 11 and doesn’t like talking about it, especially to strangers. I absolutely refuse to let her be ‘investigated’ in anyway whether that be a blood test or examination.. its all to invasive as such a young age.. but I’m reluctant to put her on the pill so young… it’s such a hard thing to navigate as a mum isn’t it? I’m hoping with maturity her body will settle down and she’ll manage them better.. but it’s been a year already and with secondary starting next week I’ve got to do something as don’t want her to miss out on life because of bleeding..

36and3 · 27/08/2024 10:48

@Kelwar you say you don't want her to be investigated, but she may have the beginnings of endometriosis or a hormonal imbalance which she could receive help for if you let her be tested. I'd ask for a referral to paediatric endocrinology to get her hormone levels properly evaluated.

She’s really shy anyway.. I hear what you’re saying, but I’m just concerned that she’ll never forget or be traumatised in some way being made to have a blood test or they start wanting to do scans etc.. she’s only 11 and I think because of her personality it could be quite damaging/traumatic..
I m in contact with our gp about it and I think they’ll try medications first before we go down the route of invasive testing.. if she was 16/17 it wouldn’t seem so bad .. but she just seems a little too young at the moment..

36and3 · 27/08/2024 11:03

@Kelwar both my girls have had pelvic scans (called that but it's actually on the tummy only) and blood tests for similar reasons. One from age 8 and one from age 9. You can tell her the blood test is a generic mot you don't need to be specific. Personally if they're as heavy as you describe I'd want to know a cause.

I wouldn’t mind a pelvic scan.. that’s not so
intrusive. I definitely want to know what the cause is but I’m aware that pre teens can have erratics heavy periods until their bodies are developed and their hormones settle .. I wouldn’t want to needlessly put her through anything that might just be part of starting periods at a very young age. Did they find anything with your daughters? They were very young bless them.. I guess kids are more developed these days.. although most of my daughters friends haven’t started yet which makes it harder for her.. be much better when she has a few friends in the same boat.. when I was at secondary we’d all get each other to check the back of our skirts for leaking.. makes life easier having kindred spirits!

36and3 · 27/08/2024 11:47

My girls didn't start their periods that age no, but they did begin puberty at 8/9 hence investigations. My eldest ended up starting at 10y8m and my second dd is currently 10y4m and hasn't started yet but the scans and blood tests eliminated concerning causes for early puberty.

That’s good news.. my daughter was 10y2months when she started.. she was playing in the park with her friends.. she seemed so young.. it is young.. glad your girls are all good..

Neither do I.. it scares me the repercussions of having hormones while her body is still developing.. I’ll wait and see how the next couple of years go..they might settle down over time.. mine were fine as a teen.. so hoping hers will be too. Our girls are starting so young .. when my daughter started her periods she was still so mentally young, seemed to weird to me that her body could have babies and yet she was still my baby.. anyway.. she’s getting better at dealing with her heavy periods and they don’t seem to phase her too much which is the main thing

Vetti2324 · 24/08/2025 22:32

My daughter got her just shy of her 11th bday. Very heavy straight away, lasted 7 days. Then a week later it returned and is still going, we are on day 8.
Im thinking of speaking to a doctor, but I have a feeling they’ll just say it’s her body working it out. She’s fine though, happy, active and a little moody 😂
