School nursery uniform too big

RichTeaCheddars · 12/06/2023 13:40

My daughter is just turned 3, she will be starting school nursery in September.
They have a uniform - joggers, polo shirt and a jumper that has a logo.

Joggers and polo are fine as can get from multiple places. But the jumper is the logo's item and the smallest they do is age 2. She's quite small and wears 12-18 month clothes. Can wear some 18-24 months but they are large. By September she won't have grown into age 2-3 clothes.

I'll check with the school what their policy is but has anyone else had this with the required logo item being too big?

She would be dwarfed in it currently!

Can you buy the logo as a badge and sew it on to a jumper, or there's probably a place somewhere near that embroidery it on for a few quid.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/06/2023 13:48

Buy the age 2 and tumble dry it a few times to shrink it?

RichTeaCheddars · 12/06/2023 13:53

@Legaldrama I don't think there is a badge option which is a shame! But I hadn't considered an embroidery place

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz 😂😂 this has crossed my mind. There is a 2nd hand uniform sale soon so I could test it out on one of those. I'd have to go to a launderette though as my washer dryer is completely incapable of getting hot enough to shrink anything !

There is no uniform policy for any state pre school it's optional.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/06/2023 13:59

Just wear a jumper of the right colour. Mine spend the first term in pale blue polo's rather than blue as I could get them a lot smaller (the blue was technically the boys uniform as well as the smallest dress was nearly to her ankles). School was more interested in her joining in everything.

RichTeaCheddars · 12/06/2023 14:01

It didn't read as optional, it's the same uniform as for reception. We have a welcome meeting soon so I'll ask then. As I could just get a jumper in the same colour from a supermarket/m&s in the right size.

I don't really mind her having a uniform as it's a pretty comfy one at this age. Just as she's so small it's difficult.

Yes, I think I'll have to do that if the logo one is definitely too big. I hope they take the same approach as your school did.

Is it a local shop or online place? They usually do logos on demand so if local you could maybe ask really nicely for them to embroider on something in the correct size/colour, I'd expect to pay the same as for an actual jumper though, is not really their fault.

HAF1119 · 12/06/2023 14:12

We had this.. I got the 3-4 for my teeny just turned 3 year old and it's actually quite small on him now thanks to the tumble dryer! He was normally in 18-24 and the rest of the stuff we got 18-24.

He's now 4 and still in 2-3 in everything but the jumper, I'd maybe give it a go and see

RichTeaCheddars · 12/06/2023 14:12

It's local (as well as an online option). So that's a good idea to ask the shop, thanks.

I'll check at the welcome meeting if I definitely have to send her in a logo jumper or if a plain one will do. If I have to then I'll get a 2nd hand one just to check. It might already have shrunk 😂.

Failing that I'll ask if the shop special order one or embroider one that I provide.

Thanks all. Small thing but good to get a plan sorted or I'd be last week in summer hols and panicking!

She's exceptionally small, so they'll either have to make size 12-18month uniform available or make an exception. What else can you do?

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 12/06/2023 14:14

Ask at the shop where school ask you to buy them from. Just because they don't advertise they can do the embroidery on smaller sizes doesn't mean they can't.

I loved preschool uniform - ours was a dark coloured jumper and dark coloured polo - it didn't matter if it got covered in paint and playdough and glitter as all of them did.

School most likely won't really care though - although most people put their children in the jumpers some don't and no-one cares.

gogohmm · 12/06/2023 14:15

I had this with my dd, the aged 3-4 size drowned her in reception, couldn't find plain black leather shoes either in size 4 then. I bought woollen cardigans instead and she had pink hearts on her shoes (they moaned but did understand)

Legally it's optional.

Check whether the logo is "compulsory", at ours it's a logo polo and a logo jumper / Cardigan but it isn't obligatory at any age.

It's nursery, none compulsory education. If they're going to make life difficult over your being too small for a school jumper, you're gonna have much bigger issues in years to come

Wenfy · 19/07/2023 20:40

Just send her in with the too large jumper on day 1 and let them tell you to stop.

RichTeaCheddars · 19/07/2023 21:06

Haha it's really quite large. But I did get a couple from the 2nd had sale that are well washed and shrunk 😂 fits quite well.
Still trying to get jogging bottoms that fit, I have ordered some from Next and need to go collect them.
Shoes are tricky - black school shoes or all black trainers start at about size 8 or 9 mostly. She's only a 5.5 currently. There are a couple m&s though so I'll wait a few more weeks.

It's not easy but it's not as dire as my first panicky message made out!

I assume this is a private school as you say the logo is compulsory. The uniform manufacturer will have to provide one in the right size for you.

RichTeaCheddars · 19/07/2023 21:15

No, not private. All primary schools in my wider area have a logo jumper.

Went to the uniform shop and enquired, can't make one / get one in a smaller size. Same with the skirt and pinafore if I chose to get one.

I also picked up a skirt in the 2nd hand sale and I'm going to try to adjust it. Sew in some elastic with button holes and pull it in like that.

Needmorelego · 19/07/2023 21:19

Mine was a teeny tiny thing when she started nursery class too. She wore pinafore dresses - they were so long she looked like a Victorian school child 😂

RichTeaCheddars · 19/07/2023 21:27

😂😂
I loved wearing a pinafore at primary school.

I'd love to get one for my DD as it'll help keep the white polo clean haha but I'm worried that if it's long then she'll have trouble going to the loo. Same with the skirt I got. I suppose she'll soon learn :-/

PigeonPigPie · 19/07/2023 21:29

If there is second hand uniform available you can probably find one that's already been washed loads and shrunk a bit!

RichTeaCheddars · 19/07/2023 21:31

I got the jumpers that way but they don't have any small enough skirts or pinafores. The smallest in them is 3-4 and they aren really the shrinking material. The jumpers though - prime shrinking material 👌

This made me laugh, I remember my nan buying me massive school jumpers and I was really upset because they drowned me, she just said 'trust me, I know your mother' and sure enough they fitted me after the first wash 😆
