Help 10 DD started period

Evening. I'm looking for a bit of advice please. My 10 year old daughter (11 next month) began her first period this morning. She was a bit teary over it and quite worried but I've been fussing over her a lot today. I've helped her change her pads today and have done my best to make her think it's an exciting thing and she's turning into a woman etc.
I'm devastated on the inside. She seems so very young. I was 13 when mine started and I hated it. I feel sad that she's not even made it to 11 and she's got this annoying burden already.
Here's the thing, I use a moon cup and have done so for 13 years. I can't bear the feeling of sweaty, crunchy pads. Luckily I had found a few jumbo night sized ones In my drawer for her to use today. I'll be out tomorrow to get her some smaller ones, but can someone please recommend the latest in period comfort? I am not Squeamish so don't mind handling blood. I want her to be comfortable so what is best for a young girl to use nowadays?
When she's a bit older I'll get her a menstrual cup too, but for the next while what would be best for her?
Thanks

And always do cotton in fragrances pads btw

CorianderBee · 03/02/2021 10:45

Unfragraced*

Mine like the bodyform pink ones with wings. They aren't scented.

Glad to see you have bought some period pants. It might be worth getting some reusable pads too. They are so much more comfortable and absorbent than disposables and give her an extra option.

There are loads on Etsy in different sizes and designs including characters and flowers/butterflies/unicorns etc.

I wonder if dd3 would like period pants. I'll have to ask her. They might be good for horse riding? I always thought they sounded a bit ick but they seem very popular!

Passthecake30 · 04/02/2021 21:33

I have a very private 11yr old dd (who knows it all apparently Hmm) who will want to do every single thing for herself. Can I ask, those with daughters wearing the period pants, do your daughters rinse them themselves?

Frodont · 04/02/2021 22:00

Dd emphatically did NOT want period pants!

24butfeeling80 · 04/02/2021 22:03

Is shes sore a good old fashion hot water bottle used to work the best for me(still awful pains but more soothing awful pains lol) periods are horrendous the poor thing Sad

My mum always recommended except using to help with the pain; I never listened as it was the last thing on my mind... but it is sooooo true. Going for a walk really does help.

My poor little only just 10 yr old dd started last week too. She’s managed fine with Lillets teen pads and I’m ordering period pants for next month. What is the sizing like on them? Dd is very slim, below average weight but has curvy hips and a tiny waist. I’m clueless as to what size to get her.

I’ve been preparing dd for her period for a while as she’s got fairly big boobs for a tiny girl and she’s had some spectacular emotional outbursts recently, I think once your dd gets her head round it op she’ll be totally fine in no time, especially with the pants. Periods for our daughters are going to be so much easier than they were for us messing about with massive crispy sanitary pads and leaky tampons etc Sad

bluebluezoo · 04/02/2021 22:27

Just buy a ton of everything you can find. Pads, tampons, period pants. Different brands, styles, types.

Let her experiment and find out what she prefers.

For the pp and period pants- get a nappy bucket. She chucks them in, you or she put them in the washing machine on a cold rinse. Then a normal wash with bio detergent.

Passthecake30 · 04/02/2021 22:42

Thanks blue. We used to use washable nappies so sounds pretty much the same. My dd is very much a follower so it’ll depend what other girls do too I guess.

Christmasfairy2020 · 07/02/2021 16:16

My dd is 11 and measured her yesterday for a bra and she was 32b and has hair and smells etc. I've since reading this ordered from period pants Confused for when the time comes

Dollygirl2008 · 08/02/2021 21:31

Hi my daughter started when she was just ten. I didn't let the school know because she asked me not to, but I would in your position if they still have bag regulations when they go back. Try calpol meltlets for any period pain but she might be lucky!

Also, another vote for period pants - particularly Modibodi. They are LIFE CHANGING!!!! They technically don't need any other form of protection but my daughter had the boy pant style and still wore a pad for extra protection. It also meant that if she didn't have the opportunity to change, it didn't matter (she didn't want any friends to know). Honestly / they're expensive but I'd pay double if I had to - they are that great! I also recommend the swimming bottoms

Good luck! She'll be fine. My DD is 12 now and an old hand at it!!!!

DustyVenetian · 08/02/2021 21:38

Those of you with girls who started early- were they along the road of development before hand?

Can it happen before any development?

I've read it can't but want to make sure I provide the right info.

Dollygirl2008 · 09/02/2021 08:20

Yes my DD had started getting boobs and hops but no actual signs of periods. I knew they wouldn't be long but it still took me by surprise. All ok though - with period pants and swimwear, she's just got on with it

dippyegg32 · 15/02/2021 19:44

My daughter had her first period last month age 10. Second has started today so it's been a 32 day cycle. I've bought modibodi but not sure whether she needs a pad with them?

snappybitch · 01/03/2021 10:01

Morning! Just thought I'd add a little update in case anyone is now finding themselves navigating all the new sanpro products out there now. I did go ahead and order the modibodi pants for my daughter. We are halfway through her second period now and she is coping much better this time around. She's wearing the boy short style at nighttime and the briefs during the day. She says they are keeping her dry for the most part, but the clots do sit on top. I showed her how to wipe them off so she can pull the pants back up if they are not very damp.
I bought little canisters for the bathroom. (Like a kitchen compost caddy) one with clean pants and one for the soiled ones.
This was her request, she doesn't want her 17 yr old bro to know. Yes I know it's not a dirty little secret, but this was her request and I respect her wishes. She was fine with her dad knowing.

So far I'm pleased with them, she is too. I feel these will be adequate for a school day and she shouldn't need to fuss with pads on her own at school.
Thankfully she will have had a couple cycles before she gets back to school so will get the hang of it all soon.

Thanks again for all the advice, it was truly helpful xx

Thanks for sharing. My daughter is almost 12 and am convinced it could be anytime now. I use the washable pads from bloom and nora and have bought her a kit in preparation. Good to read that the pants have gone down well. Will bear this in mind.
