10 year old ok to wax legs?

Troisfoisfilles · 11/06/2021 19:21

My DD (10) has seriously hairy legs (and arms) which are very dark.
She is really really conscious of it and is getting teased at school. She won’t even wear skirts, dresses or shorts because of it 😞.
She has asked me if she can start shaving which I am obviously dead set against but do you think it is ok for me to wax them for her?
I didn’t start shaving till about 14 but it’s because I didn’t care and I was a lot lighter colouring than she is.
She’s at the end of year 5 so at an age where she’s starting to really think about her body etc.

I started getting DD's legs waxed when she started secondary school, so about 11. I didn't want it to be something that she could be teased about.

Waxing because I never got on with shaving. Slashed my ankles and knees too often. I've still got a couple of scars.

Between waxes there is regrowth but it is softer and looks like you have naturally not very hairy legs!

InnaBun · 11/06/2021 21:30

Electric razor or Veet if you are worried about her using a normal razor. Waxing might be a bit much on her skin at that age and also hurt!

pickingdaisies · 11/06/2021 21:32

Hair that hasn't been cut will have faded slightly, so new hair growing through is bound to look a little darker. That's just its natural colour.

Whysolong7 · 11/06/2021 21:33

Stunned that a beauty professional would advocate waxing for a ten year old - Jeez 🙄

legotruck · 11/06/2021 21:33

I'm not sure why think it is obvious you are 'dead set' against shaving, particularly when you are considering wax.

You are either ok with hair removal or not.

@LipstickLou

Too tired to read the whole thread, sorry. But beauty industry professional here. Waxing best. Not painful, she will enjoy the time too if she can have a basic Mani at the same time. No shame in hair, it's just not comfortable in the heat.
The reason I don't wax (but shave) is because it hurt. A lot. So "not painful" isn't always true.
osbertthesyrianhamster · 11/06/2021 21:37

I'd get her an electric shaver.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 11/06/2021 21:46

I sympathise with her

I do think you need to have a conversation about what body hair being normal and showing her photos of other females that have body hair - there are some influencer who promote choice

If she wants to remove it I would either go for sugaring over waxing or an electric shaver if you are worried about blades (I’m 42 and still cut myself!)

hellywelly3 · 11/06/2021 21:50

I took my DD to be waxed from 11, it was her decision to remove her hair. I suggested waxing as I didn’t want her cutting herself whilst shaving with her being young. She didn’t even flinch getting them done and has been going ever since she’s 13 now. Not everywhere does it for young ones so you may have to try a few saloons

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 11/06/2021 21:50

On what planet is leg waxing not painful?! Sorry, but it is painful.

hellywelly3 · 11/06/2021 21:51

I shave my own as I find waxing too painful but she really doesn’t

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 11/06/2021 21:53

I also have thick dark hair and my mum was a pain about my shaving my legs as a child. Felt I was too young at 10/11 but I was teased at gym time. Eventually she let me Immac them. I think it’s a decent compromise.

Please don’t bleach the hair you might as well paint it yellow. #bitterexperience

PickAChew · 11/06/2021 22:03

@nc8765

Lots of posters on here have no idea why shaving darl hairy legs is a bad idea... the dark hairs will become thick and darker and eventually as soon as she shaves, she'll get stubble Regrowth by 5pm!

Waxing is a far better alternative.

My mum started letting me wax my legs around 12, but I see no issues for a 10yr old.

I have dark hair. It doesn't get thicker when you shave it. That's a myth. I hated the regrowth period before I could wax again because it grows back just as thick and dark after waxing as after shaving.

Thank goodness for lumea and middle age.

Troisfoisfilles · 11/06/2021 22:13

Thanks to those who have made suggestions of the electric shaver- to me that actually makes sense and I stupidly hadn’t been thought of it!

And to those that asked why I was against shaving.... ever since I first shaved my legs at 14, I have had to shave them EVERY SINGLE OTHER DAMN DAY ever since!
I can literally feel stubble the next day. I hate it so much. I want my daughter to hold off from shaving as long as she possibly can as I’m worried she’ll be the same. I’m not sure if an electric shaver will make any difference to this, but as a lot of people on here have suggested that waxing is not suitable and would be painful, I’m willing to give it a go.
And to those that feel it’s ok to answer in such a rude way, get some manners. In what world do you think it is ok to be so nasty to someone just asking for some advice. If you don’t have anything constructive or pleasant to say, don’t say anything. I didn’t ask you to read this post and/or reply to it!

If you can afford to get her a lumea then go for it. I love mine...... Im also very dark and hairy and it's no fun when youre a child and just want to fit in.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 11/06/2021 22:23

I think Veet (immac) would be ideal. It's a hair removal cream and lasts longer than shaving. They do spray or cream I think.

NerrSnerr · 11/06/2021 22:31

@Troisfoisfilles give her information with all the age appropriate options (I don't know enough about waxing to know if it's ok for young skin but I do know it bloody hurts) and let her choose. Just because she shaves at 10 doesn't mean she can't wax, epilate or doing anything else when older.

She should choose how she does it as it is her body.

Emsmaman · 11/06/2021 22:32

I've used veet sensitive on my 10 year old a couple of times ( v dark hairs). We tried waxing to avoid the chemicals but the pain was unbearable for her. Now she knows the veet is an option she is more relaxed but hasn't actually wanted to do it for a couple of months, it takes a bit of time and leaves a smell so she is happier to live with her legs as they are.

BreakingtheIce · 11/06/2021 22:41

I shaved my legs for years then switched to waxing. The hairs for much finer and sparser over time with waxing. Shaving will give stubble quite quickly and ingrown hairs . Waxing is expensive and the regrowth period unsightly. She’d have to get it done professionally and it’s painful.
I would buy her an electric razor and when she’s older she can use a Lumea.

goddessofmischief · 11/06/2021 23:03

I would try shaving them for her and teaching her as you go. Waxing would be a painful start to hair removal. She might not necessarily have to shave as frequently as you. My DD is starting to become self conscious at a similar age with quite dark hair, hoping we can hold off for a bit.

Iggi999 · 11/06/2021 23:07

ever since I first shaved my legs at 14, I have had to shave them EVERY SINGLE OTHER DAMN DAY ever since!
No you really, really haven't. You made a choice to do so.

Remaker · 11/06/2021 23:13

There’s absolutely no reason she can’t start using one method and then change to another later on.

I shaved when in my teens ( cheap, painless, private, don’t need an appointment so you can do it at the last minute if you get invited for a swim). In my 20s I changed to waxing but I hated the regrowth and I got terrible ingrown hairs so then I went back to shaving again.

I’ve never found electric shavers to be as good as a razor and shaving foam but I haven’t tried one for a long time so maybe they’ve improved.

housework1977 · 12/06/2021 07:18

If you don't mind me saying, most people don't know how to shave which is why it is seen as not as good as waxing. Done well the regrow should be the same. If you experience painful regrow you should shave with multiple five blades and replace after several shaves. Shave in direction of hair and NOT against it and use a soothing shaving oil on skin when shaving. Always do after a bath when pores are open. Stand up in bath and finish your legs there. Never use scented cream straight after. I have only learnt all of this after many many years of shaving wjth dry old blades. I now shave my bikini line and it's less itchy than waxing. I don't get any spots or ingrown hairs like I did wjth wax as well... I would give her the control of shaving. Teach her first.

housework1977 · 12/06/2021 07:30

This has been a total life changer. Bought in France but you can get on Amazon. As well as replacement blades. Better than any Gillette razor I've ever had. And electric waterproof bikini trimmer in other end. Absolutely brilliant.

Epilator all the benefits of waxing but you don't have to wait for the regrowth. I do my legs fortnightly at most. Also do my armpits which lasts a solid month or two but that stings legs don't.
