Apparently we were close to experiencing power blackouts last night so tonight could be a repeat

Time to charge up your laptops, battery packs etc and make sure you know where the candles and torches are..

I'm about to cook dinner now in readiness- just in case!

Download the NESO app which are the people who are responsible for moving leccy around it will show you exactly where the power is coming from !

And it would show that NESO issued a margin notice yesterday which was the purpose of the thread..

Just to say that I'm a 'vulnerable customer' so the energy and water suppliers contact me ahead of any potential outages or adverse weather conditions.

I've not heard anything from anyone, so, assume my area must be okay.

I do have torches in every room, though. Even in my coat pocket and bag! The street lights where I live are few and far between and are very dim.

user8762456 · 09/01/2025 20:38

Actually that app doesn’t have that level of detail. It’s quite interesting in showing how different areas have a different mix of energy but otherwise Gridwatch is better in showing real time pressures on the grid.

Well you can infer a lot from the mix ie how much wind is powering vs imports

BobBobBobbing · 09/01/2025 22:40

I signed up for the NESO warnings years ago. Always useful for a reminder that things could go wrong, but actually they are also reassuring when you see the alert come out and then get retracted shortly afterwards. The whole point of them is to help balance the load and avoid issues so they are actually a sign the safety protocols are working to keep the lights on.

And dont wait til there's warnings to charge your stuff up and get prepped- you are more likely to experience issues completely out of the blue so set up systems to check your chargers once a week/month. A substation fire/car crashing into a pole holding your electric/tree branch taking out your lines are all more likely than the country being unable to generate/import enough electric and you'd get no notice of that. (Been there, got all those t-shirts.) I'd even rate cyber terrorism a more likely possibility.

NotVeryFunny · 09/01/2025 23:18

Could this be why I got a "electricity is unstable" warning from my washing machine twice earlier this evening? Bit weird and never happened before but no sign of power going out or lights flickering or anything.

I’m not saying it isn’t interesting just that it doesn’t have any historical data and isn’t as detailed as gridwatch

God some people are just determined to be difficult. I never says we were going to have a blackout. I flagged to fellow prepper boarders that there was a near miss the night before so it was worth being prepared just in case.

if you don’t want to charge stuff up then that’s completely up to you but no need to be arsey

You really aren't giving up are you op?! Just check your sources a little more carefully in future. At least make sure the websites you post look a bit more convincing.
It's really irresponsible to post rumours/propaganda without fact checking first as you could really scare already vulnerable people.

I’m not sure why there is such hostility? I just googled and there were articles from the usual mainstream media. It was very easy to check.

here’s one: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/blackout-uk-cold-snap-will-there-be-b2676571.html

heres another: https://news.sky.com/story/amp/power-grid-operator-scrambles-to-avert-blackout-threat-13285474

The thread is on the preppers board, where people like to discuss preparing for such possibilities. No need to go and mock the posters. People don’t go to the style and beauty boards and take the mickey out of the posters there (for example).

Will Britain suffer a power outage? UK ‘within a whisker’ of blackout

NESO told consumers it was safe to continue to use electricity as normal after operations

For goodness sake. There are literally articles on the bbc about the current concerns and a statement from the government about gas availability.

Some people are determined not to take any precautions about anything.

Exactly I mean those websites are probably set up by someone sitting in their underpants in their mums spare room

Anyone can set a website up and claim authority about something.

Yes those bloody BBC execs. Trying to trick us with their long standing journalistic and broadcasting credentials. Sneaker fuckers

I think shows a complete lack of how the media works.

'mainsteam' or realible news sites or media sites dont really exist any more. They take their 'news' from any old scaremongery or irrelevant source to make headlines, get people reading and clicking. Thats all it is. I oculd set up a website claiming Im a source of knowledge put a few legit looking sources on it, say something outrageous, it would soon make its way onto 'serious' news sources and suddenly be a 'thing'

When its actually not

Someone actually posted about their partner who works in the industry which seems a bit more reliable

No wonder people panic if they cant disseminate where information comes from

Geez someone doesn’t understand electricity supply. We have system warnings to avoid blackouts, they aren’t just something to joke about.

But hey, please continue to tell us your expertise in the energy market.

grumpypedestrian · 10/01/2025 20:49

That person’s partner was an ESO, they move supply and don’t turn on power stations. My partner is also an electricity supply expert and regularly talks to journalists. There was definitely a system warning between 5-7pm on the day in question.

justasking111 · 10/01/2025 20:55

The Welsh government I think sent out a pamphlet in the autumn telling us what to do in the case of power cuts. Two years running we've had one of those through the letter box.

I really want to start a thread about a zombie apocalypse and the possible prep for that, just to see what you say.

OctogenarianDecathlete · 10/01/2025 22:29

I know, @soupfiend, which is why I described them as “mainstream” and not “reliable”, but it is the best we’ve got, really.

An anonymous poster on a forum claiming they have a partner that works somewhere is also not reliable.

Either way, I’m good. Battery & panels saving me money every day and there to power my house should blackouts materialise. You do you. Hide the candles. Whatever makes you happy!

Er… I think most people realise by now that the BBC are not a neutral source of “news” nor reliable or trustworthy. Unless you’re a drag queen, in which case fill your (size twelve, white diamanté) boots.

Sorry preppers, as you were. You can thank our useless Energy Minister for the crazy energy “policy” and subsequent power cuts.

I think you need to hide the preppers board if it’s making you so cross. Some of us like to discuss these things and resent being told not to.

Thanks again op for the thread 👍🏻

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 11/01/2025 09:04

Thanks OP. My DMIL had a power cut earlier in the week. Guess this explains it.
