Does your preschool/playgroup serve a snack to the children? What do they have?

Just curious as I've been asked to make suggestions after mumbling that I didn't think the snack was that great at our playgroup!
It's all right, but too many crisps/cracker type thingies.

DD always had fruit (apple, banana, pear or satsuma) or veg (tomatoes on the vine or carrots) and milk. so very good, but the bananas were always green!

Generally speaking there is one type of carbohydrate - pitta bread, naan bread, crackers, crumpets - plus a variety of fresh fruit, sometimes raisins, and occasionally cheese. Every now and then they have a hot snack like savoury rice, or special themed food if there is a festival or different culture they are thinking about

purpleturtle · 15/11/2006 19:56

Ds claims to have either breadsticks or apple whenever I ask him. I'm sure there is more variety than that, but not according to him!

DD1 says she has fruit and a biscuit but lately they are having toast with jam, marmite or chocolate spread on!
She's only there half day and has had toast and rice crispies for breakfast at home before pre-school!

Clkoice of drinks (always water) plusfresh fuit juice or milk.
Rotating snacks, always choice of three - raisins, crackers, toast w marmite, celery/cucmber sticks, breadsticks, apple/orange/banana segments. Not inspiring, but pretty easy to do!

geogteach · 15/11/2006 20:03

At ours every child brings a piece of fruit / veg or raisins each session. These are prepared by the parent helper and each table gets a plate with a variety of fruit and veg on which they share. They get milk or water to drink.

Well when he started there, I was told it would be fruit/carrot/cheese, and water or milk. But he occasionally comes out with telltale smears of pizza or cake all over his chops, or a biscuit clutched in his sweaty little mitt. I don't mind much though - he loves it there and they are brilliant wih him, that's the main thing.

Nemo1977 · 15/11/2006 20:13

Ds playgroup have toast, fruit, cheese, and a biscuit. They also have a choice of drink between juice, water and milk.

littlerach · 15/11/2006 20:16

we offerfruit, usually 2 kinds, then a cracker or plain biscuit.

MrsApron · 15/11/2006 20:17

bizarrely home made tomato and garlic soup and bread one day last week. My small cried tw of her most hated things in one go.

MerlinsBeard · 15/11/2006 20:18

at preschhol (and playschool b4 that) thwey had fruit or veg. playschool chopped it up but preschool gove it as it is and teach them to wash it themeselves.....tomates/carrot/apples/pears......

At toddler groups i go to they have a biscuit and we bring their own drinks. At one of the groups another mum will occasionally bring some fruit.

MerlinsBeard · 15/11/2006 20:19

neko is that all at once? that would count as a meal for DS1!

lemonaid · 15/11/2006 20:19

DS's nursery do fresh fruit for a morning snack and rice cakes/bread sticks in the afternoon.

Sugarfree · 15/11/2006 20:30

Chopped apple and a choice of milk or water.
That's changed since ds2(now 7) was there, because he used to get squash and a biscuit.
Now they only crack open the (plain) biscuits on birthdays.

Mala · 15/11/2006 20:55

Milk/juice and a biscuit. Wish they offered some fruit instead.

Overrun · 15/11/2006 20:58

Fruit and milk. I'm sure that they can have water instead. Occasionally they have a biscuit or toast. In fact ds1 has asked me to speak to the teacher and ask if he can have biscuits every day lol

MadDogShitWoman · 15/11/2006 21:00

dd1's old preschool give them toast or fruit ,juice or milk.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 15/11/2006 21:05

Nice name

pesha · 15/11/2006 21:19

Ds's playschool offer water or milk to drink, no juice or squash anymore as bad for teeth or summat. And snack used to be bit of fruit or veg, ocassionally a biscuit or cake on a birthday but just recently have been having beans on toast and today apparently it was a bowl of rice crispies! He had 2 bowls of cereal before he went!!

MadDogShitWoman · 15/11/2006 21:22

Cheers Greeny ,i thought it was appropriate following my tantrum over dog shit.

skerriesmum · 15/11/2006 21:26

I bring the snack for our playgroup! Everyone pays 50p/person and that covers two kinds of fruit, cheese, and crackers. I made muffins once but I think they were too healthy, the kids wouldn't eat them... so it's back to basic stuff.
