Apparently we were close to experiencing power blackouts last night so tonight could be a repeat

Time to charge up your laptops, battery packs etc and make sure you know where the candles and torches are..

I'm about to cook dinner now in readiness- just in case!

Britain ‘came within whisker of blackouts’ after plunge in wind speed

We probably should invest in nuclear and have several new stations up and running before we banned new gas.

Take it as seriously as you like, no skin off my nose. This is the preppers topic by the way so we do tend to make sure we are prepared for things just in case...

Why are you posting links to articles written by people who can’t even spell correctly?! It's propaganda for people like you to lap up and them to laugh their socks off at!

Get a hobby or something

DH works for national grid and monitors usage and distributes demand around the grid to make sure places with higher demand are covered. His specific job is specially to ensure people have power.

Just asked him about this, he said newspaper reports just scare-mongering. He said supply is plenty today, there will not be any issues tonight at all.

Just reposting this to make sure everybody sees it. Stop falling for fake News, people!!

grumpypedestrian · 09/01/2025 16:36

There was a system warning, there wasn’t loads of newspaper articles about this. Maybe don’t ridicule something you know nothing about?

Dude, this is the peppers board. You don't need to come here.

grumpypedestrian · 09/01/2025 16:42

An ESO distributing supply isn’t going to turn on a power station when supply is predicted to be low.

System warnings are useful to help flag when there could be issues to stop blackout’s happening, it’s not something to laugh about and mock people about.

kate592 · 09/01/2025 16:50

What I don't understand is if we get close to a blackout in very cold weather now, how are we going to cope with a country full of electric cars being charged over night in the future? I appreciate not everyone will charge every night, but still.

Yes, I got home last night to find DH sitting in the dark and cold working off his laptop battery!

My dh charged the car!

It’s things like this, the continued increase in the cost of electricity, the increase in EVs (no hate, I’d love one) that helped us decide to get solar + battery.

We had an amber weather warning yesterday, and so the battery charged itself up automatically just in case. Today it’s been bright sunshine, so even after cooking this evening the battery is at 80%+. So blackout? Schmackout! We can run the house on the battery for a few days if we’re careful (but hopefully the sun will shine tomorrow and it’ll top up again).

The system is the best thing we’ve ever done. I was nervous because we had to take a big loan to do it, but the saving in electricity cost covers most of the loan payment as it is (even in December). As electricity prices rise, the savings will increase. I’d definitely recommend it.

VegTrug · 09/01/2025 19:07

@gamerchick I'll post wherever I like thanks! Also I'm not a dude....

Im envious. We should have built in off grid capacity but it cost many thousands of pounds. The only option we were given was the ability to run a couple of sockets but even then we would only be able to run a few things because the battery is limited in its output rate. Even that would have costs thousands.

Even so, I do love our battery. Even more so now that we have an EV and so can fully charge the battery every night at EV rate (7p)

It’s just a Tesla powerwall but it did cost a lot. But it’s what gives us a benefit in the winter when the sun doesn’t fully charge it. It’ll charge off the overnight low tariff so we can use it during peak time. It made the long term savings even higher.

This bugs me as well. They go on about the grid aging, roll out smart meters so they can ease pressure if they need too. Have plans for planned power cuts if needed and still pushing electric cars. It doesn't make sense.

ah Yes sorry ours does this too but we can’t use it in a power cut. I wish we could.

Generally as a country we have much lower usage at night. That would be the case even with more evs charging. The pressing issue is that the more evs there are charging at night the less likely they will keep the low night rates for EVs. So then people will charge in the day and then the model breaks. We need far more solar facilities and more power stations unfortunately

Tonight is actually ok since on the whole there is a decent level of wind providing us with power. Tomorrow is potentially due to be different.

Thanks for the heads up OP, always useful to have a reminder to be prepared, tend to get complacent. We’ve had a few very short power cuts in the south east, 15 minutes or so which seem a bit unusual.

Whyherewego · 09/01/2025 20:20

Download the NESO app which are the people who are responsible for moving leccy around it will show you exactly where the power is coming from !

PullTheBricksDown · 09/01/2025 20:23

Yes, thanks for the advice. Charging my phone now and glad I have many fluffy blankets.
