10 year old ok to wax legs?

My DD (10) has seriously hairy legs (and arms) which are very dark.
She is really really conscious of it and is getting teased at school. She won’t even wear skirts, dresses or shorts because of it 😞.
She has asked me if she can start shaving which I am obviously dead set against but do you think it is ok for me to wax them for her?
I didn’t start shaving till about 14 but it’s because I didn’t care and I was a lot lighter colouring than she is.
She’s at the end of year 5 so at an age where she’s starting to really think about her body etc.

@CommanderBurnham

Electric shaver until you can get her lasered
I hope you meant to write "until she is both old enough for laser hair removal treatment and to make an informed decision that this is what she wants to do". No one should be "getting" anyone else "lasered".

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

Nope, not insane. After you have waxed for quite a while the waxing becomes less painful. Then you can move on to epilating without it hurting too much more.

Also, different areas of body hurt more. My lower legs are fine but upper still hurts but for my Mum, it's the other way round 🤷. The convenience makes it worth it though. So it's worth OP giving her DD all the options, even if epilating is something for the future.

Get her an epilator, OP. Not am electric shaver as that is the same as shaving, the hair will grow back prickly.

Wax it the first time for her, then epilate when it grows back. Epilating removes the hair from the root, so it's very soft when it grows back and eventually it grows back less. You don't need to wait until it's waxing length before you can epilate again, and after a bit it's not even painful.

An epilator is the way to go. Trust me.

I ended up with folliculitis from using an epilator. Hurts like fuck, I'd be very impressed/ surprised if a ten year old was ok with that level of pain.

AnonAnom940 · 28/06/2021 23:19

The folliculitis could have occurred after any method of hair removal really.

I started using an epilator age 13.

How much pain you're willing to put up with is individual. And also if you've waxed first and then maintain it with epilator it really isn't as bad.
Did you wax for a while before epilating? And on really short hair is better

CommanderBurnham · 29/06/2021 21:21

@UserAtRandom obviously.

The OP, I'm sure, doesn't need it making explicitly clear. That would be patronising

I started shaving my legs when I was eleven. I think that is the best way, frankly.

I started getting DD's legs waxed when she started secondary school, so about 11. I didn't want it to be something that she could be teased about.

Waxing because I never got on with shaving. Slashed my ankles and knees too often. I've still got a couple of scars.

Between waxes there is regrowth but it is softer and looks like you have naturally not very hairy legs!

How did your daughter cope with the pain at age 11. ?

whiteroseredrose · 28/06/2024 19:14

@Wiggleroomm she was actually fine.

BreakingtheIce · 28/06/2024 19:53

Which epilator would people recommend? I have always had my legs waxed since early twenties .
