I grew cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets for years - great way to do it! (I just can't hang them in my rented apartment now). Also, if you are stuck for space, thing about growing along fences (things like peas or beans that you can train up netting), or on windowsills in pots (salads, spinach, spring onions, radishes all great) or in larger pots on patios (peppers, climbing tomatoes, courgettes, chilli's, leeks, peas and beans up canes...). Dwarf varieties are great for pots and can do really well if fed properly.
I now only have a balcony, but use windowboxes and canes for peas and beans, large pots for tomatoes and courgettes, smaller pots in a stand for herbs, and other window boxes for salad things.
If growing in pots, it's a huge help to put a good handful of water retaining gel or crystals in the compost when planting up initially, as that really helps in hot days. You'd still need to water daily pretty much as they are thirsty plants, but it helps them not go into shock if really good weather comes and they would dry out in the course of the day.
