I gritted my teeth when dd's nursery did 'jungle week' and made lions and giraffes (grr - lions and giraffes live ON THE SAVANNAH, not in the jungle).

But now she has come home with a lovely, gluey, sparkley feathered head dress because letter of the week is i, and "i is for indian".

I have decided that I like the nursery because it is a safe and gentle place for her. I am a far bigger influence on her life than they are. I don't love it but I can live with it.

What would other mners think?

IheartNY · 01/05/2009 17:54

FAQinglovely · 01/05/2009 17:55

DisasterArea · 01/05/2009 17:56

hmm. I is for Indigenous?

BonsoirAnna · 01/05/2009 17:56

Maybe they will do "N" for "Native American" next week

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 01/05/2009 17:56

don't you mean 'N' is for Native American .

DisasterArea · 01/05/2009 17:56

N for Native peoples

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 01/05/2009 17:56

crossed post Bonsoir

DisasterArea · 01/05/2009 17:56

A for aborigional?

TaurielTest · 01/05/2009 17:57

Send a note back saying N is for Native American / F is for First Nation ... I dare you!

MrsMerryHenry · 01/05/2009 17:58

Perhaps you could explain the Native American/ Indian misnomer to your DD?

On a lighter note, my DS (age 2) decided at nursery that 'P is for Pub!'

FAQinglovely · 01/05/2009 17:59

you know Indian Tigers, Indian Jungle - I'd be p*ssed off about the Giraffes thing, kind of understand the Lions thing (known as king of the Jungle - even though they don't live there) - but I really REALLY can't get worked up about I is for Indian when it's Jungle week.......

edam · 01/05/2009 17:59

I've known a couple of people from Sioux and Hopi backgrounds who actually preferred Red Indian to Native American. Still couldn't bring myself to use the term, though, just feels so loaded..

DuffyFluckling · 01/05/2009 17:59

but 'i' is for 'indian', is it not?

Just coult yourself lucky that you don't have a DS who's obsesssed with Tintin comics and Peter Pan, he thinks they're called 'Redskins'

ramonaquimby · 01/05/2009 18:22

I is certainly for Indian but that term really isn't used anymore and for that reason I'd be a bit as well. It's like Eskimos - called Innuit now.

DuffyFluckling · 01/05/2009 18:23

Yes. I is for Indian. And Indians live in India and do not, as far as I am aware, wear feathered head-dresses.

Eskimos are mistakenly called Inuit as Inuit are just one tribe of people commonly found in Canada, in Alaska and Siberia the main (Eskimo) tribe is the Yupik and in Greenland the main tribe is the Kalaallit.
The native people of Western Alaska prefer to be called Eskimo.

"Eskimo" remains the only word that describes all the physically and culturally quite homogenous groups that extend from the Siberian side of the Bering Strait to Greenland. The American Heritage Dictionary sums up, "While use of these terms ('Inuit' and 'Yup'ik') is often preferable when speaking of the appropriate linguistic group, none of them can be used of the Eskimoan peoples as a whole; the only inclusive term remains Eskimo."

jabberwocky · 01/05/2009 18:50

That happened at ds1's preschool. I have to say I was a bit but decided to let it go.

ramonaquimby · 01/05/2009 19:06

ahh well thanks mrz.

being cdn I refer to the Cdn innuit and therefore not those in Alaska who go by 'Eskimo' . So when I'm talking or referring to Innuit, it's those in Canada not the US or elsewhere

btw

TartanTeddy · 01/05/2009 19:12

You seriously need to get out more. Wish I had so little to worry about in my life. Or is this someone having a laugh......

mrz · 01/05/2009 19:24

ramonaquimby you are very welcome

It just goes to show that when people assume PC terms they can sometimes upset those they are trying to please...
