What are you prepping? Do you think it's likely everything will escalate now?

OP posts:
Petrine · 06/11/2024 08:23

No, quite the opposite.

NoCarbsForMe · 06/11/2024 12:53

Not a prepper.
But it might not be a bad idea OP

No, expecting a return to normal

Nellieinthebarn · 06/11/2024 15:17

I'm not prepping any more than normal.

User364837 · 06/11/2024 15:18

I heard a credible person on radio 4 saying that he thought Trump winning will be positive news for Ukraine

TheNoonBell · 07/11/2024 13:18

I had been prepping for it under Biden but now Trump is in I am feeling a lot safer. Will still keep the preps though as Labour are in so I am expecting some issues (probably lots of power cuts thanks to Milliband). The only nuclear scenario extra thing I had in was about a two month supply of Potassium Iodide tablets.

The floods in Spain have destroyed a lot of fruit and vegetable farms that would normally be exporting to UK. So we should be expecting prices to go up and possible shortages of fresh fruit and veg this winter.

We might have to go back to just having the traditional British veg of my youth, spuds, swede, carrots, parsnips and cabbage. Which can all be delicious of course, especially now we don't just boil them to death like my Nan did!

chumpt · 07/11/2024 22:04

Hope it would calm down.

Monday55 · 07/11/2024 22:25

Why do you think Putin waited for Biden to be in Power before invading Ukraine. He was scared of how unhinged Trump is.

Iran are definitely unhappy as Trump assassinated one of their army generals when he was president back then. So he won't hesitate to assassinate anyone else he deems a terrorist. That's why Netanyahu didn't help Harris with her campaign because Israel needs someone who doesn't hesitate or wonder what they said in their last sentence.

boiled parsnips and roast parsnips are so different !

Hate boiled, love roast.

BurntBroccoli · 08/11/2024 00:53

No I think the situation with our farmers potentially striking is more likely to lead to shortages than Trump winning.

I agree, but Nan didn't get that memo! TBH its a wonder she didn't put me off veg for life. I also didn't like fried eggs until I had one at someone else's house and it didn't have black crispy bits on the bottom. But this was the generation that survived rationing, so I think the taste of food was somewhat secondary to actually having some.

Yes, I was already prepping but will prep especially so now that Trump will be coming in. He is more likely to throw other countries under a bus under an America First policy that plans to deliver Americans much more of a bargain in any deal. And also, the tariffs that he plans to enact starting off with the countries he has already identified but likely to spread across the world will probably affect the prices and availability of goods, making them more expensive for everyone.

Plus, countries slapped with tariffs are going to get pissed off with America and not want to kowtow to Trump’s demands out of national pride. I am in Australia and a few years ago, we got the tariff treatment from China as a way of forcing us to do what they wanted, which did not work. Trump seems to be planning to use tariffs in a similar way.

WinterCrow · 05/12/2024 03:52

I’ve been learning to be a prepper since 2016, practising rotating, marking up dates, not wasting anything, acquiring bargains, cooking leftovers ‘creatively’, etc.

I enjoy it, so with the situation in the UK, and France, and Ukraine/Russia and the Middle East, and Trump’s looming tariffs and more Brexit fall-outs to come, why not carry on prepping? I might try and refresh & improve my attempts.

WinterCrow · 05/12/2024 03:55

Just to add: it was bloody useful during lockdown in March 2020 and beyond. I was able to help out a neighbour as well with some things she needed, without needing to even go to a shop.

2022 was Russia's second invasion of Ukraine. 2014 is when it really started, and Trump was nowhere near the Whitehouse at that point.

Putin is in no way concerned about Trump, quite the opposite, and only because Trump knows Putin can destroy his personal credibility in an instant. Congratulations US, you have a Russian puppet in the Whitehouse for the second time in 5 years 😂

Realistically, once you have the basics of prepping down, does the "event" really matter? Ok, yes it could if your sitting ground zero, and no I don't think Nuclear is a likely outcome of Ukraine (Middle east or India vs Pakistani, not so sure).

Unless your on the front line, the biggest threat to all of us is a reduction in services or shortage of goods. No vegetables from Spain, can you sources local grown? Power cuts / rolling blackout what must you power and what is just a luxury? Massive waiting time on medical services, can you cover the basics at home?

Beansandcheesearegood · 17/02/2025 21:41

I came on here to see about ideas for prepping for spreading wars in EU due to Ukraine war.

BiddyPop · 18/02/2025 12:07

Generally, I am in the "thinking" phase - what are my routes away from trouble if needed? What are the issues most likely to happen where I am because of escalation? How do I overcome those?

And the actual prepping part - I have never actually put together a bug out bag, despite lots of thinking of what I ought to include. Contents are different now for various reasons but I need to put together a reasonable, and reasonably invisible, bag - as I am in a European city that is not front line but higher chance of things happening than "back home".

So I am planning my alternative routes home, or to other safe places. I am planning what I'd need to do if staying locally here (which I may need to for work reasons). I am gathering copies of important paperwork, spare meds and some emergency supplies/clothes to put in a bag, and a plan to shop for the bag this or next weekend.

I have my electric bike all set and charged. I know the main train routes I'd likely use if flights weren't an option (including links to ferries "home"). I should have a car in the next few weeks which would help enormously in that context.

But I am also prepping for inflation and scarcity coming. Savings, building non-perishables that I use anyway, having alternatives for light and extra blankets (heating is a communal gas boiler for my block, and I am not allowed naked flames so I have a lot of blankets (and hot water bottles which I can fill if I still have electricity). And food that doesn't need cooking in case the electric goes. (I have a 1 ring gas camping stove - but no naked flames allowed. I also have lots of tea lights and baking trays - which I am more likely to get away with as it's more fear of explosions they have the rules for...and I have a fire blanket ordered).

And I plan to get my balcony garden going again once spring starts - to have some guaranteed supply of greens and veg. Which I like to do anyway, not for prepping but relaxing and healthy food reasons - but will be making sure I do this year, just in case.

I'm working on replenishing my stock of maps. Cyber attack or a concerted attack on the internet/mobile phone infrastructure is most likely (as we've seen in parts of Ukraine), and phone signal is bad enough every time I go anywhere anyway. I'm embarrassed at how dependent on Google Maps I've become over the years, and I think I need to flex my map-reading muscles a bit. It might only ever be needed for our summer holiday to somewhere out of the way which is fine by me.

I'm also working on a mobile first aid bag. I've bought a bum bag and now I need to do a stocktake of plasters. Again, it might just be used for cut knees and skinned fingers but simultaneously it might be bloody useful if something bigger happens.

I bought a couple of medical guidebooks last year, one for remote first aid e.g. in mountains as we spend a lot of time in such places on holidays, and one that was prepper-specific. I have added a herbal book to this set although I'm a bit dubious about the use of it, if there's full TEOTWAWKI it might be something to have around the place. I'm investing in paper books for reference in general atm as a cyber attack will mean not being able to look things up on the Internet.

It's all dual purpose, but I like things with multiple uses.

The other thing I'm researching a lot lately is what to do in sustained loss of power as attacks on the power grid have been seen a lot in Ukraine. I don't have a fully robust set yet, just a power station. It's just such a huge investment and we never seem to have the cash to allocate to it. My next major purchase on that front is a decent solar panel to recharge the power station. I've had one sitting in my Amazon basket for months now! 🤣 Beyond that, I want to do a full assessment on what we will need if we lose gas/electricity.

BiddyPop · 01/03/2025 14:17

Funnily enough, DH is suddenly open to a power generator/large battery in the past month.

And after last night, he is suddenly a lot more pessimistic - he plans a conversation when dd is home from the continent (to not scare her doing it by phone) in 2 weeks about knowing her routes to me (in another city in the continent), and both she and I having BOBs ready.

I've literally just bought a car (but still need plates and insurance) the plan would be that the 2 of us go together or dd gets here and takes the car to keep heading for "home". I may need to stay for work reasons. But I would be evacuated if need be, and I am fairly self sufficient (as is Dd in fairness, but she would find it easier with a car - as I have ready money to pay whatever is needed, she's still a student and I can fill the tank before she leaves so she'd get to a ferry).

This hasn’t aged well…🥴

I’ve just ordered a board game & pack of cards-3 teens without mobile/tv will get bored quickly, so even if we’re doing it by torch & candlelight it would be something to keep us entertained.

Walkingwithdinosaurs · 03/03/2025 22:16

I am beginning to g to think of reprepping. My stocks ran out just after Covid as we used it all & I never really restocked my supplies.

much more worried about nuclear missiles this time though.
